thanks Reb, its not a total loss all the hatchs open plus ya can pull the turret off so you can see some of it pritty good.
i thought of using the clear turret but that just screws up the paint work LOL.

Hi fellas, it's been a while since I last visited so it's a bit time to catch up with ya. Great models here and great progress...bummer that I can't see the Photobucket pictures at the moment since Photobucket is working on their site apparantly
Anyway, I did some bits on my African Tiger too:
The Tamiya Feifel cleaners aren't bad, but I cut some hoses too short, so I'll have to replace them with Voyager ones...
that's it so far, hope you guys like the 'bling'
Cheers

Well, I is finished..
Dragon's 1/35 Battle Of The Bulge Tiger II with Fruilmodel Tracks.
Not many problems with the build, the main one being Dragon's photo instructions that they have now gone away from. I was slack a few times and didn't spot a part that had been added without specifically pointing it out.
The other problem was that the weight of the aluminium barrel supplied with the kit (thanks Dragon as I hate the seams in some plastic barrels) caused the gun to droop to its lowest position each time. I got around it by glueing some styofoam to the top of the inside of the turret which the gun's breach rests on in the neutral position. Tamiya's idea with the poly caps is a better idea.
This is my first ambush scheme and all the reference photos I looked at showed that only the dark areas of camo had the dots, not both as suggested by Dragon. And I did not want to dirty it up too much as I liked the look like it is. All I did was put a subtle wash over the top to tone things down and a matt coat to finish it as the Gunze Red Brown I used (H47) came out pretty glossy.
I also read, and agree with, that the camo was applied by brush and so had a hard edge to it, so I did it with a small brush and tried to give the impression of it being done with a 3 or 4 inch brush. You can't see it in the photos but there are brush marks in places and some spots that are nice and thin.
Fruil tracks went together nicely and always look great on a model.

Hi Warren, your Tiger ausf B looks spot on mate. Really love the camojob you have done. In my opinion the turretnumber is a bit harsh, you could that solve with a bit of fading. But on the otherhand, that's personal taste. You made a stunner for sur mate
Just one thing about the camo: it wasn't applied by brush actually (except for the dots). The hard edge camo was a factory applied camo and they used airbrushes and templates for it to obtain the hard edge...
Cheers

Thanks for the praise Wouter.
The numbers don't look that harsh to the naked eye. I thought the same thing when I saw the photos. It seems it is all in the camera or skill of the operator (more like it)
As for how the camouflage was applied I suppose we will never know but the camo is definitely hard edged from the photos I have seen.Would be great if we had a way of seeing into the past and have a look at what the real colours of many vehicles were in the past as photographic evidence i black and white is just a little too vague for my liking.
But I think doing camo schemes the way you want to is part of the fun of making a model, as long it is backed up by some sort of evidence.
I find I am looking at doing more and more difficult camo schemes as I get older..

Thanks Greg. I found that brush painting it was far more tedious than if you use paper masks for it like the ones I did an article on. But all Dragon gave you was one side view and a front and a back view for one of the three marking schemes.. and all had different patterns to the camo scheme.
This difference in all the ones I have seen tha participated in the Battle Of The Bulge would also tend to collaborate the theory that the camo for these tanks was applied by brush in the field.
Give the scheme a try sometime Greg. It is not as hard as it looks. I used a bamboo skewer with the sharp tip trimmed off to apply the dots. Nice and simple.

The first model I did about one year ago was Tiger 213 which is now on display at La Gleize, Belgium. I did the hard edge camo using the blu tacky method and I must agree that these camo schemes are fun to do
Anyway, I also did some progress on my Afrika Tiger I
Cheers

Thanks for the kind words Jose. I will keep my eyes open for the photos. I have at least one more King Tiger that may get painted in the camo scheme of that one.. It may be a little more difficult though as it has Zimmerit on it.

@Graham Looking good graham
Good luck with weathering etc.
@Wouter
Holy cow!
Where do get that patience from?
I'm been .... screwing around with PE too (haven't used it very much)
but I screw it up so often (luckily repairable).
Good work ^^
Happy hunting ..... err.... painting.
And it has been quiet indeed.
Sorry for my absence, but I am busy so much with school stuff.
Work for Physics, Maths, German, Geography, and for chemics I have to make a work-thing about Polychlorinated Biphenyl
So, pretty busy

Hi Folks,
Have just become a late recruit to this campaign.
Some remarkable builds so far.
I shall be attempting a Tamiya 1/25 scale Tiger.
The wife has told me that the box is too big and needs removing, so my only option is to build.
Have made some progress so far as the Bank holiday on friday gave me plenty of undisturbed time as the TV was on most of the day watching a wedding!
Cheers
Keith
