Worked on the AVRE some more. Scratchbuilt the exhaust extensions last night and so far that has been the toughest part of the whole project. I originally tried bending one piece of tubing per side but that was not working because I could not get them to match. I eventually decided to do each pipe as two pieces joined at the elbow and that worked on the first attempt, luckily. The tank has been Futured so decals and copious weathering are to follow.

Regards, Ian

Ian, Great job on the AVRE. The wading stacks look great!

Everyone else, great job too! :-)

I've been on holiday to Andalucia for the last three weeks, so no modelling here. I hope to get started again in the coming weeks.

Keep up the good work guys!

Very impressive stacks Ian! What was the diameter of the tubing you used?

Nathan, it was some spare Evergreen tubing I had . I just measured the exhausts and they are just over 3 mm in diameter. I tried some other plastic rod first but it looked over scale so I went with these. About a perfect match for the exhaust ports on the engine deck.

Hey, folks! Sorry I'm a little late to the forum, if not to the campaign - I've been bogged down in WWI and Vietnam (hmm...).

I'll be doing a D-Day landing dio centered on Lindberg's 1:32 (or so) Higgins boat and as many figures as I can find room for. I'll be using figures from Airfix's US Infantry, two sets of Tamiya's European theater infantry, a Master Box D-Day set, a Tamiya US Army Infantry, a Tamiya US Army assault infantry, Verlinden's marine casualties, and maybe build a couple from parts and pieces from Tamiya's US gun and mortar team. Slow going, but I'm sure there will be plenty of time...right?

Hey Hal, welcome on board!

Will be a very fascinating dio! Looking forward to it!

And yes, there's plenty of time. :-)

Did some work on "Cheetah". The model was decaled after a FUTURE application. Following that, I applied a faint Burnt Umber/Mineral Spirits "bath" to the tank. Heavier pin washes were then added using mineral spirits washes and FUTURE washes. I will flat coat this weekend and add airbrush filters and MIG Pigments----THE FUN PART!!!!!!

Hal----welcome to the fray. Looking forward to seeing that one. Hope you have a big shelf.!!!!!

Best wishes everybody!!!!!

Ian

Well the Churchill Mk IV AVRE, "Cheetah", is done and posted in the gallery. This was a very well-designed kit on the part of the folks at AFV Club. The tank was finally weathered with MIG Pigments and CMK Pigments and I used alot of grey toned powders to get the effect of the Normandy Beach Sand. Also, some resin stowage was added to the AVRE as well. I wanted the tank to look kind of "tired" to reflect the days of hard fighting following the landings at Sword Beach so the vehicle was weathered fairly heavily. Thanks again to Nathan for coming up with the research material pertaining to the exhaust extensions on the rear deck of the vehicle. I would have completely missed that during the build if he had not told me about them. I would also like to respectfully dedicate this build to all those soldiers, sailors and airmen who participated in the beach landings and airborne assault on 06.06.1944.

Best wishes, Ian

Holy Cow Ian,that looks terrific! Weathering and paint are top-notch and man those exhausts look sweet.

Glad I could help. Sprue Brothers is sell David Doyle's Churchill books cheap, so I picked up volume one last weekend. Lots of great photo of Churchill's, but no AVREs, guess they are in volume 2. I'll definitely be building more Churchills in the future, like you said great kits.

Looking forward to your next build.

Thanks for the compliment, Sal and Dave. I had never done a beach-sand weathering job with pigments before so this was kind of different. Once again, a privilege to build with this group and be in this campaign.

Hey, another late add. I was thinking of doing a Sherman DD or Crab (even if they're more obvious choices), not sure yet but considering we've got a year I think I've got more than a bit of time to decide. I'll do my best to have something posted by the end of September!

Steph, the Centaur looks cool. What are the markings on the turret for though?

Ok, main reason for posting was for this http://www.d-daytanks.org.uk/

Found the site while starting my research, thought it could possibly help some of us out in some minuscule way(or at least be an interesting, if not short read). They've just got small amounts of information about some of the divistions involved, including Panzer Lehr and the 503th Battalion. Some decent photos to go along with the tiny bits of information; though more than a few are just stills from films I've seen of Hobart's Funnies.

hello, the tank would fire their guns while off shore in their landing craft; they would then land and continue their work from the beach . to assist in fire support, white degree markings were placed on the turret .the marking could be read by binocular equipped spotters, this helped align the turrets even if smoke obscured the direct line of sight to target (according to the text on the installation instructions tamiya).

Hey guys

I plan on building a diorama of either a flak 88 or a flakvierling. Would this be acceptable? I'm not sure if it counts as armor.

If its acceptable I'll go ahead, if not I'm up for building a Sherman.

Cheers

Ah, thank you Steph. I could only figure as much considering the size of the gun. It does seem most helpful if your rounds hit their targets!

Anirudh Arun, that would be interesting if it's OK-ed by Dave. There would have been plenty of them along the coast... though a scene from the late-night para-drops from the 5th would be cool if it qualified. Then again, I might do that myself later .
