Hi Gary
I`d like to switch over to the M1128 if possible.
I wound up with quite a bit of AM on the M1126 and I doubt I could finish it in time.
The M1128 will be OOB with the exception of the wheels
Thanks

Sure, you can switch. Just try to resist the call of the After Market on this one!

@Clayton - That vehicle is coming together nicely, does the kit include ammo boxes or artillery/mortar shells to put in the cargo area?

AFV: IJN I-58

I spent this week working on painting the water base and building up the submarine itself to the point of primer. I painted the base with cheap acrylic paints, glued some rocks I found outside into the foam. For painting I layered the paints the same way we would on our AFVs. First pre shade with dark, then lighter and lighter blues. The rocks are many layers of dry brushing of greys and grey browns. After this I added the greens and waves/wake/foam. I used old pictures of American subs underway to figure out the wake and the following picture from somewhere near Japan for the water and rock colors.

Here are some WIP of the base:

I put some time into the submarine, it isn't the best ship model ive ever worked on and because of the wood deck the order of construction is very strange. I had to scatchbuild the frame covering the upper hull ruder and stopped myself there. From what I see in the other posts on this campaign, AFVs expertise is in building AFVs and maybe less in these ships.

All the pieces were primed tonight so next week will be painting and continued ship construction. I think the water will happen at the very end.

Thanks for looking,
Bryan

Finally got restarted on the 251/20. I'm going nearly OOB with a relaxed paint job that I have plans to make into a diorama later, as I have a set of Dragon night fightin' dudes.

A piece vanished so I had to cobble together a replacement; added some other tidbits. Overall, I still not as convinced by this AFV kit after having just built a Dragon. Definitely some different design strategies going on.

I did a rudimentary paintjob on the interior even though most of it can't be seen once I button it up.

Time to post some progress pics of the M36 tank destroyer.

Am very impressed with AFV Club's bogies - fully articulated

you can see the articulation in this photo...

So I guess it would look rather good on bumpy terrain.

And here’s a pic of the correct engine deck for the M36 - the one in the kit is for an M10 I believe.

This M36 will be an ex-Yugoslav one, captured and used by the Croatian army in the 1991-1995 war in Croatia so I’ve had to scratch the Yugoslav-style head-light guards. I think they turned out all right…

I’m now labouring over seemingly endless Friul tracks as the Yugoslav variant of this tank destroyer had the T54E1 type tracks - not the type supplied in the box

cheers

Matthew

I'm impressed by these AFV kits and the work being done on them. They look great without paint, i mean articulated bogies and more, very cool. Cant wait to see them with some color.

@Matthew, do you have a picture of an ex-Yugoslav M36? Good scratch building around those headlights.
@Ron, that M1128 is really great, did you tint the periscopes?

AFV: IJN I-58
Spent the week prepping, priming, pre shading, and putting on the base coat. I also completed the conning tower. The wood decking was stained with green grey to darken it. The railings were heart wrenching as usual.

Base Coating:

Completed Conning Tower:

Next step: Same treatment to the hull of the submarine

Bryan

Thanks guys
The coating on the optics is a liquid mask although I have used the AFV coating which has been applied underneath.
I am really impressed with everyone`s work and look forward to seeing the progress being made.

@ Bryan, Thanks. Here are a couple of pictures of the M36 Yugoslav headlight boxes:

I am impressed with your sub, and the dio. I just don't know how you can work in that scale. Those handrails must be miniscule...

Cheers

Progress from me? I worked on cutting those supports from the suspension arms and managed to slip with the knife and nick myself. I was pressing too hard. I knew I should have changed my knife blade. *sigh* I probably should have just left them on. No one is going to see them - but I'll know they are there.

Picked up an FV101 Scorpion on e-bay a few weeks ago--really should get around to posting a starting pick. Need to get cracking on it, but have to wrap up at least one more in-progress build before I get another set of pieces battling for space on the bench.

Clayton,

Your M548 is looking good. Are the one piece tracks those provided in the kit? They are same as included in the YPR-765 I am building for this campaign (see my entry below). I built AFVs M730A1 Chaparral which uses same chassis as your 548. However, the Chaparral kit came with single link track which I didn't really want to use. I tried a set of AFV one piece tracks as you have mounted and came out with same results you have so far. You can't get the track sag as required by the M113-based suspension. I thought about using pins to force the sag but was afraid that either the sprocket/idler would shift or that the track would stretch.

You can hide the sag issue behind the swim skirts if you use them.

All,

I have been remiss in getting started on building my YPR-765! Between a 10-week battle with an on-off sinus infection, fall-season yard work and contractors building out the second floor of the house, I haven't felt like it. Model building is like exercising. Once you start you go all out, but once you have to stop it can be hard to restart.

I got started with a vengeance yesterday as rain set in and the contractors are at point the don't require much input from me.

I have built out to point I can put down paint that won't be hindered by remainder of parts. The hull is missing the flotation cells that mount on the sides. Have to wait until suspension is mounted before they can be installed.
There were some minor fit issues that required some filler. Also, this kit has sprue attachments that would make an early eastern European kit proud!
This kit has the same gap at the bottom of the rear ramp that all M-113-based kits have. The kit manufacturers do not account for the thick rubber gasket that surrounds the rear ramp opening. The gasket accounts for only a small portion of the gap. Being an OTB build I have no plans to deal with it.
