Bovington Tank Museum a virtual tour

The Trench

Upon entering Bovington Tank Museum the Trench is the first area available to enter. It guides you "taking the Kings Shilling" signing up, where it shows (courtesy of a sound track) just how easy it was to sign up when underage and how desperate the situation was to get people on the front line. It really brings home to the viewer how the idea of King and Country was pushed to get your name on the paper. You then enter an area that greeted new and old alike as they got off of troop trains near the front, the dead, dying, and injured lying at the sides intermingled with supplies of food and ammunition.

You now get very close to the front with damaged buildings and rutted streets. Various signs warn you not to drink the water along with some of the sights and sounds, and if you take the time to dwell on it is a very oppressive scene. Now you enter the trench proper which along with the sights of war at this time, various sound tracks give you a taste of the sound of war (I do think some of the soundtracks should be a lot louder so that you get the real feel of an artillery barrage incoming) I do think it is a good effort though.

Finally exiting this area passed a WW1 tank about to plunge into a German trench, and the fear it caused when first experienced into an area of the museum storing a number of WW1 AFVs.
