Fantastic as always! I really like to watch your actions with resin. Several trials I've made ended without any sign of succes so I admire your work even more.

Excellent, now I can see where you want to drive us.
But I have a question : the colors are the real ones? I mean, your blue shade is fantastic, but I don't understand why there's a brownish yellow area. Is this a pre light effect on the water shades?

A great job as always, just a question, obviously the boat is shown smashed and not looking its best shall we say, will you show it with the flak padding that protected the forward bridge compartment ?

JBA,

It may be too late, but if you are adding "light" to the water, what about "shadow"?

I drool everytime I look at your latest updates!

Oh just when I thought you guys began to loose interest! I'm quite happy about all these comments guys!

-Thanks John, yep it begins to look like the completed thing -almost, honestly things decide themselves at the last minute as usual

-Thanks Kenneth friend -and as usual I stay posted for your own stuff

-Andrzej really about those tries?.. sounds weird to me, as the basics are just to make a waterproof surface and mixing thoroughly the components. I always sort of try doing something new with the water indeed. reverberating skies are my next steps.
You know why there is always water in my dios? You can't put a real background to a dio which leads what you do to end up being full of dull and depressing colours. Using water allows me to create some sort of coloured (backg)round, the idea place for the rest to shine through. Like some sort of painting with a watery background of sorts.

Alex you can't see much sky from where you live -though I like the church by the water.. As you know the sky is my roof from where I live, so this brownish tint was also observed near the blue and yellow one..
Lyon..

Chalon..

so many places, so many skies, so many colours in the sky really.

Very good question Alec! Indeed right since the start I didn't want to model those Flak "jackets" as I wanted to show a pure round hull and it seems the early war models didn't wear any.
I guess they came when the losses increased. I found that picture of a boat without the Flask padding

But yes that's a choice.. maybe a bit guided by pure laziness

thanks Jeff of course, when it's light, it must be dark also.. I use the fact this resin dries every so slowly to do that 1 or 2 days later after the resin began to dry in the pot: You can apply with a knife and then it levels itself.

Now the poor soul. I thought the neat blue Royal Uniform somewhat didn't suited to the guy I wanted to put in the diorama. And indeed looking at some Osprey it seems they used to dress a bit at random (well "a bit" only!) Well anyway I used a guy in battledress. I used bits of an old Dragon British set with very soft details.

The head, didn't want to sculpt one as it will be mostly hidden. So i took one out of those Hornet Nazi sets and wiped out the stupid haircut to put a more British one (like Alex)

well, in the end this is a British of sorts! the hands will be Hornet's too..

On the yesterdays images I can recognize a sunken boat in the sea.
It´s a puzzle what you build, comparing to the other images shown on page 5.
But after all updates, I can see a light, comparing with the other images.

For me, another great build showing an unusual part of our life.

GREAT!

greetings...

Interesting use of an old Dragon figure ! The pictures of your hometown looks good too . Were these taken during early morning/evening or mid-day as the sky certainly looks pretty gloomy. Cheers !
Kenneth .

BTW, my pictures are up. Do let me know what you think. Thanks !

Thanks a lot Soeren! that's really appreciated. Really i wonder if I didn't go too far in the mystery or "un-explanations" with this SBS. I think i had lessn time than usual to really explain what i was about, oh well..

Thanks Kenneth. yep both pictures were taken with a mobile phone early on the morning. No really interesting pics except maybe for the sky!

Ah, now the cold. i was surprised to see that you can perfectly model with numb fingers, unless of course you end up *dropping* the diorama on the floor -wrong side of course
I would have written it off but fortunately I recovered the projector. The small triangular mast is lost though.
So well, I know what i will do those next 2 days, the front hull if not going to be very easy to repair

what a shame !! but never mind i have done many simmilar tricks and still managed to recover it ( can it not be explained away by battle damage ??? )

i remember onceat a tale told me by my father about two battle ships in alexandria harbour during ww2 ( he was an R.N. able seaman !! ) it was recounted because of old salts telling war stories in the 1970's
my father met his friend to be by recounting how his ship during action shot the top mast off one of thier own ships , his friend to be replied " yes i know it was my ship you lot shot the mast off !!"

Yikes, we all have a story of a big accident well into a build. Never a good feeling watching (in slow motion) as your project goes airborn.

This one looks totally fixable. It's worth the extra day or so to do.

Great work JB, sorry to hear about your accident! I've had similar myself, but I have every faith that you can repair it no problem!

By the way if you are considering other figures have you seen the new Wee Friends Sailor model? It's a nice sculpt and would be perfect for a project like this.

JBA, this happens sooner or later in every hobby room.
Unfortunately it was your turn to face this horror this time.
I hope you will repair it and make it look the same as before, don't run away in a 'battle damage' explanation, that's not your style I think.
I dropped three finished models on a display early this year and they took me an entire day to repair it, you are not alone in misery my friend.

Keep up the stunning work, we modellers never give up !

I’m so sorry to see that wrong-side-down accident happened to you…
I know that the basics are just to make a waterproof surface and mixing thoroughly the components but during my tries 1) waterproof surface was not 100% waterproof (resin found some small hole I’ve missed and managed to run away from diorama ) fortunately diorama stand on the cup (it was very small) and I did not make mess on entire floor; 2) I’ve made borders of thin plastic sheets and it melted due to resin’s heat; 3) paint I used to color the resin reacted strangely with and the water turned out in nice lingerie pink (don’t ask me how and why, I don’t understand it… ). Next try is coming soon so I will send you some pictures as soon as I have it done.

Thanks for your nice words guys!
Paul yes, in the need that will be more "hard weathering" than battle damage, but there's sure one place where i took the best of the accident -nice story! But that's precisely the reason why there is this metal circling around the turret -so that they don't shoot their own masts and turrets et al.

thanks Nico!

thanks Scott, you know that's just this diorama should have been finished the first week of January, and that it lingers because of this never ending winter and accidents like this one (not the first one, I had a light bulb crashing on the boat too !)
Well, in the end a slight demotivation creeps in, but I'm harder than this.

Thanks Jon. No I didn't see those sailors you write about, I will check, but i'm either too stupid or too proud to even consider buying a fig ever again

Thanks Bob, realistic battle damage uh? The problem is that there is 3 mm thickness of mastic at that precise spot, a bit thick for the real thing!

Well Guy, I won't say I feel happy that i'm not the only one to which such a thing happened, but i certainly feel supported (still waiting for new stuff from you btw)

Andrzej what a string of weird things happening to you!
first: the framing is being made of *wood* NOT platsic. use Plasticine for kids to cover every joint
I still have some stuff running but less like so till I was really cautious with that. As for paint, use oils, the transparent ones available in art shops are a must.. will wait for your new tries then!

So I basically had some extra sanding to do, tamiya mastic applying, sanding again?. What worries me is the photoetch frame of the windows which suffered quite a lot and will stay somewhat bent no matter how hard I try.
Here I am doing the windscreen again. it's transparent evergreen + a CA glue coated framing.

Hey JBA !
Keep at it, my friend; I believe that you are tougher than that for a single accident to deter you from completing the project (and you yourself has said so ) ! As for myself, I've taken your advice to heart and have modified the vignette accordingly. I've sculpted a new cat for the vignette and hopefully will be able to post new pictures soon . Cheers !

Heres the Royal Navy Sailor:

Theres a review here on Armorama. Looks like a nice sculpt, I'd love to do some Navy stuff myself but have never gotten round to it. Nice haircut Her Majesty would approve!

hey Claude, maybe you could have learn me a few German words as well in those cases.. well it's almost fixed now, but long boring time..

Thanks Kenneth, I wait to see more of your own vignette then

oooOh Jon this fig looks really nice, I somehow couldn't find real accurate reference for a regular British seaman other than the blue uniform, but yours look like he could have walk the bridge of a MTB!
Thanks for sharing

btw, a friend sent me that link : a real British MTB that actually floats!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8505497.stm

speaking of figures, I have been painting mine and sort of fixed it in the hull with a pin. he shall be more inside the boat when I arrange a bit more the whole.
Anyway we are closing to completion of the diorama now, just those drying times of resins and gels which explains why I can't basically post every day..

Thanks for viewing

looking good jba !!

the video link is good a few years ago about 4 i was out delivering in a truck for an engineering company

when i was sent to a company that used to deal in armed forces salvage sales selling everything from a sewing kit to ex army vehicles

when i pulled into the yard i was quizical about the huge area of tarpaulin covered scaffolding all along one side of the building

now me being a long time fan of these boats i was astounded when he said

" it's a ww2 M.T.B. .... go and have a look around it if you want .... don't be shy look where you want to !! "

even though i was still at work " screw them this was just too good to miss ! "

spent a good hour looking everywhere unfortunately there were very few of the original fittings left , but to be fair the owner was having a full no exspense spared restoration but to a luxury canal cruiser with the aim of using it on the french canals
( it should be in your country by now jba )

the guy who was working on it was second to none and the finnish he was working to was stunning but most of the time it was just one guy working on it but hell did he graft as it was moving along fast

but i went on decks , bridge , looked in fuel tanks , engine rooms etc etc a fascinating hour spent

only sad i didn't have my camera !!

WOW, JBA, I really LIKE what I see here now !!!!! I can just imagine the poor "guy" saying: "Help me, I'm sinking !" I can't wait for the completion shots, my friend . As for my revised vignette, I'll try to post the new images this Saturday. Look for it under the same link: "One Aim, Two Goals". Cheers !

JBA,
Quietly following this thread from the start! Typical JBA stuff...innovative techniques, mind boggling results and a keen sense of artistic placement and lighting.
I really can't wait to see this painted and finished. Perhaps a shed heater?

Seriously, keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to all of us in many ways
Cheers to you and yours and please let us know as soon as the new arrival shows up.

Charles
