Hey great story Paul! Thanks for sharing!
I can't remind anything of the same -except my mom using her charm when i was a little kid for us to be able to see some reserves of the British museum in London!
I shall have a look on French canals -though the people who have the money for such a work probably live more in the south than I do

Hi Kenneth friend, I don't really know what he says to be honest I'm waiting for more to come from your vignette!

dear Charles, you come right at the end. So well here I am and I will just be posting in a few mn
the completed pics of the diorama.
So mind boggling? nope, bogged down more like, I got SO many problems with this diorama. Like resin leakings,, resin not wanting to dry, paint turning a funny way, dropping the diorama, dust that went through each layer of resin -i even realized just vbefore taking the picture 1 hour ago that I had lost the sort of bars that protect the light on the hul!
Honestly I want to forget it pretty fast as the result is just okay to be honest, it's less good than the 2 latest ones, and i sure learned that i shall not work on some products with temperatures minus 0..
That's the only delivery I mention right now

Thanks to everybody, checking and commenting, I need a bit of rest after that one

Wow, what a build! If I had the same finished product, I wouldn't be disappointed: I'd be thrilled beyond belief! If only I had the same skills...

Great work!

BRAVO, JBA, BRAVO !!!!!!!!!! Please, let me be the first to congratulate you on a job well done and to thank you for an extremely inspiring blog . Not as good as the previous 2 projects ? Honestly, I believe that you're being too hard on yourself . After what you have gone through making this vignette, I think that you deserve a pat on the back for sheer determination and perservarance ! If I was in your shoes, I would have "thrown in the towel" a long time ago . Get a good rest, my friend, and I look forward to your next masterpiece on Armorama. Cheers !
Kenneth .

(Update pictures on my vignette will be posted tomorrow, I promise . Do let me know what you think then.)

Cheers JB
It looks like a cold and miserable way to die....stuck in the turret.
When I first looked at the photos I wasn't sure if this dio affected me as much as the last several you have blogged. However, continued scrutiny of the photos definitely creates a chilling effect....particularly when you reflect on the sole figure and his situation.
Cold, lonely North Sea. No hope.

High Jean-Benard. It came out very well despite you unscrupless attemp to deny us a finished peice by one of our favorite artist. . I must admit that when I saw you dropped it, I had terrible flashbacks of a dio not too long ago that I droped. Took out the whole left side of my plaster carved building. Lucky as I get every once in awhile, I was able to glue her back together. Andrzej had helped a lot with the translation and info for the cobble stones and I thought I was about there when the evil gods of modeling fate interupted. I have not had the heart to drag it out again and finish it. They say time heals wounds. Wonder if that applies to modling ones. My thanks for another well done peice and maybe some insperation to pick it up again and finish it my friend.

Hello JBA, I am glad to see you were able to recover from your mishap and complete this project. I was wondering about the title, and now I get it. I am amazed with how you come up with an idea, visualize it, and then bring it to life. I find it inspiring to watch you work, or should I say create. As always, I am looking forward to your next work of art. Al

thanks Gelson -hey long time no see your own dioramas!

Thanks Zaltar, looking at what happens here in forums, the one that actually manage to finish their dioramas are not very long before doing some truly good stuff in no time! perseverance is the key.

Thanks Kenneth friend! You are right on one thing, I must take a bit of rest
Well not being very happy about my work is the risk as I always try and take the risk of doing something new for me so.. sometimes it's real good, sometimes it's just so so like this one

That's really very nice what you say Charles. I never wanted that one to be as intense ats the previous one, the diorama is ver conform to the idea I had right since the start, there is just 2 or 3 things technically speaking that I am absolutely not happy about, oh well, wait for the next one

thanks Carlos, appreciated!

Funny story and way of telling it Bob friend, what doesn't destroy you makes you tougher it is said, and I suppose, it has to be the same with dioramas! really here the bit I am not happy about is the way the "blue sky reflects in the water" that was the idea you see, and while the yellow grey/ red is okay, the blue parts suck. Oh well, I ain't finished with this idea

Thank you Al, really most of my ideas I find while listening to music, or half sleeping in the train when I have to work at 200 kms from home like it happens to me often. Oh well, the next one will be better!

Salut Jean Bernard,

You can make at least one chapter in your upcoming book about all the things not going as planned. LOL

Looking at your dio i think, due to the missing waves and visible sea, that there is something missing.
I know you planned it like that, but it looks a bit to much flat.
Couldn't it be done (your light effects) by modeling a big regular wave like this one?

I have another question (perhaps a bit late and also perhaps already answered)

What is the man doing in the cupola? Wouldn't he be on top of the structure at this point of the action?

A la prochaine aventure avec JBA -Dioramas!!

Salut
Claude

Hi Claude !
If I'm not wrong, I think the poor sailor is trapped in the cupola and will suffer a horrible watery end ! Please correct me if I am wrong, JBA .

Although you say you're not completely satisfied I think you should be. You tried something new and experimented, you went out of your comfort zone.
There are a lot of us out there who stick to what we know but in the end the progress we make is slower if we were experimenting more.
Congratulations for marvelous project and see you at the next one.

hi j.b.a. first off i love your figure work and scratch built air sea rescue launch
( top marks

the idea is superb too you'd think he could get to the front hatch but blind panic seems to have set in !!

however this time the water didn't work for me personaly , it looks a little flat and lifeless compared to your previous works !!

i'm presuming you were trying to capture when oil gets into the sea when it calms the sea

also i think the weather may have played a large part too !!

looking forwards to your next superb build now the weather is improving !!

Thanks as usual for your support Martyn!

Upcoming book uh Claude ? You should give some useful suggestions here
that's still not in the plans to be honest
Well the light effects I wanted to create was just the sky reflecting in the water, it can only be done if the water is very calm. So this was the plan yes.
the big wave I already did in Galilée and I don't really like doing twice the same thing.
I shall have a further look in my painting books and I will return with something better
As for the guy in the cupola, you know my guys in dioramas usually don't *need* to have a reason to do what they do or to be where they are, they just *are* there.

Kenneth friend you are sort of right here!
Except that I have the idea with the sailor being there and honestly didn't think what was before and what was after

Thanks for this Primož. I don't know what is "comfort zone" in diorama making. I am bound to fail from time to time and there is no problem about that. I always have more sympathy for the one who fails while trying than to the one that stick to the same old thing. Oh well, yet I need to take some rest now..

Well Paul thanks, that was not even oil leaking -and actually the effect is not that bad when you see the diorama in 3D, you see there are really different depths to colours of this diorama, but yep the idea was to do the sky reflecting ion the sea, so yes I needed a calm sea. But like I said i will come back to this idea with yet another project until I succeed!

JB- amazing diorama, as always. You’ve pushed loneliness that was always present on your dioramas another few meters further… On The Womb there was a lonely death and here you made us deal with lonely dying… I don’t even want to think how scarred that guy is right now.
Beautiful!

Hi JBA,

I probably won't say anything that has not been said before but I'll post a reply anyway. Your SBS are fascinating to follow. I don't watch TV at all, I only use it to play DVDs and such, but I have to admit your threads and build blogs are as close to watching a TV as I can get. I am amazed at your skill and technique including your forsight and attention to detail. I can only wish that I have even 1/8th of your skill.

I have not built a diorama in decades. It's pretty intimidating to try to build some viewing all the artworks presented here. But, even if I want to, life takes precendence. It's people like you that make me want to achieve more.

Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing your work to us. It is truly very impressive!

Looking forward to the continuing of Seddul-bahr and/or your next build.

stunning as Usual, hopefully you will send me a full set of pictures and article on the build. it has just a morbid sense of loss, helped by the mono toned colours you have used

cheers

Dear JBA
An excellent diorama, the tones on the boat, sea and the desperate crewman lend a sense of despair and isolation to the scene.....very well done, look forward to more.

Glad to see you pushed through and got this one done. The techniques are up to your high quality and wonderful use of light and focus.

I like seeing it in your gallery on your website - it shows the use of light better than scrolling down a list.
Either way - nice project.

JBA,

Are you missing the lense in the searchlight, or at least the shards of one?

What about some loose debris in the water? Or did you feel it would be distracting from the focus of the turret?

I do VERY much like this piece! It's a great follow-on to"The Womb".

You really need to do something from a H.P. Lovecraft story, or even Poe!

thank you Jerry! I will too try and foloow your sculpting work

thanks Andrzej, I don't really know why but I wanted to do a guy who's sort of detached from the sinking, there is no visible emotion about his features.

hey Joseph, I must say i don't own any TV either -that's the reason why I am able to model so much ah!
Anyway, that's truly nice what you say.. I've always tell the same thing and I will tell it again, first come the idea, the whole spirit of the build, the way it is planned etc, and THEN comes the actual technical possibilities.
Here I sometimes appreciate more some badly painted soldiers over some sheet of wood than dioramas done by stars because there is sometimes more soul and spirit in those badly done but greatly planned works.
so yes try and achieve more, the whole trick is to stay your eyes fixed on your aim and not move an inch from it, and being ready to redo stuff again until the outcome is worth what you think it should be -and being ready to spend a few *months* on one single work.

Keith I owe you big way on this one
Your gun looks great in that sea of -well mishaps.
To tell you the truth I won't be writing anything about this one. I want to forget it in a particularly dusty corner of my garden shed. Pictures you will get as I intend to print a few, but you'll get those by post
thanks again, I owe you on that one

Than you Garth! yep you'll see more, I ain't finished with dioramas just yet (30 years to go if i'm lucky..)

Thank you Scott, on my own site -the pictures are smaller which is stupid I have to correct this, but what's good is the very big sized pictures from the link bottom right, here the defects really jump to the eye!

Jeff thanks and what you say is funny because I realized just before taking the picture that the 3 parts metal sheet holding the lens indeed "disappeared". It probably fell down somewhere.. well I couldn't be bothered to make a new one and took the pics nonetheless.
but well, no for Poe or Lovecraft. All those influences are digested since an long time now, and my imagination is my own, built out of what i am and what i read, watched etc. So i am neither Poe or Lovecraft, i'm just JBA, with my own world and imagination, for what's it's worth.

Thanks as usual Nico!!

Wonderful, truly wonderful. Perfect little dio.
It tells a story, it's wonderfully crafted and painted, nothing too much, no clutter.
The water / colour of the water are incredible. You're a pro.
I already look forward to your next one !
