That's the one! Post war all the wooden load boxes were replaced with steel.

The NO6 is just one fantastic monster. Unfortunately I just don't think the two resin kits available out there in 1/35th do it justice. Also the 1/72nd scale kit is OK but it is, after all, 1/72nd.

Sorry but my bias for the larger scale is showing. It is neither my age nor my eyesight, it is just that I enjoy a depth of detail that you can really sink you teeth into!

Here is the prototype photo I scaled the size and shape of the front bumper off of:



I took this image and printed it at a size where the bumper in the photo came out to the proper width for my Mack. This became my pattern.

The bumper under construction prior to drilling for the mounting bolts. I actually succeeded in gluing thin plastic strips top and bottom to the rear of the bumper so the bumper became a true "C" channel and not just a big block of solid plastic!

Mercedes-Benz Indianapolis 500 Car ca.1914

Semi-scratch built chain hoist. Large pulley wheel is from Dragon Wagon trailer kit. U-shaped gallows beam is bent section of aluminum toilet float rod which was previously serving as my gun cleaning rod.

The chain hoist was employed to lift the heavy gun trails onto the custom Mack hitch.

Army Proving Grounds

My version of the Mack custom hitch and receiver.

The standard tow pintle is shown below and just as on the real thing, may be exchanged for the custom hitch.



Hex rod seeems to work better than round for helping the hitch assembly stay in the receiver which is just a press fit on the model.

In this photo the retaining nut is missing from the custom hitch. Another piece of larger hex rod drilled and cut to form a large castle nut that press fits onto the hex rod.

In this photo Sgt. Joe is holding the standard hitch pintle under his arm while the special Mack hitch is shown installed connected to the gun trails.

When not in use, the standard towing pintle is stored (just as on the real truck) in a false receiver mounted under the load box just behind the cab.

Retainer bolt and castle nut with spot welded on spinner for Mack custom hitch. Sorry for the poor quality of the photograph. It is such a great enlargement I had to draw in the details.





This is my reference source for adding the welded on spinner to the retainer castle nut. The small photo is from the Tech Manual for the M23 Ammo trailer built by Utility Trailer Corp, which also utilized the same custom hitch and was often pulled by the Mack NO.

Now that the suspension is finally at the correct height here is another photo to compare the relatively monster size of the Mack NO with that of the 1/4 ton Bantam Jeep.

Hi, Mike! One of our local Classic Car Museums (Norwich, NY) has a gorgeous 1935 Auburn Boat-Tail Speedster, numerous Franklins, a Cord 812, a couple of Duesenbergs and several 1930s Packards- Their collection of cars runs the gamut from 1890s-1950s cars.

Dennis, last year I went to the Cord-Deusenburg Museum in Auburn, IN. Fantastic!

Maybe I need to post a photo album from the Auburn trip. There were some truly beautiful cars and trucks there plus the original factory showroom.

Nice to have a reference that shows the Mack all loaded up for a change. Also note; those ten guys are gonna have to fit in the back as well, with either 3 or 4 more in the cab!

Challenge: Design a front wheel drive unit that DOES NOT require universal joints or CV joints. You would probably say IMPOSSIBLE. (I know I did!)

Mack did it and did it with style. This is innovation!



F.Y.I. - The latest Kubota 4 wheel drive tractors use this very design to produce a tougher front end without employing U-joints in the design!
