@Sal;
OK - I'm enlisted HERE.
That little Russian rail-bound armored-car has yet to materialize, and I'm now thinking of perhaps doing a steel-wheel Panther G from the Battle of the Bulge... as I have this Tamiya ST-Panther G lit just hanging around, along with some Tamiya link-tracks for same and maybe some scrids and scrads of Pantherish PE from the drawers of bits...
Will that steel-wheel kitty fit in HERE?
Bob

So he did! Thanks for the reminder
Looks like I'll be doing that SteelWheel Panther here!
Should be a pretty quick build, seeing as it's a Tamiya kit with half the parts of the corresponding Dragon ST kitty... So, if I get crackin' on this right away, I might make the deadline!

Careful there, mate! Haste, you know, has all sorts of well-documented potential to make waste!
Panthers, unlike Shermies and Jeeps and T-34 and other such mass-market lot, were individually - crafted and veritable works-of-the-village-tank-builder's ART! You gotta allow time and patience and soak up the rays and let the "steel" feel the love! Being as I'm one a them historically-minded sorts who loves to feel the ambience of the thing in all it's glory...
OK. I'll get crackin' on the kitty!

OK! The Tamiya Panther Type G Steel Wheel is...
Coming to styrene + a little Aber PE Life!
The kit is Tamiya 35174 - that kitty kit with the neat IR night-sight devices and option for either Steel Wheels or standard dished 32-bolt wheels with rubber tires... As this is a STEEL WHEEL campaign... I'll be going with those "Gummigedampfenstahlaufrollen".
It'll NOT be OOTB... I'll be adding on the Tamiya Panther G link track set, and some few bits from the Aber Panther G PE set - grills, maybe the mud-flaps, maybe the exhaust heat-shields. Who knows? MAYBE a few other bits and bobs. I MAY get a metal barrel along the way, and probably will add in a couple "wires" and maybe some duffle and j-cans from the parts bin. I will be more-or-less doing it up as one of Kampfgruppe Peiper's few Steel Wheel kitties at the B of the B, Dec 1944.
They did not have any zimm (whew! ), so I'm home free in that department! I'll be using the kit's wheels - but have learned that Tamiya made them over-sized but that's life. I'll not put the IR stuff on - I doubt Peiper had that stuff on his kitties.
Let the work begin!

Hello Gents,
My entry for the campaign. I have a long weekend ahead so am hoping to get started on this:
Crazy prices over at eBay -- saw one with a US$125 tag. Makes me wonder whether the kit is really sought after.
Cheers,
Tat

Sal ,,, I have a question for you .. i would like to join this campaign but with a slight what if but also a very possible .. a steel wheeled Panther ARV ,,using a Dragon steel wheeled Panther and the Italeri Panther ARV ,, both are brand new and unstarted .
Ive alaways liked the idea of a steel wheeled Panther ARV and thought this would be a good place to build it .
Cheers

Hi Tom,
Just wondering: Has that kit been discontinued and would you happen to know how the Trumpeter Gondolas compare?

@Sal;
OK... detail question here... I'm going to actually kick into that Tamiya Panther G "steel wheel" TONITE at the model club build meeting... I've dawdled around looking up stuff about these rare Panthers in action - appears several actually saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge - at LaGleize, and a few in the Ardenne. I tumbled across the individual tank from KampfGruppe Peiper which appears to call me as the closest historical focus of my dreamed-of effort... But there is a small problem, here!
#223 (I think that is) is the subject I'm thinking of building towards... There's a great US Army pic of this guy parked by a small stream after the battle It shows an odd "special case" of field service that pertains directly to THIS campaign and its theme... apparently this tank lost a STEEL wheel somewhere, and the crew (or a shop) replaced it with a standard 32-bolt rubber-tire type before this tank was lost.... (Which historically and brilliantly settles that long-standing modeler argument about whether or not steel-wheels and rubber-tire wheels were interchangeable on the Panther ). I REALLY would like to do this on my build, following this historic event...
So... CAN I (OK, technically speaking, I CAN ) swap the one rubber outer wheel on in that place, per the historic pic and event, or more correctly, MAY I do this? Pretty Please? IF not, I'll understand and there are some others I could (with a small sigh, of course ) consider doing in its stead...
Cheers!

@Sal;
Did a check - actually the tank in question is Peiper's #225. Here is the pic I am basing my request on:
Note the one replacement outer wheel in the 3rd to rear station.
It's just an ask, Sal - there are certainly others from the "set" I can do, but this could "kill 2 birds" and save me from wanting to do yet another Panther G steelie so as to catch this peculiar event!
Cheers!

Wow Bob that's some request
How does this sound. You can build the Panther just don't post a photo of the side with that rubber rimmed wheel or leave it off until after your galley photo is taken.
Hope that works for ya
