Nice save, Jerry!
Now with some weathering and such you'd never guess the trouble you had.

I remain my own worse critic and have never given myself a glowing review
Well that is both good and bad. Of course you can be critical on yourself but then again every now and then it is simply good to be unashamedly and incredibly proud on your own achievements.
Speaking of which. Be proud on the paint of your 251. You saved it and it looks absolutely good now. Now it is just a matter of weathering to make it look even better. Great job.

Thanks Ron,it did cause me some angst for a day or so. Then I heard about Murrays' serious health issue and I felt very silly.

Yes well, thanks. Now to find the proper balance in the weathering. This vehicle a partly from my imagination as the surviving pics of the 251/11 in LeGlieze are fuzzy and confusing. The pic of one on a train are clear but you can see that it is not the same one that was left in LeGlieze. So I am left with my imagination and I haven't much confidence in that lately.

Don't worry...
Just picture the weathercircumstances the vehicle will be in, use some references and common sence, let your creative brainwaves buzz and GO!

Well,it was cold and misty and foggy. I know that would mean putting a semi gloss finish on the vehicle as they look like that when they are in that kind of weather. I am afraid if I do that there will be a hue and cry about a lousy finish as how many vehicles have we seen painted like that?
The snow had not fallen yet during this time in the battle.

That would mean muddy and wet.
How about keeping the gloss to the top side and upper surfaces of everything and make glossy streaks down the sides?

This could work for a wet and damp effect: http://www.ak-interactive-usa.com/product-ak079.html
I would just practice it on something first, but it really does work to give things a damp/wet look.

Ron,
That sounds like a great idea, hadn't thought of just the top surfaces. I will give it a test.
Conor,
I have seen that product used and it looks good. I am wondering if I can't get the same effect with just using semi-gloss varnish or glaze? I already have those and don't want to wait weeks for the new stuff to get here. No hobby shop in my area carries any of the cool new cutting edge stuff.
Avonel Hobbies in NJ is the closest and that is 3 days hard ride from here.

While waiting for a new order of paint to get here(sprubros never takes long) I built the spool that will go on the front fender.
I wanted an empty spool so I cut the ends off the extra Greymatterfigures one I had and made the tube in the middle over without wire. I etched some detail in the end discs. Then I modified the rack to show the thing in the stowed/mounted configuration. That meant cutting off the bottom of the leather part in the kit piece and adding the folding frame and leather part. To this was added a retaining strap from Alliancemodelworks. Next I made a hand crank from styrene and two gears from an old very cheap watch I broke open.
This new spool and rack was added to a mounting frame that I made from styrene.
I left the chain off the gears as they were not always mounted in this set up plus,I didn't know what to use for one that small. My buddy has a set of PE in the works but it isn't ready yet so.... no chain.

I just happened to have a penny in my pocket when I read this... Just helps to put in perspective how much detail is going into such a small piece. That's pretty epic.

Can anyone direct me to drawings or pictures of the late war travel lock for the front mounted MG on the 251 series? It also had a cloth bag for spent shell casings that went in the center of it?

I would gladly share but 2 things come to mind. I don't know if I have permission and also,I don't know how to set up a link.Yes,I am that pathetic with computors.
Here is my late style travel lock with spent shell casing catcher bag.
I switched the kit MG42 for the Gen2 version as they are light years better. I wish Dragon would release the Gen2 stuff as a seperate kit.

I forgot to point out the frame was made from aluminum printers sheet that I cut into strips. I found plastic was too flimsy for this thin frame. I used resin bolts and the bag was made from thick plastruk tubing which I carved to shape.

Very well done! I keep the foil from family size Stoufer's meals. My biggest problem is getting a sharp bend. Looks like I will have to try the printer's foil.

Painted the fender mounted spool, and the travel lock for the MG. Almost have the MG done. I saw refs that have both the swing arm lock and the late style lock mounted so I went with that but the swing arm still needs the U shaped end part.
I am still plugging along and thanks to all that have been looking in.

Don't forget the cleats to hold down the foliage. The mg looks great! The winch is above and beyond.

Some stuff is still not glued on but here is the number plate. The LSSAH ordered it's troops to paint out the SS and the unit emblems prior to the offensive. Not all complied but this one did.
Added to the rear MG mount detail and the stow bracket and also made the 4 lifting hooks to the crew compartment.
These guys are tired and are taking a break from cutting all of those pine branches. MMMM kommisbrot!! Schmecht gut!
They aren't in the final mix but are just there for size comparison. Happy 4th to all of my fellow Americans and thank you to the French! Vive Lafayette! Vive L'France!
