I made good use of a few hours on this Veterans' Day and did some work on the sub-assemblies.

Decided to try drilling out the coax machine gun barrel before replacing it with brass tubing. I can live with it.

Also drilled out the exhaust pipes. Did Panthers not have the splitter plates in the exhausts that are found on Tigers?

And did a little macro photography on the flash supressor detail.

Keith

Yes, Panthers had the "splitter plates" too - they were designed, I believe, to stop folk of an unfriendly nature shoving foreign object such as hand grenades down the exhaust.

Hi all,
I just joined this campaign and am planning to do a flak panther 5.5 cm from DML. Does anyone have a clue about aiming sights for this particular turret. I know it is paper turret, but I'm willing to scratch some sights and maybe someone knows something about what they planned to use etc. What about a range finder similar to that of the E-50 for example ? I have to say, offering a 'new tooling' for a paper flak panzer without any aiming possibility whatsoever is quite ridiculous... And yes, I had read all the reviews...

Finished the rear hull plate and got it attached

Overall i think it turned out ok. The detail level and accuracy of the dragon PE is not as good as if one where to buy a "real" upgrade set but i can live with it

Having a blast so far, the thank is absolutely massive even in 1/35 and I love it's menacing angles

Great jobs around!

Talking about the exhauts, did the later ones with the curved pipe - flammvernighter any kind of mesh on it to prevent any object go down or just are the empty pipe?

TIA

@Rob, So that's what they were for!--to prevent the ol' 'banana in the tailpipe' trick. Thanks for the history input. I learned my new thing for the day.

Cut some bits of PE 'sprue' and added the exhaust splitter plates:

Also replaced the plastic chain with the 6 part (!) PE chain. I couldn't get them lined up perfectly, but it looks better than the original.

@Johan, I'm not sure what aftermarket PE you are used to using, but what came with my kit is causing me mini-panic attacks every time I look at the myriad of itty-bitty pieces. Yours came out looking really good, and is an inspiration to me.

Johan

Having just finished that same vehicle (albeit with Zimmerit), I can safely say you have done an excellent job on that.

Those brackets are fiddly mongrels, aren't they.

@Keith & Rob: First of, thanks!
Second, I find the pieces just as fiddly as any other set
My comment on accuracy was more regarding how close it comes to my reference pics (If compared to say a Voyager or Griffin set)
All in all I think it's great considering it all came with the kit. So far I've only built "Smart kits" but I think I'll shop around for some more of these Premium ones now!

Good job on those splitter plates, I think I have to steal that one

Hi all,
Here is a set from the start of the campaign. I'm going to buy him from Tamiya zimmerit. besides, I do it straight from the box, unless you happen something unexpected, although the Tamiya kit is doubtful.

Johan

The amount of etch which came with that kit, is, in my experience, unusually high for a DML kit. At least the spare track hangers actually fit the spare track links, which a lot of DML Panther kits do not.

I noticed also that the brass sheet used for the etch was unusually thin (as compared to Griffin et al), or was it my imagination?

And despite various people's comments about "rubber band" tracks, I like them (probably 'cos I'm lazy! ) The required sag in the tracks is quite easy to do by inserting a piece of brass rod into the side of the hull about 2cm back from the drive sprocket so that it holds the track down, then gluing the track to the tops of the centre road wheels.

No, I agree. No problem working with it though, just not the luxurial feel of a Voyager sheet

So many lovely panthers here!

Bit more progress with mine… the running gear is done… and most of the tools are attached...

I notice from the pictures there are some nasty gaps between the zim and the actual tank itself, especially on the nose… I’ll get some filler in there..

Not sure if this is allowed but I’ve ordered some photo etch engine grilles, and brass skirts… More pictures when they arrive in the post and can get them fitted.

Cheers
