Well After going through the dozen or so Sherman reference books i have I decided. I'm going for the Dragon M4A3E8 Kit for Thunderbolt VII but I may not build that version. There is no box, I lost it to Hurricane Irene when my basement flooded.

Oh hell yeah!!!! That tamiya M1 will damn near build its self, it's scary. Great choice to be honest!

Paul, I was an M1 tank commander for a few years. If I can help let me know I have pictures, the TM and some fuzzy recollections of commanding the tank.

Okay here's the rub, do you want a production M1 tank or pre-production series M1? (which is what the kit represents) There are differences especially on the turret blast panels.
Though just a humble M1 gunner, I do have the Verlinden M1 book as well as an ancient series of detailed articles in IPMS Quarterly which probably have the pictures and diagrams you seek. Just gotta dig out them out.

I'm in. At the moment it's going to be the Tamiya Willys jeep but that's subject to change depending on what I need for any of my projects I'm debating

Yep, it's the Willys Jeep. I've got a German replen dio planned with a couple of Stug IV's in a farmyard being rearmed along with infantry collecting ammo and being fed. The jeep will be a point of curiosity for the troops there as it's recently been acquired. I'm just doing the jeep for the campaign though as the dio will take best part of a year...lol. I've had the kit for a couple of years and been itching to build it as it looks to be a nice build but I only build vehicles when I have an idea for a dio if that makes sense

OK Paul now we have to narrow it a bit more. In service early 80s no cammo or bustle rack, or later as Stephen and I served on them in the middle to late 90s. Bustle racks and 3 color Nato cammo? Steve and I served together and we are brothers.

Made a start on the jeep yesterday evening. The thing I love about Tamiya kits is they are so easy to build and they fit together properly unlike Dragon with their vague instructions, too many bits and fit issues. As there's a basic engine in this I've decided to spruce it up so I can have the bonnet open with a German mechanic marvelling at the engine lol. I've found plenty of fantastic under bonnet pics on the net so I can really go to town on it. I've made a distibutor cap and plug leads which I've fitted and a radiator hose but I can't connect that up as that means putting the frame on and there's still loads to do (make a carburretor,assorted pipes, electrics etc) half of which won't be visible but I'll know it's there . Enjoying myself already!

It would have to be early 80's, as I don't have a bustle rack in the kit or my (newbie) spares box! You served with you brother? - that is brilliant!

Karl, for the Green Machine, you have to speak American English and say "hood", not "bonnet". ha ha. Just kidding.
I definitely agree about Tamiya kits. They are a pleasure to build.

I decided to kill two birds with one stone and sorted out all the crap in there and emptied the figure boxes where there was just bits in them (thats how I found the Jerry). Took me bloody ages. Found some more nice pics of the engine today online so have redone the plug leads and added the fuel pump, carb, starter motor, oil top up tube and wired up the battery. It's amazing how little detail there is on the engine. Will post some more pics up tomorrow after I've done a bit more work on it.

Paul, I did some checking on the books I have with early M1 pictures the bilge pump outlet is always in shadow. The TM is not much better but it refreshed my memory that its on the drivers right side just in front of the sponson box. If memory serves the rubber cap is very similar to the one on the M60. Still looking for the blow off panels.
