Again some heavy metal arty... 1:35th scale Mörser Karl with is accompanying railway carriers from Trumpeter. Also the corresponding figures and munitions panzer 4 will be included. Some more things are still brewing in my mind, but I'll see about that later... Something like a couple of waggons, a locomotive (maybe 2) and a Opel Maultier, all in a railyard.

Anyhoo, over to the pictures....

The first carrier is ready to receive it's base color:



In the mean time, the base colorhas been added.
Today I added the first layer of weathering by applying a pin wash of black oils to one of the carriers...


The difference really shows... But lots of work to be done yet...

Oh, and the Mortar has been started too. I am waiting for the Friuls to be delivered so I can finish the lower half. The upper half has also been started...

Current progress on my Karl... Both carriers received their pinwash of black oilpaint... Ready for a lighter mist of either grey or blue grey...

Why??? It looks like a perfect Dunkelgrau as is...

I alway do this on only the upper surfaces in order to create more depth..

Looking great, I really like your tonal variations - do you ever use any dot/patch-colours under the grey coat or is it only washes on top? And do you ever use dry-brushing with a lighter shade to pick out surface detail? I can’t be sure what stage the truck’s at (door handle, wiper, markings?) but its grey finish looks quite monotonous in comparison to the carriers.

The original photo shows the Karls in a 3(?)-colour camo scheme but you went with grau - can’t say I blame you, I’d have gone grey trying to reproduce that if I wasn’t already. I like the sound of the big picture, could it become an extension of your railway station masterpiece?

The pic of the truck was when it was not finished yet. Just the base panzer grey with a mist of lighter grey. No weathering whatsoever.
After weathering the result was like this:

I usually work over the base layer. This gives me a way of better control, specially while air brushing.
I only dry brush with metals to give it that metallic sheen, and the tarp of the truck ofcourse. But I prefer to use pencil or metallic pigments. Next to the dust pigments, etc.
And oils of course...

I will paint the Mortar itself in camouflaged Dark yellow, to give some variation. I haven't found a confirmation that the railway carriers were also repainted in 1943...

Given the field of operations for these arty pieces, I more thought of Warsaw, where it was unloaded at the Warsaw West railway station, on 17th of August 1944. Since this was in close vicinity of it's actual firing positions, it would have driven there on it's own power, instead of being broken down and transported on Cullemeyer trailers.

That is correct. I could not find any confirmation that the long 54cm ones have been in combat.

Reportedly Odin in 041 configuration was used 17-20 March 1945 in the vicinity of Remagen, and Loki was sent to Budapest, but probably had not been used.

At the time of Remagen, the Reich was already in shambles, and my config was probably not very feasible.

I have a Trumpeter's Karl in my stash with an ammo vehicle. I plan to build a Sowinsky Park dio with both vehicles some day.
So it's always interesting to watch somebody builds a similar project.

Do not forget the concrete plate

Mine will depict the Karl while still at the station, so not in the park...
As a matter of fact, the ammo panzer will just drive from its's wagon. I will depict only one here, not the full set... There will be something left to guess...

At least 1 m. of rails will be used. Simply because of the amount of wagons I want to use.
The width needs to be determined. I think about75 cm.
