Finally got around to mixing up some proper Russian green (I hope). My pre-shading worked out rather well but the pictures didn't capture it. I'm still not sure what if anything further I want to add but I at least can start on the enhancing painting. Here's a few pics of progress with the first one. Hull halves are not yet attached.

Cheers,
Jan

I have made a little more progress on my KV-1. The base colour is on. Next is the weathering of the tracks and details painting.

More to follow.

Well the Finnish KV is getting close to finished, what I am finding hard to understand is why the paint looks better to the eye than to the camera.

Darren, your Finnish camo is looking good maybe the flash is providing to much light causing the colors to look to lite

@Jasper, nice clean build there I like the tow cable turn buckles did they come with the kit or are they AMPE

Sal, the Trumpeter kits come with those turnbuckles that Jesper has used.

Sal thank you for the comments. The turnbuckles are in all of the Trumpeter kits so yes there should be two in your KV2 kit.

Be careful when you remove them from the sprue as they are pretty delicate and can break easily.

Darren, I like that Finnish camo. I have decided that it is time to paint after finally producing an acceptable tow cable.

I have a question regarding stowage for the KV. What sort of stowage would go on this monster, I cannot find any photos to give me a clue the way the view ports are located and the layout of the tank does not help me with any rough ideas. Did the crews hang any bags like those on M4s and where were the tarps placed, I have tried different placements but everything that I place is in the way of a functional part of the tank.

@Bigrip74 - Bob, I've looked at a lot of wartime pictures of KV-II's while searching for images of the KV-14 (SU-152). Even the captured German KV-II vehicles are from Spartan to devoid of much external stowage. On the turret, those two prominent (taller) dome shaped protrusions are the sighting system. The three open ended protrusions on the turret (and those like them on the hull) are periscopes.

Hope this helps,
Jan

Nice work Bob. From what I have seen no KV had much stowage if any on it. The Russinas where so short of stuff it is not a surprise they where not festooned with much stuff like some allied tanks you see. The other reason could be that anything useful on them would have been spirited away in the night by the peasants who would have had nothing.

@ Jan & Warren, thanks for the information that settles ot off to paint now. I made a color chart of the paint in my collection, but do not know which is correct for Russian armor.

You could use almost any shade of green and challenge anyone who said you were wrong to prove the colour wasn't right.. I think the Russians just slapped on whatever they could scrape together. I doubt there was anyone coming around to inspect the tanks saying "no sorry that green is not to specifications and the tank will need to be repainted before we accept it for service". It would more likely have been "you are wasting time putting paint on it when the pig-dogs are ravaging the Motherland?"

From what I have read the KV2 was so heavy that the turret could not be rotated unless it was on a fairly even surface. If you want to busy it up a little you could show some troops getting a lift (why walk when you can ride), and if they had given you some hollow fender braces you could have placed a Tarp or two through them.

Darren, I just finished watching a video on the KV and they said the same regarding the turret.

I put some color on it (XF61) and will give the paint some time to dry then go over it again to catch any light areas.

Here is my KV-2 in German service. sorry about the lack of in progress photos, build time has been at a premium as of late and I have been plugging away just trying to finish this thing. Here it is at the painting stage, everything went together rather well except for the rear mounted ammo carrier which was a bit rather warped and quite a pain to get to line up and look right.

I am going to try and tackle the tri tone camo job they had on this beast for the planned invasion of Malta...wish me luck.

Warren, it is the Trumpeter KV-2 754(r) kit. These Trumpy KV kits are nice to build and can be found cheap (got this one for 12$ at the LHS.)

Hi fellow KV-fans! Finally got some time to proceed with my project. Here´s my "girl" after all smallest parts added. It´s got Friul-tracks, Aber barrel and some parts from Eduard PE set. After these pics, I removed fenders and all roadwheels for a wash to get rid off all sanding dust and grease. Now it´s drying and hopefully tomorrow is time for a primer.

Keep up the good work.
