I managed to get started on my Jadgtiger this week. Steps 1 and 2 are easy, if a bit tedious. Sprockets, idlers and suspension arms are all assmbled. One thing to note. Each of the two H sprues that contain parts H3 and H4 seemed to have a part that was mislabelled; marked H3 on the sprue but really H4. If you dry fit the parts when its time to mount them you'll catch the mismarked one.

Excpet for mounting the final drives (A17) I skipped Steps 3 and 4 since I won't mount the roadwheels until later. I completed steps 5 and 6 which involve assembling and mounting the exhausts on the rear armor plate, and glueing it to the hull. It seems that in many cases the jack and jack block were left off the JT's because the vehicle was so heavy that no jack could lift it. I filled the holes for the jack block with plastic rod, and will shave off the jack mounting brakets.

More later...

Hi Folks.

Firstly, I must commend all the contributors for the excellent builds here, which are quite inspirational.

Secondly, I have not posted for a while due to health problems and domestic to-do projects....

....however I have now got back to building Tigers and here is an update of my progress so far.

I was brought a Dragon 1/72 King Tiger for my birthday, so I decided that it would be a good second build for the campaign. Unfortunately I forgot to photo the progress of the build (having too much fun) so here is the progress so far and I will detail the finishing process as I go along. I have made some progress with my Elephant and am still bending and sticking PE to it, it is progressing but at a slower pace.

Here is the progress so far.

The Dragon model (No.7362)

The box contents.

The build so far.

The crew members I will be using.

The progress on the Elephant.

Well it's back to the workbench and get some more stuff done, I hope you like what I've done so far and look forward to any comments you may have.

All the best,

Paul

I'm really enjoying all the good looking builds!
The end of the tourist season here in "Fabulous Las Vegas" has left me swamped at work, so my progress has come in bits and pieces.

Zimm by Eduard, primer by Rustoleum. Tracks are Tamiya's own AM set for this kit. I assembled the tracks yesterday, they are being left in place for a few days to completely harden and prevent shrinkage.

The Tamiya track set is identical to the kit sprue which contains spare links for the turret and their mounting brackets. The AM set is just six of these sprues.

Hey Tamiya, think you could maybe include this in the box?

Oh sorry, you couldn't market these at such a ridiculous price if you did eh?

Wayne,
Nice progress on the KT! Fast too! How did you find the Eduard zimm to work with? I used a set of it on my Elephant and kept having bare metal show through the paint on the edges where I handled the kit while working on it.

Guy,

Being brass it posed some interesting building procedures. I had to predrill all the holes for the cables, tools and what not in the hull. Then, after mounting the brass, I drilled from the inside out. I did the same on the turret and hull rear plate. I used Gator Grip Glue to give some working time as I am quite a fumble fingers.

I used Mr Surfacer to "edge" the brass which wasn't all that necessary. While the Gator Glue dried I clamped it pretty well with popsicle sticks and some good clamps.

My initial application of primer on the turret rubbed off as I handled it to mount the spare track holders. Since I specifically "degreased" the PE with laquer thinner after I glued it in placed, I found that interesting. I used Rustoleum Primer which is usually really tough.

Apoxie Sculpt was used for the MG ball. This was my first attempt at any kind of zimm, much less using putty. It isn't perfect but hey I'm happy!

Wayne, I wondered about the tools and tow cables. The Elephant doesn't have nearly the same amount of gear on it's sides so it wasn't as involved. I've got the Eduard KT zimm set in the stash, but have been very hesitant to mess with it. I'll be watching your progress closely for ideas and suggestions on making it work.

Tracks are done, hull is assembled and all primed. Now if it weren't 115 degrees here, I might get it painted!
Pics to come.

Jagdtiger Update.

Finally got back to my bench after a long week. Managed to get some more done.
I found 2 errors with the instructions. Step 9 says to add 4 x D12. The part should be B12. The other error was also in step 9. The part they call for is D20 and the real part is B20. They stumped me for a minute.

Here is my progress.

Lower Hull

Upper hull/Super structure

Hopefully I get some more time tonight and maybe tomorrow.

Cheers gents

I like Jagdtigers!

I had a narrow window yesterday after work where the temps weren't so bad here. Humidity went up a bit so that allowed me the opportunity to basecoat my Tigger.

We grow wheels here in the desert.

I was online researching sPzAbt 503, 504 and 505 last night. I actually found a shot of my tank, Tiger 213 of sPzAbt 505.

These are from another company (1st) but seem to have been painted by the same maintainence crew. This gives me a good idea what the overall camo should look like.

Looks good, Wayne. Nice KT reference pictures - I have not seen them before.

Looking forward to see the camouflage.

It only got to 101 at noon today so I took the opportunity to continue. I took Tamiya Red Brown and thinned it with some medium laquer thinner. I tried to replicate the pattern seen in the photos. Then I lightened the red brown with some dk yellow and panel faded the camo.

I feel I got pretty close. The actual tank seems to have been repainted at least once, so whatever I came up with will be ok.

Wayne, the cammo looks great, and I really like the way the zimm looks with paint on it. I really have to re-think my previous opinion on those Eduard Zimm sets!

Thanks Guys!

This was my first Zimm, and the first time I used PE to this extent. I have always liked the Tigers of this Battalion, be they Tiger I's or II's. I'm ready to push to the finish, so tomorrow should be it.
