You don't see many UC's - keep it going Delbert.
Matt - it's looking real good. One question I hope you can help me with is what is the rack used for on the left side (in front of the grouser holders)? I'm going to need to scratch one but thinking I can cover a lot of it with a tarp or something.
Well somehow I broke off and lost the little vision scope thing but I think the Tamiya part or a tarp up there may work

Greg: I really am not sure what the rack is for. I'm don't do very many Allied kits. This campaign was only brought about by the Axis of Armor campaign being a hit.

Hey Greg..
I've build a few Tank Destroyers and that part in front of the grouser tracks looks like some welded on brackets holding 3 extra track links.
If you have an Academy M-10, M-18, or even some of their sherman kits the extra parts Spruce H has something similar with 2 sets included for it. Though the track links included on the spruce for them are only the rubber block type. and I think the links sit laying down instead of being on edgewise.

I believe he means the rack forward of the one holding the tracks horizontally. I haven't applied the one with the tracks, yet. But, I have found two photos that appear to have a piece of canvas in it. The dust cover for the muzzel, perhaps?

In this photo is the rack I believe he is referring to. I don't have the rack holding the spare inserts built yet.

1. Right, that's the rack I was referring too. On another forum someone thought it was for the drivers hatches (waterproofing? like on the Pershing)
2. Delbert - so the rack with the track links should be faced down? I did see a pic like that.
Sorry my pic and description was misleading

OK guys
I see the rack you are referring to now..
I've just gone through Squadrons, Ospreys, and Concords books on Tank Destroyers and I've found a lot of photos showing it.. they all look empty, though in one I think there was an ax hanging out of it and several that might have been of the same vehicle had a rolled tarp along the top of it.
and as for the mounting of extra track links.. I think there were as many ways as could be found to mount them.. I was just saying the ones in the academy m-10 kit were different. In looking through my references I'd say the one in the photo here with them edge on might have been one of the more popular ways prob a unit standard as I say many photos of them..

Rei: You must have been stupendously good, this year. All Santa brought me was reindeer poo. Guess venison for Christmas Eve dinner upset him a little.
Delbert: I have built the Academy M10. A fun build to be sure. But I missed the rack on it. I'm not sure if the piece was ommitted or that I just wasn't paying attention.

Wow, you must have put out a really big cookie for Santa this year, Rei! Great looking kit. Looking forward to follow your build.
I am making a very old school kit for this campaign. The Fujimi 1/72 KV-1. So far it is building into a nice kit although I believe the road wheels are too small. I have not decided on the camouflage yet, but maybe one of those early war winter schemes.
More to follow.

Nice progress guys.
Well my hope of cracking on with the Churchill have been dashed due to bargin hunting with SWMBO and general Christmas activities, but I'll post up what I get done before Campaign end.
Great stuff folks. I had hope to get several tanks build but obviously that was not to be.
Cheers

Nice progress guys..
and Matt
you prob didn't miss it.. its not called out for in the instructions.. several of the Academy kits include a Spruce H, so far I know for sure their M-10 gun motor carriage and their Red Army sherman include it.
Has quite a few handy bits on it. such as extra bolt heads in various sizes, foundry casting letters, some wing nuts. plastic buckles for straps, (though they are not very detailed. a couple of jerry cans and jerry can holders, ammo boxs, sherman style extra tracks lengths, and a couple of spare track brackets with tracks for them. I used a bit off of it on my last jeep build. notably the jerry can holder..
It is a pretty handy spruce for the allied builder to have in their parts bin..

I would have posted this in November, but due to school and laziness I'm posting it now. I built one of the Trumpeter KV-1s, and I forgot to upload the photos of the finished model so I will do that in a later post. Here are the photos.
That's all I have for now for my work.
Just out of curiosity, Jesper:
How's that Fujimi kit? I'm asking because that was my second armour kit and mine was covered in flash and was an awful kit but yours seems to have been completely flash-free and the kit doesn't seem as disproportionate as mine, if that makes any sense.

Mark, my Fujimi Kit had almost no flash on it and the fit is decent - especially considering the age of the kit.
The dimensions of the kit are not very good. The drive sprocket is way too big and the road wheels too small. But it looks like a KV-1 and is a fun build.
I have made a little more progress and added mud to the suspension. Looking at the pictures I now notice I have made a really bad mistake. I have mounted the drive sprockets in the front. That is what you get for building too many German Panzers
More to follow

Hello everyone
Ok here is todays update on my Universal Carrier Build.
Some More Assembly, crew fitting, and scratchbuilding
I got the crew mostly built and fitted into their positions. The driver is the hardest one to fit in as his compartment is a little small for him but I think I have him set. The gunner wasn't to bad, and the radio operator is easiest of all. Here is the pic.
Next up. I've been checking out photos of these carriers in several reference books and I've noticed that almost every photo showing them in NW Europe shows jerry cans either strapped to either side of the back or in field expedient racks welded onto each side.
So I decided to try and scratch build a couple for mine. I'm using 2 british war department jerry cans from the Tamiya Allied Vehicles Accessory Set No. 229 and some evergreen strip styrene .010 x.040" (.25x 1 mm), which looks to me to be in scale. the .020" wide looks too small and the .060 looks a bit to heavy handed.
Here is the photo.
Would really like to hear any of your thoughts on the jerry can rack..
thanks
Delbert
