Hi Nigel,
I feel like Hawkeye in that episode of MASH where he loses his mind in his quest to get some ADAMS ribs over to Korea from Chicago....
So again, I'll have an order of Fried Calamari and your Poached Pear & Arugula Salad for starters....... and for the entree,.... I will take that scrumptious Porter Seafood Bowl with your choice of Chardonnay..... For desert, I'll gladly sit on a slice of Chocolate Walnut Cake possibly over some Spanish Coffee (not on the menu, but I'm sure it won't be a problem)
Nigel,.... if I'm ever within 500 miles of your establishment, I'll gladly detour for this........
(boy,.... am I ever hungry!!!!!).................. you don't deliver... do you ?!? ;-)

I've just recieved my P-51B Mustang in the mail from 18Bravo and hope to start building it later tonight. Since tomorrow is my only day off for the next month, I may turn this into a 24 hour build.

Hi guys,
If you're ever in the area definately drop by for some superfresh New England fare.
I really hope to see PolarBear...to think, all the way from Sweden because of Armorama! That would be cool!
Sorry for the tangent...I'll keep on track...if anybody has the old Heller RF-84F kit with the Suez markings I'd love to do a trade...maybe for a nice bottle of wine? :-) I'm probably going to try my first Allclad aluminum finish on this one, so if anybody has any advise that would be great.
thanks, Nigel
...oh by the way Frank, forget the chocolate-walnut cake, you have to try our banana cream pie! I'll start experimenting with freezing/shipping methods...we'll get one to you Hawkeye!

Hey all!
In my search for pictures of 'ground targets' I cam across 2 nice links that I want to share with you all:
First this inspiring great Suez Crisis diorama with a AMX, jeep and figures:
http://www.petitrain38.net/suezgalerie.htm
Than this one (don't know if it was allready mentioned):
http://www.britains-smallwars.com/suez/suez-index.html
And, does this count a 'ground target' also?
http://www.britains-smallwars.com/suez/David/Major_D6.jpg
Paul
PS: 18Bravo, were you still looking for '56 Suez jeep pictures?
Or is this (the remains of) a MUTT?

Thanks for the links Paul. Some good phots there.
I have a question about the markings on my P-51 Mustang. I have found several reference drawings of the Israeli P-51 with the black and yellow stripes and don't know which is correct. One shows the white roundel with blue star on the fuselage just behind the canopy, with the black and yellow stripes directly behind the roundel. The other dipiction is the same but the black and yellow stripes actually bisect the Israeli white/blue roundel. Does anyone know which is correct?

Hi VonCuda. I´ve studied the blue/brown P 51's a bit, since quite a few of them came from sweden, and it seems to me like most of them were painted in the blue/brown cammo some time before Suez and striped just when the war began.
The stripes were placed at roughly the same place on all planes, but not allways in the same manner. Some had one wide yellow stirpe with thin black edges, but most had five equally sized b-y-b-y-b stripes.
If the stars and numbers were allready painted where the stripes shoud be, the painters didn't worry much. It seems a bit like "Yo, buddy. My stripes covers the star." "Cool mate, but why do you give a sh-t?"
Like always, I'm at my work computer so I dont have my pics here, but if you go into http://www.geocities.com/cape canaveral/7934 you'll see the most common result.
And on http://www.wings48.com/index.shtml you can browse around and see some differens profiles, and also which number were based on which squadrons. Somebody here told me that "Scorpion" squadron (105'th) had mostly yellow spinners, and the others had red, at least when they got the blue/brown cammo.
But then again, the #38 that I'm building can be seen in two Israeli musei, with different stripes and one red and one yellow spinner. Gives you some slack, doesn't it?

Whoops. Got the stripes backwars. They were y-b-y-b-y on the Mustangs, like on most others.

Thanks Longknife!
That is exactly what I was looking for. I've seen so many built models and drawings that showed the stripes in different locations. It's nice to see some examples of the original planes.

Looks like I will have to modify my Israeli entry. The Squadron order with the Revell (ex-Matchbox) Dassault Mystere IVA arrived without the kit. Seems they are now out of stock.

I'm thinking of an Israelian ( M38A1) Jeep as second entry.
It's hard to find pictures of these and even harder to find pictures of these during the Suez Crisis.
However, the M38 jeeps were exported to the middle east during the mid-late 50's, so they must be out there!
I have seen pictures of M38 Israeli jeeps with white and black stripes on the front, are thse used in the Suez Camapign?
Am I right to spot M38 A1 jeeps on the 3th and 4th B&W picture on this site? or are it just 'normal' jeeps:
http://202.org.il/Pages/kadesh/sinai/sinai_main2.php
Were these M38 allready used during the Sues campaig or not?
Please, somebody tell me if I'm right or wrong!?
BTW: 2 nice video's of the 1956 Suez Crisis are to be seen here:
http://www.menziesera.com/years/1956.htm
(althoug, the first video is wrongly called: 1956 Six Day War...)
And a very complete list of used "ground targets" by the Israelians and the Egyptians can be find here:

I'm at a bit of a stalling point on my Mustang. Most of the subassemblies are done, as is the majority of the battle damage. I'm just waiting to visit a nearby one in person to get the colors right, and get a good view of the seat. It's one of the biggest deficiencies in an otherwise great kit. So in the meantime, I took my M3A1 with me this weekend to work on as I'm not doing any mods to it. Not sure if the interior was white as well, but I think it will be more interesting with an OD interior. I'll paint it and the OD parts of the Mustang together as I really hate cleaning my airbrush.
All it will need then is the seats and a few other small bits.
Since I already did an M47 and a Centurion before the campaign started, anyone mind if I throw an IS-IIIM into the mix as well?

Hopefully I will be able to make some progress this weekend. I'm building the Trumpeter Mig-15. This is my first Trumpeter model, and though it has been generally good, I've built the cockpit and the instrument panel was a really odd set-up, being comprised of a clear peice and a thin bit of plastic with the instrument detail printed on it. It didn't look particularly convincing, and I would have just preferred an injected plactic instrument panel with detail I could have dry-brushed. Do other Trumpeter kits have this feature?
Anyway, hopefully I will have some progress pics in a couple of days.

Yes, the P-51D is similar-an opaque panel, then a printed film plate of the dials, covered by a transparent piece. I haven't gotten to it yet, but I think if the clear protion is masked right, it should give a good feeling of depth.
As for the question on the stripes on the Jeep, they would not have been used in '56. The air recognition signal then was the blue and white St. Andrew's cross-and even then I don't think it was used on the softskins.

Hi gang!
I just read in a book about the IS3 that this type of tank wasn't encountered
in the battle in the Suez conflict, probably due to Egyptians holding it as a deep reserve.
Only some 11 years later Israeli troops gave the Egyptian JS 3's a beating.
Taking that into account, I think I should change my entry?
I lean forward to some type of Israeli Sherman, probably M1.
What do you guys think about it?
Cheers

I just did a quick "googling", and the only photo of Suez crisis
Sherman showed some M4A3 with 75 mm short barreled
gun and early narrow gun shield, fitted with smooth dished
road wheels and sandshields that looked like that of the M24
Chaffee (?!).
EDIT: that photo was from 1948
On the other hand I read on the israeli-weapons.com
that Israel recieved some 205 Shermans from France
in 1953-1954 and that most of those tanks were fitted with
the HVSS suspension.
Can any of you guys confirm this info?

Hey Pedro. I checked in "Isreali Shermans" and the the Isrealis had a company of M50s (VVSS, M4A4/m4 Hybrid/ M4A3 hulls , M4A4 re-engined with 9 Cylinder Engine) , M4A1s (76 MM, VVSS), and a variety of 75MM Shermans (some converted from 105 gun tanks). The M50s came in by LST on the eve of the war. Hope this helps a bit.

That sure helps a lot, now I'm I can go with Italeri M4A1 with some minor mods. If you could only confirm that some of the M 50's had the HVSS then I'd have the chioce of either Dragon's M50 or the Italeri's Sherman .
Cheers
Pedro
EDIT: I just dug out info that only French tanks thatt made to the op. Kadesh were VVSS .

Hi y'all! Back from a fantastic vacation in the US.
You seem to have managed just fine without me. At least one new participant, and a couple of new entries! I wish to welcome Lap Man to the campaign! Great to see some more armour!
Thanks for the links 007 - especially the Israeli one. Lots of great pictures found when browsing! Unfortunately, my Hebrew isn't up to par.
I wouldn't know one jeep from another; I'm afraid! I'll await your confirmation regarding the M38A1 before I add the jeep to the list of entries.

I'll probably do up my Matchbox Meteor NF into an NF.13. I may build that last to see if the Mystere gets restocked, although I have next to no resources on the Mystere as far as interior or details.
The PE set for the Il-28 is no longer in stock at Squadron. Grrr. Could it be that others are doing Suez builds?

Hi Bjorn.
Welcome home :-)
The artwork is nothing to do with me my friend
We hit Sweden overnight from a show in Frederikshavn the night before so I may pass through Malmo sometime in the early hours so I will give you a wave as we sweep by PM me and I will let you know exactly what Im up to and who with.
Only another 3 weeks and I get to carry on with the P47 and start my Suez entry :-)

if you pass through Malmö on your way to Sölvesborg, make sure to squawk me and I'll buy you a pint!

Just to let you know, I will be doing an Isreali M50 and if all goes well ( :-) :-) ) an Egyptian vehicle. I enlisted an forgot to include the vehicle I was doing. I have also checed around a bit and the Italeri kit would work fine for an Isreali M1. They had both the oval and round loaders hatches. I think a M38 jeep was not available until latter and a "willy's" would fit in better.

Great to see even more armour, Doug!
May I suggest a SU-100 for a possible Egyptian entry?
Now we have ground targets from all countries exept Britain (but who would want to build a stupid Centurion anyway...)
Cheers!
