Bon soir, mes amis! Just back from a 4-day weekend in beautiful Paris!
Great to see that this campaign has gathered even more participants during my absence!

Looks great, Grant! It seems like the detail level is pretty high on that model! It would be nice to see a close-up picture of the cockpit!

GaryKato: Great news! Everytime you support the local hobby dealer, an angel is born!

I was curious if anyone could point to any more info {pictures mainly} of A-1 Skyraiders involved with this action?

Hi there, Gordon! Why lurking in the background, when you may join the fun! You would be more than welcome, especially if you're thinking about building a Skyraider! No A-1's, I'm afraid, but the Brittish had quite a few AEW 1's. They were Glossy Sea Blue overall, white code and serial on the fuselage, white carrier code on the fin, with 30cm stripes:

(You might want to check out this build for inspiration)

You'll find info and lots of pictures here, here and here. Sweden bought a couple of the FAA Skyraiders, and some awesome picture material can be found in the walk-around section of the IPMS Stockholm site

Ps. I noticed that there are some conversion sets and decals out there... So, are you in?!?

Once again, I tip my hat to you, Andy! The models may be simple, but the results are great. How do you accomplish the "worn"" metal look? - And finally a model on a stand!!! I haven't seen that in many a year!

I look forward to seeing all four entries side by side. With your pace, that should be before the end of the week....! Mmmm, Sea Venom....

Ps. Extra praise for giving some interesting history facts regarding the aircraft that you're building.

You know better than that! :-)
I hope your pre-shading turns out well. I must confess that it seems brave to make your first try on such a relatively dark camouflage. I hope that you'll succeed!

I want to add that my (first) entry will be a Israeli Dassault Mystère IV in 1/72 (the old Matchbox kit) with Isradecals and some aftermarket parts.

Welcome to the campaign, Peter! We're looking forward to your Mystère!

Sahariana, Pedro et al: Please post many in progress pics of your builds. I (and certainly many others at this "Aircraft" campaign) don't know anything about building AFV. I would love to learn some tricks ot the trade!

C'mon, Tony! We all want to know which four-letter word that triggered the censorship! :-) Don't forget, however, that we have some young and innocent persons in this campaign!!

I hope you get your pictures up (see my message). Personally, I really want to see the Swedish Mussie!

007: Does this mean that you're entering an Egyptian vampire and an Israeli Texan - or will it be a Syrian Harvard? (= might be accepted)

I'll be posting an updated participants' list in a few days. It is getting LOOOOOONG!

Cheers!

As the pics show I was at a point of getting tracks on the M50 and finishing up weathering and odd details when I realized I had NOT corrected the lower hull on the Dragon M50 kit. I took a deep breath and proceeded with the surgery . I am happy to report the patient survived with minimal cleanup- patching required. :-) :-) :-)
It is the Dragon M50 with academy suspension and an Italeri engine deck. Represents one of the first batch of M50s. PEDRO a note, the M50s in Kadesh were based on M4A4 & M4 Hybrid chassis.

Thanks Bjorn.
The process i use for the worn metal is as follows,
1- Preshade aircraft in black over grey primer
2- Several various colours of Alclad 2. the dark aluminium Alclad is sprayed first over the panel lines and at the rear of the plane. Then aluminium Alclad is sprayed in-between the panel lines. I then spray jet exhaust and burnt metal over the rear fuselage. A "mist" coat of duraluminum is then sprayed over the whole model, to blend it all together. (this sounds quite a long job, but i can do all this in about an hour).
3- Gloss coat.
4- Apply decals and re gloss.
5- Apply an oil wash ( quite heavy) of burnt umber. Wait until it is nearly dry and then wipe of with a tissue in the direction of the airflow, you will get a streak effect. In some places you want to keep this effect but in other places, you don't, so just keep wiping it away.
6- Apply a satin coat.
The reason for the stand is that 4 static models won't fit in my display case i have, so the MiG will fly above.
My next project is the Frog 1/72 Sea Venom. The third aircraft that will need re-scribing :-) .
This one might take a while as i haven't got the decals yet. I only ordered them today off Hannants.

this is the aircraft i will be replicating.

You are a brave man India 11a!
Well done it looks good after the surgery.

Pedro, why not build an M4A1? The Israeli's used them in Suez.

I thought about that too, but since I have one M4A1 built I didn't
wanted to double that one. I'll se if I can still cancell the order...

Ok. Let's give it another try.

First a comparision from the book of swedish Mustangs.

Then some internals. Cockpit interior and wheel wells. So fas, as I said before, i only brush, but an airbrush seems to be high up on the priority list.

Then the cockpit tub. I looove cockpits. You can fiddle with them for ages, only to realize that everything is hidden when the fuselage is joined. I'll propably have to scratchbuild a P 51 or Spit cockpit in 1:10 or so when I retire. Here I cheated, but when the fundamentalists might say that "it shouldn't be british belts in an american cockpit" I say "well, there are more belts now than when I opened the box.

Finally a little off topic pic. The #38 as she was shipped from Sweden to Israel.

By the way. There will come a Vampire from my workbench too. I've got a big box of mixed plastic in my mail, and one of the three 1:48-vampires will be egyptian.

Wooops again. They got a bit big eh. Well, third time's the charm.

Quite embarrasing really, when pics in a forum like this normally is a bit more flattering to your effort than the real live model is. But at this size everything shows.

I'll be back when my blushing cheeks are back to normal

Wow! Them pictures sure are BIG! I've asked LongKnife to try and edit the post, or we might scare away the children. :-)

Pedro - I hope that everything works out. I was also going to suggest the M1. The Egyptians had a couple of Shermans in their 3rd Armoured Batallion etc, see here. I take it that you can't build the Sherman III:s (M4A2 w/ 75mm) but what about the M4/FL10!? Dayan mentions a couple of conversions (dozer, recovery etc), see at the bottom of the page. Given my almost complete lack of knowledge regarding Sherman versions, this might be just as well be totally impossible!!!

I don't suppose that the Israelis had any other of their many conversions of the Shermans already by 1956...

Sahariana - I don't know much about building armour, but that looks like a heck of a job! I suppose you are going to put some French soldiers in your diorama?

Andy - Thanks for the info. I'm going to try some of the techniques that you mentionned. Since both the Israeli Meteor and the Egyptian Vampire were painted in silver, I am not going to use different shades of metal on the panels. How does Alclad II react to gloss and satin coats? I guess I have to experiment a little!

Personally, I've started on the cockpits! I'm trying out the technique described by MagnusF, using Tamiya German Grey instead of black. I'm still amazed by the level of detail in the Classic Airframes kits, and I hope that it will show once the model is finished. I'll try to enhance them with black washes, light grey dry-brushing etc. If everything turns out well, I just might go ahead and buy their Sea Hawk as well. And to top it off for a Grand Slam, perhaps the new (???) Revell F-84F?!?
&:)

We'll see... Cheers! :-)

Ok. Let's see if we can leave the concept of "the bigger picture".

First the "template". And if anyone was working on #73 - mind that the insignias are on different places from left to right.

Then my #38 close to fuselage assembly.

The cockpit tub, that will be so hidden.

And finally the way she looked before mr paintman came with the blue and brown buckets.

Nope. Not this time either. I'd better cut work now, because there is apparently a major risk of grand mistakes. Wouldn't wanna repeat mistakes this way when designing motorcycles

EDIT: Well! It looks like LongKnife finally managed to resize his pictures! We're looking forward to even more progress shots of your builds! Some hints - Try to crop the pictures so that the details can be shown, without filling the whole thread! Further, try to have neutral backgrounds. You might want to invest in a large piece of light blue paper at the local art shop (should cost about SEK 25 / € 3) and try to rig some proper lighting (at least two sources) - Good luck!

Cheers!

Hi Polarbear

I hope to have a few figures to put in the LVT, not my strong point in modelling. Also hope to set it in a seascape diorama, will post some pics when I get to that point.

Hi guys!

I wanted to let you know that everything worked fine, I managed
to cancell the M4A1 order, and just yesterday won a bidding
for Dragons M4A4 that hopefully is proper chassis for the M50
turret I'm expecting. I will also be scratching the M4A1 engine
deck for this project.

well done Pedro.

Beware that some of the older M4A4 kits lower hulls were a bit too short, I think it should be 5 or 6 mm longer (don't quote me on exact dimension).
Personally I wouldn't be too bothered but thought it was worth mentioning.
Cheers mate.

Thanks for the warning! Not that I'd worry about the correct hull
lenght, but now that you mentioned it, I may check that with some 1:35 plans I have

Hi again.

Been busy in the world of 1:1 lately, building a 450 cc supermotard prototype for the swedish championship. Yesterday, finally, my mailbox got swollen again. I got a box including 3 1:48 Vampires in there, so one of them will end up here.

I assume Egypt had no F.1's (with the squarish fins) but were there perhaps any T.55 twoseaters? PolarBear seems to build a FB.52, and so could I, but why make more of the same aircraft? The Wyvern squadron seems to be able to fix that by themselves :-)

Indeed, my friend;

Check here.

I have not been able to post pictures of the Vampire markings since my camera has been down and out the last couple of days (is it the heat?) . Nor have I been able to post pictures of the work I've done with the Vampire and Meteor Cockpits. The level of detail in the Classic Airframes resin is amazing! I hope to get the camera fixed soon, so that I can post pictures!

How is everyone else doing?

Cheers!

I got a start on mine recently - I have the true details cockpit for my mosquito painted and installed, and the fuselage halves joined. I got so excited about getting the cast off my left hand last week that I forgot to take pictures of my progress! Then I remembered I needed to get my B-25 for the "show your teeth" campaign finished pronto, so I went back to working on that...

Sahariana - that ground target is looking mighty good so far!

Hi.

Fuselage is joined on #38 Mustang, but I'll spare you my trials for pictures right now.

PolarBear: Thanks for the tip on the T.55 Vampire. Mine is a HobbyCraft, and I just read a comparision between that and your Classic Airframes one, and to say the least - it was not to HobbyCrafts advantage.

Anyway, I just sanded off the edges on the bigger parts and looked down the cockpit well. It's BIG. And it really calls for more bits and pieces, levers and buttons, Cola-can holders and gps-equipment than supplied in the box.

Can anybody give a good advice. Considering that going both ways is too timeconsuming (after all, it is summer) should i be PC and correct structural flaws, och just go with the fun part - detailing?
