1⁄35Ardennes 1944 - Ridin High!
But then the new Military Modelling was out (I’m an avid reader of this
magazine) and I saw a picture of a column of Tiger II's with some other smaller
vehicles. After some research it appeared one of these vehicles was an Sdkfz.
250 halftrack, but of course I didn’t have one and to make it complete I really
wanted one per se. But I only had a week and a half left. So at the first
opportunity I went to
http://www.modelplaza.com in Purmerend and bought the vehicle. But then I
was convinced I wasn’t quite there yet because in the picture in MM, I saw some
soldiers standing and talking. I had seen in a Dragon catalogue the Peiper
group, Kampgruppe Peiper - "Joachim Peiper and staff, Ardennes 1944" (kitno.
6088), and I wanted to get that one too but I couldn’t find it in the larger
towns in the area. So as an emergency measure I went to a very small hobby shop
in Alkmaar, of which I knew had a (large) collection of Dragon figures. But I
wasn’t sure if he would have this kit. So I drove down there at random and this
time I was lucky.
With only a week and a half to go, I put together the Sdkfz 250 like a mad man,
and that Peiper group too. Despite the time pressure it was an easy task. I
encountered no problems assembling the Sdkfz. 250. It was a nice model to build
except for the tracks, all single links. The colors I used for the 250 where the
Humbrol colors 83 and 67. Humbrol 83 as the base color and 67 for chipping. I
did the interior colors as I saw fit because these were not well described in
the instructions. Again there are no markings on this vehicle because I did not
have them for the right unit. But I didn’t think it was very important because
it was a fairly old vehicle that had survived many an offensive and had been
deployed all over the place, hence the elaborate chipping. I put this vehicle
together in a week!!!
