It's big, it's beautiful, and mine should be delivered this week! However, now that I see it's sheer size, I'm thinking, "Gdod Grief, what I have done?"

David,
Keep the bags in the boxes they are sorted into. For each step, remove the bag you need, and cut the parts you need.Replace the bag immediately.

Thanks for the info:
Is there a north american distributor for pendinghaus or does one have to order directly from them in Germany? Is there any other company that is contemplating a release as well?
Thanks!!!
Luis

Dora Decal
If I am not mistaken, Soar Art is contemplating producing the decals and the correct barrel once they have sufficient information. Perhaps it's better to wait awhile and see how Soar Art would address this problem. HTH.

I've just been lucky enough to buy this one from a local model shop in Swindon where I'm working at the moment. It's one of the few to get to the UK.
It was a case of walking past the shop, looking in the window,,every day for about 2 weeks, and then, go in. At that point, I was committed. I haven't built anything in about the last 15 years, but this one was too good to miss.
Does anyone have any ideas about the figures to accompany it?. There aren't any with it, and it seems as if there won't be a dedicated crew for it, and it will be a shame if it's there on it's own.
Also, does anyone have any idea where I can can the optional aluminum barrel assembly from?. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks - I guess that once you're a modeller, you're always a modeller. This one is a project for my 12 yr old son andf me. It will be a bit of a difference for him, but I'm really looking forward to it.
Good Luck

Great Models has the Dora metal barrel bits in the US but from the UK you might want to try here (http://www.modellbau-center-koeln.de/shop/index.htm). You might want to hold off for a while until someone decides what's happening (if anything) over the supposed inaccuracies with the kit barrel and also until after you have tried the kit barrel: assembly-wise it is pretty good other than have to polish up the world's longest seam.
Trumpeter does a crew set for their Leopold (I thing Dragon does too but haven't seen it down-under) which would give you some representative figures but to try to recreate the entire crew of 500+ would cost way more that the Dora itself (herself?).
I think it is a great idea building this kit with your son - despite it's size it is not that complex or difficult just BIG. Were it not for 50 km and a mountain in the way + her new maternal responsibilities, I think that our #1 daughter would be totally hands-on helping me with mine...in her words "It's ugly but way cool ugly - can I have one?"
Enjoy...

Dragon's figure kit DML6201 is ideal for the Dora. I've used 3 of the kits plus a number of others that seem to be looking the part. The best thing about the DML figures is that they come with 2 complete sets of arms for a variety of poses.
Here's a link to Great Model. com's web page for the item. http://www.greatmodels.com/~smartcart/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=DML6201

I have used about 2 of the model Master smaller (1/2) oz bottles and have only painted about 1/3rd. It may take as many as 5 ,I feel.
I have used about 2 complete bottles of Ambroid proweld as my glue of choice. i only have the shell hoists and the minor ladders and such to add,and those should not take much more glue.

Thanks a million Carl...
I will now order the paint I need and I might as well get plenty of GLUE to put this pup together... I have finished the 7'6" cabinet that will house her. All I need is to find decals and order the glass that will seal her in her designated "place of pride" in my model room... If my friends did not think me nuts before.... The doubt will now simply fade with the words ..."what the !#$%#^&*^% is that!!!"

If you mean the rail bed ties - I painted them with a Tamiya Flat Khaki, followed with a wash of Humbrol Thinner and Winsor & Newton oils Ivory Black. After that had dried I did a dry brush of a mixture of 70% Yellow Ochre and 30% Titanium White.
If you mean the rail car wooden beds - I painted them with the same Tamiya Panzer Grey followed with a wash of Humbrol Thinner and Winsor & Newton oils Ivory Black. After that had dried I did a dry brush of a mixture of 70% Yellow Ochre and 30% Paynes Grey.

Hi Tom:
I have been watching and learning from you build as I work on my Dora... I purchased the German Peddinghaus Decals on Ebay..... item number 220144637347 ... they are imposible to find unless you look on ebay.de he still has some available for about 19E plus shipping I received them in just about a week and the quality and instructions are quite good. You have to cut them with a good ligth and they are many white markings. Not quite like the OTB decals in which you can separate them these you have to cut individually. Hope this help, your experience has unquestionably helped me.
Luis.

I've been following this thread with some interest as I've just bought one of these monsters.
If you don't want to have to bid for the decals you can order them direct here...
http://www.peddinghaus-decals.de/
Also, I am wary not to start construction in case some aftermarket sets appear...the bad news is that I emailed Eduard and they say they have no plans for one so I guess it's up to Aber maybe or possibly do without...

Well,I received the Peddinghaus decals today and they look to be spot on.
The only downside that I can see is that they are all printed on a continuous carrier film so will require careful cutting out.
They come with a 3 page placement guide, most of them going on the railcars, and I'm now itching to get started...
