Has there ever been a mobile artillery campaign?

I know there has been a tank destroyer campaign and an artillery campaign, but what about this?

would anyone be interested in participating in one?

I have a 150mm sFHI 3/1 Geschutzwagen I need some motivation to start working on, and campaigns are perfect for that..

EDIT: This campaign is approved now, please sign up here!

Got a M40 sitting on the shelf. I would certainly be interested.

I ran through the past Campaigns and didn't notice a SP only build. Could be another good one.

Depending when it runs I could be up for it.

I have one sarting on July 4th for Artillery towed or SP guns over 200mm.

As for start date, I need a few other campaigns to either finish or get solidly going myself before I can fully commit as well.

I'd say August or September would be a realistic start date given the timing of the other campaigns in the cue, and running for 6 months?

well, I was thinking self propelled artillery, as opposed to anti-tank guns (there was an anti-tank gun campaign a while ago). So only the Hummel would qualify.

On the other hand, a general SPG campaign would work too. Or maybe even a "Topless SPGs" campaign - no roofs allowed.

Ok, how about this, chime in on your preference:

1. Self-propelled indirect fire artillery, or

2. SPGs without lids.

It sounds good, Vance. But what about including SP AA artillery as well. That would make it possible to build SA-6, Gepard, Mobelwagen etc.

In my humble experience it is good to make the campaigns a little broad without making it possible to enter anything and everything. This gives more participants and keeps the campaign more "alive".

Just my 10 euro cents (=12,2 USD )

I vote for self-propelled indirect fire weapons.

SPG without lids I think will restrict the participation of many who would otherwise want to get in on it. Just my two cents.

I have an Italeri M109A2 next up in the queue, so I'd be up for an indirect fire campaign. Since it's been waiting nearly twenty years, I'd prefer that to an open-top campaign - the Tamiya Wespe has been around only twelve years or so and hasn't reached the right level of maturity yet.

Ok, so it is starting to look like my initial idea is the better one - self propelled indirect fire.

It needs a catchy moniker though. I guess we could go for an acronym: "SPIF". I could use other suggetions though please.

As for the AA suggestion... hmmm. I like mobile AA a lot. It is one of my specialty areas. Personally I'd rather have it have it's own campaign. There are some mobile AA platforms that could qualify in a SP artillery campaign though. E.g., 88s were mounted onseveral different chassis, and 88s could be used in the indirect fire mode.

Something indirect fire and AA have in common is the need for high angles of elevation, so there is some relatinship.

Point in fact "self propelled artillery" doesn't even rule out direct fire SPGs like the Nashorn, though indirect fire or the stipulation of large angles of elevation does. Strictly speaking, it doesn't even rule out standard tanks. There is certainly a large gray area using the "artillery" term.

hmm....

hey,
it would be a large gray area, you'd have to look at the possibility of adding many Tanks then, like the 105 Sherman,s and Centaur's,etc;,fine tune it,like you had mentioned, topless ,this way, vehicles like the Hummel or Nashorn will work, also the M8,or turretless, then the M8 would be out,but theirs still a large variety to pick from, even Tamiya's Japanese SPG could be used.

Ok, I've been thinking about the gray areas.

I think the easiest thing in terms of rules is to say it must be "self propelled artillery designed for indirect ground fire support".

That does, unfortunately, rule out most (but not all) self propelled anti aircraft vehicles, but to tell the truth, I'd like to see a vehicle mounted AA campaign some day anyway (I personally think that would be a cool add on campaign once this one is done).

Open or closed top allowed, as are all eras, nationalities, etc.

This allows lots of things, such as:

M3 halftrack with a 81mm field mortar
M109
MLRS rocket launcher system
60cm Morser Karl
Wespe
Katusha rocket launcher

...and much more.

Looks like enough people might be interested. I'll wait a bit longer for feedback before submitting the idea though.

I'd be interested in this campaign building either an M107 or an M106A1 if your allowing tracked mortar carriers, or indeed both!

Ok, cool. that brings us well over 10 willing to enlist. I'll get to proposing the campaign officially in the next day or two, depending on how work treats me. =)

I'm up for this too. I have an AA Abott and a Maquette Bishop to build so I'm happy.

What does being 2 I/C involve?
