Nice looking Grizzly, Graeme!

Thanks for the comments on the camouflage. I am also pretty satisfied with it.
I have now finished painting the details. I used a mix of reddish brown and some red dust pigments for the exhaust. The rough surface might be a little to heavy, but that will be fixed on the next AFV to get this treament

Next is the decals and then some weathering.

More to follow...

I had started an M38 Wolfhound for this campaign but it was rather badly damaged whilst I was away recently in hospital for a minor op.So I looked around for a quick project to enter instead and keep me busy whilst convelessing. Reading Karl Martin's book "Vehicles of the Irish Army" I came across this ,complete with a set of 1/72nd plans which I enlarged to 1/35th.

Its a 1941 Irish Army Thompson/Ford Armoured car built on a modified 1937 V8 Ford truck chassis. The two major problems initially apparent, the mudguards and wheels, I felt could be overcome, so I started with the turret.

Some build structures with multiple boxes others use the bread and butter metheod I prefer using the boatbuilding system, a central keel or keels add shaped ribbs and skin with 10 or 20thou card.

The bodywork is done basically the same way.

I started a Revell BTR-70 a few weeks ago, simple kit, I was building the lower hull and suspension arms.
Yesterday I was planning to get some Workbench hours and accomplish maybe 3 to 4 hrs on it.
And I lost the lower hull. Don't know how this happened, I usually lose small parts and search for them for hours not the lower hull of an armoured car...

I'll have to work on some other kit.
BMD-1 from SKIF or a 234/2 from Dragon.

Impressive project, Mecanix. You are already doing really good progress on it. Looking forward to see more.

John, bad luck to loose the whole lower hull. Not easy to replace I hope you will have more luck with next project.

The cleaning lady comes home when I'm not here, so that might explain the problem...Anyway I started the SKIF BMD-1 last night.

As so often I find that parts of a build which at first flush might be problematic turn out not to be and parts that should be straightforeward give you trouble.
The mudguards came from a Marquette FAI-M, bits of which I had left over from a Spanish Civil War thing I had a few years ago. Luckily they are made from quite solid plastic so making V cuts, bending and clamping to shape and then applying CA glue in large dollops worked. Lots of sanding the result and it gets close.

It was finding the mudguards that also solved the wheels problem. It occured that the prewar Russian motor industry had a lot of Ford input and I checked a drawing of the 1937 Ford V8 truck chassis with pictures of the Zvezda Gaz AAA truck kit and the wheels and chassis appear to be very close. God bless Detriot standardisation.
A friend had one and was very keen to get rid of it .

The Vickers I think is a spare Resicast barrel and the domed hatch,is a plastic scew cover.
This I had planned using early on as the size and shape were ideal but it defied all the glues in my workshop till I unearthed some strange stuff in a local craft shop. As I say its the easy one that gets you.

She is a bit battered and war weary, partly sloppy workmanship and partly by design.
The next steps are a couple of coats of Quaker Grey, the standard Irish Army colour of the 1950's and then a coating of white as one of the 8 vehicles sent to the Congo in early 1961 with the Irish contingent with the UN.

That is as soon as I can find an accurate or legible photo of such a car.

Jesper thank you for your kind words.

Great work Miloslav! It's your well known quality.

Mecanix: Nice scratchwork! Do you have many experience with it?

Wow! Another masterpiece from you, Miroslav ! Simply a fantastic job you have done on that one. Thanks for sharing

Impressive progress, Mecanix. Your little wolfhound is coming along nicely.

I am waiting for a delivery of MiG weathering products for my Puma. I will try to see what all the fuss is about with these products.

Wow, mecanix, that armoured car is too cool, and scratchbuilt too, wow!
I really like your Stryker, Miloslav!

I would like to order some Real Model conversion for the AFV club Stryker kit too, but quit frankly, they are just too darn expensive for me.

This is one of two I am working on for the campaign. I have the DML BTR-70 underway and I started this one a couple nights ago. Tamiya's M-113 with the Armor Icon M113 EAAK Gen5 conversion. The conversion is designed for the Academy kit according to the instructions, but it is fitting fine on the Tamiya kit. I had to scratch the side armor shields as the kits ones were warped really bad. They didn't come out too bad and should look good under paint. Still a few little details to add to them yet too. They BTR is just about ready for paint. Hopefully that will happen shortly. Thanks, "Q"

Very interesting conversion, Matthew. I will look forward to follow this one. I have seen some of these in the TV I think, but not even realised they were based on a M113 chassis.

Looking forward to see more

Here's the other half of my duo that I am attempting for the campaign. DML's BTR-70. Less than thrilled with the kit, but it's the only game in town. Kinda clunky, but it getting there. Still need to paint the exhaust and add the weathering to it. The camo pattern is my own doing. Decided to play with the Iwata a bit and see what I could come up with. Floquil Soviet Sand base coat, with MM OD over that. As it sits now, it is gloss coated and awaiting decals and weathering. Hope to finish it in the next day or so. Thanks, "Q"

Well, one of my two kits is done. Strictly OOB witha spare tire from the spares box. I have had that tire in there for well over 10 years. Finally found a use for it Decals were cobbled up from my spares box as well....all 4 of them. Maybe I can get my Kazan finished too. Keeping my fingers crossed as there is a lot of work yet to be done. Thanks, "Q"

Thanks John. A little bit of progress on the Kazan. My conversion didn't come with the Mag-58 mounts so I had to scratch build them. Not totally accurate, but close enough for me. I need to add some Mr. Surfacer to them to blend in the tubes better. I got all the windows in the dog house masked and the side plates too. Will add some more minor nuts and bolt heads here and there, some wire steps, and then hopefully it will be on to the paint booth. I plan on adding a ton of extras to it, and considering all that I am wanting to add, it will take about as long to paint the extra gear as it did to build and paint the vehicle Anyway, here she is thus far. Thanks, "Q"

Hi all,
finally I can join after having enlisted for a while.
I chose the NATO AIFV by AFV Club. In fact, it's a Belgian AIFV and don't really know why AFV named it NATO.
Anyway, I started this morning and was quite disappointed with the hull which was badly warped causing some fit trouble
The way AFV molded the parts is unpleasant too as extra work will be needed to remove the attachment points from them. I tried to show that on the picture #5.

All in all, it seems it's a good kit with sharp details, some anti-slip coat is present (but underdone in my opinion), clear instructions and even a sheet of PE parts.

That kit has been on my radar for some time now. Curious to see how it builds up Olivier. I hear you about the attachment points. Had the same problem with my Drilling I completed recently. A lof of over engineering too...meaning, they make a simple part that could have been molded as one of two parts into a complex part consisting of 3 or 4 parts. Spent more time test fitting and correcting things than I did building. Lots of flash and heavy seam/mold lines for some reason too. Looking forward to seeing your progress. "Q"

Well, things are moving right laong. I stayed up late last night working on the Kazman, (I misspelled it previously...oops) and set her aside to dry/rest/re-coop over night. Anyway, I got up bright and early this morning and shot some primer on her. I'll let this set while I see if I can find a good match for Sinai Gray. I know AEF was selling bottles of this, but I'm not even going to go there... Thanks, "Q"

Hi Matthew,
I'll let you know what other trouble I will encounter with my AIFV.
Your Kazman is really nice. Maybe you should have to drill some "squares" of the mesh over the engine as it looks like some glue fill them.

Those recent IDF vehicles definitely have a SciFi look ! I hope doing some when I have emptied my so long to build list

Finished and a lot of fun.

This is her in Quaker Grey standard Irish Army AFV colour of the 1950's. She is numbered ZD1763 but I changed my mind beford I started weathering and she became.....

This is ZD 1788 that served with the Irish Army's 35th Infantry Battalion in UN service in the Congo in August 1961.
She was abandoned in hostile territory after falling through a bridge and later recaptured and is pictured in Karl Martin's book. I have left off the bullet holes. I was never very good at doing them. The figure, and I apologise I could never get the hang of them either, is Acadamy Foreign Legion from the waist down, the rest is from spares.

Gentleman thank you for your kind comments,Lars I thought about your experience question and remebered my first conversion/scratch (unsuccessfull !) an M43 SPG, from Airfix bits, in 1961. First one I got right was a Sherman BARV again with Airfix bits, a year later. With that sort of "experience" you would think I would be better at it wouldn't you.
