Here are the events of July 1950, a bit late, sorry lots going on lately...

1 July 1950 - Task Force Smith - named after its commander - fully arrives in Korea. It consists of 406 men of the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, and 134 men of A Battery, 52nd Field Artillery.

5 July 1950 - At the battle of Osan Task Force Smith succeeds in delaying for several hours a much larger NKPA force supported by 36 T-34/85 tanks before being overrun with the loss of almost 190 killed, wounded or captured. This is the first involvement of American ground forces in the Korean War.

6-12 July 1950 - Further delaying actions by American forces in Pyongtaek, Chonan and Chochiwon (with the first engagement of US M24 light tanks) result in NKPA victories.

14-21 July 1950 - In the Battle of Taejon the US 24th Infantry Division attempts to hold Taejon. Although they ultimately fail, the delay caused to the NKPA advance gives US forces enough time to establish a foothold around Pusan in South Korea. More than 3500 are killed, wounded or missing/captured. Among the captured is the highest ranking American POW of the the war, Maj. Gen. William F. Dean, commander of the 24th Infantry Division.

Late July 1950 - In the Battle of Andong the South Korean 8th Division defeats the NKPA 12th Division with heavy losses, forcing the North Korean Division to halt its advance.

On a more personal note: My grandfather arrived in Korea and was assigned to the 1st bttn., 23rd Inf. Rgt. 2. Infantry Division in late July 1950.

Hi Guys, I've enlisted

I'll do the Italeri M24 Chaffee, perhaps OOTB (Although I do have the excellent Formations Conversion).

Cheers

I remember showing a picture of the M24 to my Dad (who fought in Korea) and he mentioned that just about all the knocked out tanks that he saw were those. He did not have a good impression of that tank.

Maybe because at the 'start' of that conflict it was a light tank fighting against T-34 85's etc ?

A nice light recon tank - that's it ...

It certainly wasn't a tank for tank battles. It was for all it's intents and purposes a light tank and not meant to fight other tanks. It certainly was better than the M3/M5 it replaced. As soon as the NKPA had no more tanks, the crews began to like the M24 again (at least as far as I read in the books).

But I do wonder is how they got to call it Panther Pup, to me it doesn't look like a Panther at all...

Cheers!

Hi Guys,
Since I got back into modeling I have built WWII stuff only. But I just picked up an old Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog Tank. Would this kit be an acceptably entry to this campaign. It looks like a quick simple build being that there are 2 other campaigns that start on this date as well. If its ok then I'll be in

Welcome to the campaign Sal! Aiming to be the first finisher again, just like the Sherman Campaign?

The M41 was only used in prototype form in Korea. As such it is allowed, but only if it has (approximately) the correct features and markings (see the discussion on page 1 and 2 of this thread).

Looks like it'll be an M41 campaign...

Cheers!

Had to do with the looks of the suspension. US tanks in WW2 had the same style bogies and that was a recognition feature. The M24 was a radical change in appearance and was more Panther/Tiger-like. I seem to recall M24s being shown to front-line troops to show them "this is one of OURS. Don't assume only German tanks have big road wheels".

I'm in, I've always wanted to build a Sherman with a tiger face painted on. I'll be building the 1/48 Hobby Boss M4A3E8 Korean War kit. Let me know what you guys think

Welcome to the Campaign Jeremy! I see you've been bitten by the campaign bug! So have I... Helps me decide what project to do next...

A Sherman sounds great, I don't think we have a lot of those yet, especially with a tiger face.

So, where are all the shipmates and flyboys?

Cheers!

Thanks Stefan and indeed I have, five on Armorama alone and one each on Aeroscale, P47 Heaven, and Historicus Forma. I'm hoping it'll motivate me to build, I'm certainly getting excited so hopefully that's a good sign

I think I have a good idea of what to do for this campaign ribbon, I'll try to get on it tomorrow and see if I can get it to you by Sat. *crosses fingers that it'll be kick-arse when I'm done*

Stefan: I was able to put in a little work on this for you during downtime. I used the bars from the Korean War medal since I know you were interested in them. The colors worked out really good with the tiger yellow. I added texture and lighting, which I can easily remove if you prefer a flat solid colored ribbon.

Let me know what you think. I'm always open to suggestions

Jeremy, nice work on the ribbon, certainly a lot better than my efforts. The KSM certainly fits better than the UN-medal with the tiger theme. I like it and I will use it if there are no objections?

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback Stefan, and don't knock your work on the ribbon ideas, these things can be pretty awkward to design. Let me know if you want to see it without the texturing, or without the shadows/highlights.

Looking forward to this campaign kicking off!

Here is the same ribbon without texturing:

Jeremy, I like the first one with texture and lighting. If no one has any objections I will upload it to the campaigh sign up page and that is settled.

Cheers and thanks again!
