I haven't been able to find any more pictures of that exact tank, but I did find a few pictures that appeared to be tanks painted in the same scheme, and I believe you're right about the lighting, as both of those pictures shown different colors.

My friend Ciro aka Wakemeup did a tank with the same camo
Regarding the engine deck, looking at the gun mantlet cover and considering the loophole for the turret MG, is a Russian made T-55 (all the Afghan t-55 were Russian)

Yes Orestis it must be a propagandistic pic of Warsaw Pact taken during the seventies or early eighties.

By the way, the second b/w photo, shows Soviet and polish tanks and crews, probably during a joint exercise ...

...well.....Actually afghan were not very "kind" with their tanks....
They used them as Buses...
as fridges...
...and as drying racks...
Joking aside most likely the engine deck was a little bit worn in my humble opinion

Under the fender of a few of those pictures are 3 curved steel sections that look to me like guards to the tracks don't end up hitting the fenders above. Any idea how common those were? Were they on all tanks and have just been knocked off over time? Or just some manufacturers?

(someone will now post a picture of a Polish T-55 with these plates)
Croat Polish made t-55
Anyway, it's true, the majority of Polish made t-55 exemplars doesn't have that plates on them
I didn't ask you why, I'm really curious to see your next step
cheers

The project stalled out, due to life stuff getting badly in the way, and a Massive change of plan.
Probably nothing to add untill well into the new year, I never was one for rushing a model, lol
Here's a hint at my err "change in plan"
It's a scale thickness front armor plate section, dont ask why, just dont ask, lol
Plus a couple of reworked front tow hooks (not finished)
Wow, I've got a pretty good guess at what's happening, as i just started following this build, but I like surprises, so I won't say anything.
