@BBD468 – Gary,

Sorry about your mishap with the Mig filter but glad to hear about your speedy recovery . . . the Force is always with you, always remember that! Looks like all turned out well from the photographs that you posted. And your airbrushed filter concoction has tied in all of the colors together, terrific job at this point of the painting even without any chipping, paint fading or weathering. Take your time with these processes and you’ll surely have another winner in your collection.

Gary, I have used the Mig filters with much success. Like you I think that they need to be thinned so I don’t shoot them out of the airbrush but use a No. 2 paintbrush to apply them to the model taking care not to let the filter build up on any area. The trick for me is in dipping the brush directly into the shaken filter bottle and removing most of it against the side of the bottle opening leaving the brush slightly dampened with the filter (not wet). I then apply the filter to the model using downward strokes on the vertical surfaces and zig zaging on the horizontal surfaces. I start on the bottom of the model and work my way up to the top. There is not enough of the filter on the brush to really tell just how much you’ve applied. It is not until the filter has thoroughly dried that you notice it. It sort of leaves subtle rain marks on the areas that you’ve applied the filter too. I only go over the area once, anymore than that would darken and spoil the effect and ruin the model. Just take note of where you’ve already applied the filter. What ever you do don’t ever apply this stuff with an airbrush it would be like applying it with a wet brush about 6 times or more.

Just voicing my experience with the stuff for you here. The stuff works really well for me in both 35th and 72nd scale. And YES, I have lost a few good paint jobs learning to use this stuff. Hope this helps you out in the future if you happen to try it again. If you do happen to want to give this stuff a try again go and shoot some paint on a sheet of plastic and apply the filter as I have mentioned and see how it looks to you.

~ Eddy

Hey Eddy,

Thanks so much for the details on the proper apllication of the filter. I thought i was spraying a thin coat but like you said when it started drying i was like RUHROW! Wont make that mistake again. Im goin to start the chipping process and im gonna take my time and really be cautious not to over do it. Im gonna let it dry a day or two before chipping. Thanks Eddy for dropping in, Oh and the Merkava ROCKS!!!

Hey Gary,

Sorry to hear about your trouble with the MIG Filter. You did a heck of a save because it sure looks good brother!

I have the Mig Filter for Tri color Cammo, and I really like it. Unlike Eddy, I slather that stuff on wet with a big ol soft brush, and I think it works great.

Looking forward to the next update, John

Phil & John,

Hello my friends! Thanks fellas. Im In the middle of chipping it right now. I started painting Rommels face earlier today and well...it didnt go as planned either. He looked like a burn victim. So i stripped the paint off and ill start him again at another time. Im considering takeing a break from the Greif for 2 or 3 days and work on the 1/72nd Panther D. Then i can go back with fresh eyes on the Greif. Not 100% sure ill do it as im still working on it. But ill see after the chippings done. Thanks for following along gentlemen!

It is a darn fine job Mace! Hmmm not quite sure what need more attention... maybe more chipping on the hitch and tow hooks...not sure it is impressive as it is bro. At this point I leave it up to the master modellers out there!

WHERE IS THE NICELY TANNED FOX!?

Gary,

Beautiful work. Excellent execution.

I would consider adding some more chipping in the center of the canopy rails where it seems the crew would be most likely be holding on as per the pictures below. Also, maybe some stowage to go with it. Perhaps you can scratch the stowage bag seen on Greif in these pictures as well. Finally, the jerry cans were heavily chipped with much of the Panzer grey showing through.

Just some suggestions. Of course you don't have to follow any of them as the model looks great already.

John, DJ, and Dave,

Thanks a bunch fellas! I almost set it aside last night but decided to push ahead. Ill finish it out before i start the next project. I will not get in any hurry to paint the figures now so i can focus on finishing this. Plus my first attempt a painting the Fox didnt work out so well.

Dave i will definatley adress the canopy rail and i will be scratching up a couple tarp rolls and i do have a satchel bag for it. I just dont want it to look just like the pics. I want it to have my own spin on it. It pobably looked much different 2 months before those WWII pics or 2 months after. Anyways thanks for the comments, advice, and support.

@BBD468 – Gary,

I don’t know that it would matter if you left the entire running gear without any chipping, as there appears to be a very thin but opaque coat of find sand on the painted surfaces leaving them look almost like new in the photograph that Dave ‘armour_dude’ DaSilva posted? The same effect can also be seen on the rear portion of the vehicle in the second of the two photographs, but in that photograph the rubber portions of the wheels appear to have more fine sand on them. At least that is how these areas in the photographs appear to me.

I would consider Dave’s 2 cents on the heavily worn and chipped fuel and water cans, supplies in that campaign were hard to come by. Anyhow, as your vehicle sits now with the chipping I think that it looks superb!

Hello gentlemen,

James - Thanks so much man. If i can get my nephew to get out the photo booth maybe we can do another round for armorama. Whatcha think?

Jeff T. - Thats ok Jeff, your silence speaks volumes! I know its only temporary, youll be back! Thanks man.

Eddy - Thanks my friend! Yeah, i have a few things to adress but im definatley near the finish line. Im not in any hurry to get back to the Rommel and Cpt.Hook. Im really itching to start the 1/72nd Panther. So well see what happens when the Greif is finished.

Hey brother Craig - Thanks man i appreciate you following along, your support, and making me laugh. You, Phil, John, and the Jeffs keep things light and fun! And some times a little freaky.

Thanks to all!

Hi Gary,

I believe the drive sprocket on the 251 had a rubber outside tire on it. It was the center little roller teeth things that pulled the track along. Might want to throw some rubber color at those.

Finishing looks great as always.

Hi fellas,

Made a lttle progress tonight. Got the rifels installed and the Mg 34. Also weatherd the Jerry cans. I need to add the rubber tread to the sprocket as Jesse pointed out. Thanks for the heads up bro. all thats left is what ive mentioned plus antenna, Headset and throat mic for rear radio, Satchel bag, and some scratched tarprolls, And i forgot to paint the grip on the MG 34. I think i need to tone down the rifles. the look like they were just bought at a gun store. Anyways, here tis!

Any more suggestions are most welcome. Thanks fellas.
