Hopefully this will turn into a build log as I am looking for just a few more photos of this REALLY RARE vehicle. The F/A pusher tractor was used in conjunction with a forward tractor for bringing the really large Russian ICBM's from the assembly site to the missile silo base.



The missiles where so heavy and large that the trailer itself was powered using electric motors. These motors ran off a generator tied into the PTO on the 537, As you can tell by all the heavy wiring on the forward probe there was also a generator on the pusher truck as well.

I started this thread over 30 months ago in the hopes of scaring up some additional reference on this very rare vehicle. To a degree this has worked and now today the model has progressed to the condition you see above. Fast forward to the last page of this thread to see how things are going now.

Right now my problem on building the pusher tractor is one of riches: I am currently working on no less than three M23 Ammo Trailers, a MAZ 537 with accruarized driveline with a Verlinden T55 engine added and a MAZ 543 Scud Missile Carrier converted to an airport crash/foam fire tender truck.

I know, I know: Get to work - stop crying in your beer!

Michael, just saw this and I like the idea you have going for your project. So, what I like to know if you started it yet? I sure will like to follow it. Btw, you have any pics of the MAZ airport fire truck that you can share? TIA

One of the hold ups to working on this new MAZ-537 Pusher tractor is the conversion shown above that I have been working on. Converting the old Scud missile TEL into the MAZ-7310-AA60 airport crash fire truck.

And the other hold up was this MAZ-573 tractor as shown below:

F.Y.I. The Scud-543 kit has no driveline at all. The MAZ-537 kit has some driveline included in the kit but what is there is wrong. See below:



This driveline layout is correct for both the MAZ-537 and the MAZ-543.

It seems that the two different threads have sort of gotten intwined regaring the MAZ-537D & E & F plus the Fire Tender. The Fire Tender thread can be found at:

Early MAZ-537E with PTO driven electric generator pulling smaller active drive trailer. (No pusher tractor)




Note: On the second photo the trailer employs the same large tires, wheels and drive hubs as the 537E tractor itself. I have no idea how the electric drive itself was set up but it is clear the trailer shares some of the same drive and suspension components as the tractor.

(I suspect each trailer axle had a double ended electric traction motor just like a railroad locomotive. Other than that I imagine all the suspension, U joints, gear hubs and brakes were the same as those on the tractor.)
