Looks amazing Steven. I don't envy what you'll have to do to paint the interior once it's finished.

I know

I am trying to keep the build as modular as possible but painting will be problematic

Hello,

I have been working on four different elements of the Tiger, the engine, the hull storage bins, the turret storage and the main gun. I started work on the Main gun and turret storage because I was getting tired of working on the hull but still wanted to work productively on the project.

Firstly this is the first look at the turret with everything in place.

and the stowage locker

Next the hull storage bays

all made from plastic card and here is an image of it in the tank

There is lots more to do!

Lastly the engine, the Maybach HL230. I sprayed Tamyia primer on it because it was difficult to judge depth with the yellow Verlinden Resin.

I have created metal collars in the rear armour so the engine can be installed/removed easily

And here's an image of a real Tiger 1 engine in June/July 1943 probably in Russia? Prepairing for Kursk? I am sure someone will tell me I am wrong

and mine

Again lots for me to do, I have lots of wires to add and place once the engine is installed and painted

Thanks for looking

That Tiger was built in December 1942 and has a HL210 engine. It wouldn't be exactly the same as your HL230.
In particular, that rod going along the compartment wall would not be used with a HL230.

It was part of the linkage between the engine and the fans. Do you intend to build the HL230 fan gearboxes?

Hello David,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I will probably build the fan gear boxes, are the specs on your website?

Thanks

I am wanting to see the update.

Hello,

Pics are back up, I had a problem with Photobucket but that has been resolved. They will not be down again (hopefully)

I have been quite busy with the model and working on different aspects of the kit. Quick update tonight to show you.

The first is the fan gearboxes, I made them from resin, stock plastic card and masterclub bolts. I then primed them and added them to the tank. They will need some wiring but they are in place and do not foul the engine installation. (David when you read this I know that you may be thinking that they may be in the wrong orientation within the engine bay but you and I are the only people who will realise)

Then I sterted to think about making the hull floor. I am waiting for some Aber PE to be delivered to finish these off.

and then I started thinking about the Driver's storage and radio operators storage/chair

There is still lots to do on the project. I have to remake and alter components because they dont quite fit, 70% of the components of the tank have either been heavily modified or scratch built to there are bound to be some problems.

I dont think I realised the full implications of what I started in September 2012

Thanks for looking

An absolutely insane amount if work and all of the highly skilled variety. Simply amazing Steven. Well done. I can't wait for the next update. You do some of the most detailed work on this site. You and Nick should go into business together on a DVD series about scratch building. Id buy it at any cost!

Later.

Hello, The amount of detail in your model, dizzy, what you do is amazing, I would like to have as much determination as you. The effect will be amazing, you plan to somehow expose these details because, as you close the hull is nothing you will not see, I did the Tiger of Academy with interior and when assembled none of my work is not visible.
Good Luck!

I've just discovered this build log. This is easily the most incredible, most detailed tank interior I have ever scene. Your skill is amazing, as is your patience. Did you by any chance keep track of how many parts you have in the interior in case I missed that info.

Hello and trhanks for the kind comments.

Good to see you Matt

Dave my scratchbuilding is ok and developing all the time, I have learned so much from building the Tiger and I have made some decisions that I would not make again. My build is not modular enough and I fitted too many parts too early in the build process which is having an impact now. Nothing to substantial but I am thinking about developing a written build process for the next build.

Pawel, thanks for the comments, I am planning on leaving the top of the hull unglued so that I can take it off.

Mike the parts count is in the many hundreds and will be in the low thousands when the build is complete. This tank is very complex and I have simplified the build in some aspects inorder not to be bogged down. For example, I am not including all electrical wiring as in 1/35th this would be a nightmare to add and paint.

The build has slowed at the moment and I am working on other projects unrelated to moddling (Kerbal Space Program) but I am working on finishing the transmission and the radio. Also I have to think about how I am going to paint the hull......

Getting Kerbals into orbit and landing them on other planets is suprisingly difficult, as is orbital docking

Thanks for looking

Hello,

I buy the Evergreen card from a German Company called ArsTecnica through Amazon and the Griffon model wire through a great company called Historex which is based in the UK.

Both companies ship quickly......to me anyway

You do realise that you will have to paint those tools and they are not better than the parts from a Dragon Model Tiger 1

Hi David,

not sure if you missed out on that on purpose... The first and last torsion bar on each side was thicker than all the others.

The 1.3mm brass(Albion Alloy MBT 13) bars are of the same diameter as the torsion bars, so by using the 1.4mm (Albion Alloy MBT14, or SFT7 Set) ones i created the optical size difference. In your model, you culd also take the 1.6mm (Albion Alloy MBT14, or SFT7 Set)version and just slide them over the torsion bars, which would reduce size accuracy though, as they would be slightly too big, none will notice though, I guess. Anyways, I opted for the 1.4mm version, and once painted and all is sealed with putty (not done yet) I think this should work out????

If you go on my page, I uploaded one photo already, it shows how this would look like. It is also possible to add the 2 in the back without cutting. The front two ones, you would have to cut in two in order to add to your model, due to the glued inside pieces. In case you have not glued the torsion bars already, this should be a fairly simle detail that could be added.

My page (will be updated later today):

Hello Everyone,

I am back with the Tiger build, I needed a break from the project and I was and still am playing Kerbal Space Program

Thanks for the tip Alex, but I am going to resist the urge to rip the guts out of my Tiger to replace a torsion bar that you will not be able to see once the engine and gearbox are inplace. As tempting as it is

A small update today, I spent a few hours upgrading the drivers foot pedals. The detail was off in the first build and I came across a reference which illustrated the correct alignment and placement of the pedals.

This is the first image with my new camera ! A Sony Alpha a65. It should dramatically improve image quality (when I learn how to use it)

Thanks for looking

Steven, I've just spent 2 hours reading and looking at 20 months of your fantastic build photos. Your attention to detail and scratch building is excellent. It's not difficult to see where you could spend a thousand hours on a build such as this one. You've got me chomping at the bit now to see more. I was expecting as I finished each page to see this big cat close to be completed and painted. Now I'm on the edge of my seat wanting more. Good luck with your little one and the space program. I will be watching for your next update. But please, do take your time. I can wait.
