Stug IV - Tamiya kit for me... going to do some research, see if i can do something different (or find a new skill to learn - maybe more complex PE and soldering)

I know how you feel Rob. I'm thinking of doing something like Phil (asmodeuss) and Gregg (GregCloseCombat) did with a bridge, maybe like modifying the Bronco Baily Bridge kit with a StuG crossing it.

Also, for the WWI Campaign a little bit of dio work for me should keep the build interesting.


I'm sure whatever you DO come up with will be great!

have a large sheet of polystyrene I am considering making a "generic" dio from... will see...

for this, a fair chunk of PE detailing from Eduard - may try the PE skirts... and of course the option of Zimmerit... that could be a new skill.......

willd o some more research - see where the Iv was used, find some markings for something other than the box one..... perhaps

yeah liking the StuG - lots of opportunities for individuality... for this it will be a StuG IV (Tamiya) so skirts, zimmerit... maybe some PE updates (Eduard seem to have a full set for example)... again battle damage (missing skirt, maybe a replaced "different" paint job). Not sure which theatre - may look at what AM markings are available.....

EDIT can anyone confirm what version of teh StuG IV this is - guessing early but...

I built this a long time ago (back when all they had was tube cement) and it's an Early StuG IV.

If you click on the manual at the bottom of your link (in the blue), a PDF will show the parts layout and on sprue B parts 21 and 22 show the early round muffler. If it were a late one it would have the individual vertical mufflers.

Hey folks!

Being a fan of stugs I too have enlisted, however...I haven't decided on a kit yet.
I am new to the site, and to the hobby in general so I haven't got a substantial stash yet. I've yet to even buy a stug but I saw this as a good opportunity to start looking in to which one(s!) to get.

I was wondering if the good people here could assist me?

I'm not fussy on whether I start with an III or IV, essentially I just don't want the first model I buy to be one with errors or poorly made pieces which is why I'd like to go with Dragon - I have heard mixed reviews for Dragon's kits but one thing that stands out is their attention to detail so I'd like to give one of their Stugs a try first.

However, I am seeing a very common theme with complaints about their kits and that is Zimmerit...People mark the models down if they haven't got it and while I can understand that it's something people want, there is almost always a kit of the same model that does have it - So why do people feel so hard done by them releasing non-zim models?..
Not trying to start a war here just generally confused as a "newbie" to this hobby. Is there a delay between releasing the two which has lead to people buying one and not knowing if a Zim coated model was around the corner?

Anyway, that aside what would you guys recommend for a first StuG? I have a few things on the bench so this start date is perfect for me though I'd like to get it in advance and have a good look for any AM parts that may be required.

As I said, I'm not fussy and eventually I'd say I would like to have most of the stug family so where I start isn't too important. I would like to start with something that builds up into a good Eastern Front model though, as I favour that theatre.
Any suggestions?
The #6644 model someone else mentioned here looks nice, and with winter tracks it would be fairly unique.
Also there is a cyber-hobby model #9119 which is fairly cheap in a few locations, but I'm not sure if that is a good thing.. Some warn that cyber-hobby tend to use old models and repack them with some units to make up the price - Is this the case with this one?

Finally, are there any IV's out there which would stand out amongst the many many available kits?

I'm sure the early StuG IV's had zim.

And Alex... thanks for joining the StuG Campaign! I believe any of the later DML/DRAGON kits will fill your needs. Most of which do have the zim already molded in and are really nicely engineered kits too.

Hey Alex, welcome to the hobby!

You will notice fast enough that there is always someone who doesn't like a particular kit for one reason or another; zim/no zim, too many/too few parts, too complicated/too easy, too many details/not enough details, one piece rubber tracks/individual links and so on and so on...

In the end the only important thing is that the kit makes you and you alone happy and that you enjoy building it, painting it and then having it on display in your room/home.

I myself only recently started the hobby too and have likewise fallen in love with the detail rich Dragon and Bronco kits. Although alot of people complain about the instructions, 99.9% of the time it works out fine with a bit of common sense and test fitting pieces before blindly glueing them together.

As to which particular Stug model would suit your needs, I'm sorry to say I haven't looked into the stug line much yet as I have alot of other projects going. What you could do is head over to the "Panzers Return" campaign thread, there are a few beautiful Stugs being built there and you can see and compare some of the Dragon kits.

Ok, if I have a year time to finish Stug, I'll jump in. I know I have a mountain high stash unfinished kits, that should finish first but I give a try for this campaign. Not sure yet what to build but maybe 1/72 early StugIII or 1/35 Stug III C/D..

Thanks for the later start date an d longer duration. I do have a few Tamyia kits in which I despise their track bands. Exchanging them will run into drive sprocket/ rear idler problems. Any suggestions? Thanks. I do have a Stug A from DML could do that one in a jam. Assistance would be graciously appreciated.

Modelkastten or Friuls would be my first guess.
