hi all,
need to ask for some advice. While completing the final steps prior to going into the paint booth I noticed that I had an issue. Following the instructions provided in the Eduard PE kit I removed the kit front fenders. Well while trying to mount the PE fenders I noticed that they are too narrow.
Below is a comparison picture between the kit fenders and the PE fenders.
As you can see there is a difference of a couple mm's which becomes quite evident when mounted on the tanks as seen in the picture below.
So any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I was thinking of soldering a piece of excess brass to the outside. The issue with that is how do I then add the lip than hangs down and all on damaged front fenders.
Does anyone know of AM kits for just the fenders?
ok, so let the suggestions come flying!!!
thanks
Dave

Enjoying the Panther build so did start another one earlier this week.
I always love the IR Panthers so I am going to add the older Dragon IR viewers to the great Panther G Late kit. Not going to do anything fancy as far as PE, just OOB.
The lower hull has already been completed and work has moved on to the upper hull.
Seeing that this will be a 'what-if' Panther, for a paint job, I am going to try the 'Octopus' pattern or maybe just come up with one on my own (possibly a splinter pattern.

So much cool stuff going on in the thread so all I can say is: Awesome job everyone!
David: I suppose one idea would be to scratch a fender from brass or aluminum sheet? Might be to fidley though Weird though, are you sure the eduard set is for your kit? Maybe you could buy a new set and then save all the extra goodies for another build?
I got the primer coat on. Used vallejos dunkelgelb. I think it looks the part and has a nice greenish tint. It's a bit dark for use as a base coat but i'll lighten it a bit with the next layer. Sorry for the bad picture, I'm getting a new phone soon...
Kind of happy with the coverage, I got some dust speckles trapped but thats what you get sitting next to the tumble dryer (I have a hard time convincing my wife to do less laundry for some reason). I am setting up a new paint station in the boiler room that will hopefully lead to a more dust and fibre free environment...

I always do a quick wipe down and a few passes with some canned air before I prime N paint.
That is, if I DO get to the paint stage. Nice work Johan.

Johan,
Unfortunately my scratchbuilding skills are less than adequate for this purpose. I tried splitting the current fenders in half and soldering in a length of PE sprue but it was a dismal failure.
According to the Package they are for the Tamiya Panther G Early so it is supposed to be the right fender.
I found some aber fenders that are at a reasonable price so I am going to try those out.
thanks for the comments.
Your work is looking great.
Dave

@Dave--hmmm...that is a tough one. Hopefully the new replacements will work. The rest of the two builds look good though.
@Greg--your Panther looks good to me--clean build, nice camo job, subtle weathering. I can only wish the same for mine.
@John--good looking turm. Can't wait to see the rest.
Also looking forward to watching all the others progress!

Thanks Keith. I tend to be critical. I am jealous of your PE. I swear, always seems like when I get PE looking good, I sneeze hard and all the little wee bits go flying.
Looking forward to the completion of yours.

One last fix to the Dragon kit. Actually two, but one was due to an error on my part.
Looking at step 6, I thought part E16 would be attached after the stowage bin was installed. But the rear light panel (E16) has a weirdly shaped tab that was meant to go into the stowage bin before the stowage bin is attached to the hull. It wouldn't fit otherwise. It was easier to cut off the original tab and replace it with a bit of sheet styrene.
While working on the periscopes on the clear plastic sprue, I noticed part L2 which is the clear rear light. I removed the solid plastic bulb, replaced the 'brackets' with sheet styrene, and now it is ready for the clear bulb after painting.

@Keith - That's uncanny
What version will you paint up? I'll do one of the Kursk 1943 markings. Right now leaning towards the "745"!
Nice job on the extra detail to the rear light, worth the effort

I may be back in. Joe Osborne is sending me Italeri's Bergepanther. My only concern is the Verlinden update set being unavailable. I'm hoping I will have enough time to build an accurate representation.

@Johan--Not too uncanny. I saw your photo setup and mimicked it. Now, the fact that we have identical builds and both own Tamiya paint stands is very uncanny!
I'm thinking of going with the Pz. Rgt. "Grossdeutschland", Karachev 1943 nr. 124. It has the most tri-color (without the stripes) of the kit offerings. I'm not sure about the Panther 'turret art' decal though.

Hi Dave:
It's a nice looking panther, and hopefully the Aber set will do the trick. But there is one thing I see that might help. That is that you seem to have the fender to far over towards the centerline of the vehicle. The fenders on a panther also had a verticle piece that was outside the hull side wall flange that the tow shackles hook on to. And it looks in the photos like you have the fender completely covering that sidewall flange, and the fender should not be covering any part of that piece.

Have fun with that - given the small mountain of Bergepanther info I have collected, if I can be of assistance, please drop me a line.
Incidentally, I just checked my two most used Aussie on line stores, and they don't have the Verlinden update set either.
Regards
Rob
PS You might like to try military-resin.com - they may have one.

Gary,
I reviewed the pictures and see what you mean but the pictures are misleading as I took the photo from a left angle. The fenders are actually butted up against the flange you mentions. When comparing the eduard fender to the part fender you can clearly see the eduard part being to narrow.
I ordered some aber fenders which will require a little modification as they are for the G/F models but at this point I am out of options.
So that being said, I have put the twins off to the side for a little while as this issue took the winds out of my sails.
Where in Alabama are you from? I'm originally from Alabaster
Thanks for the advice.
Dave

Here's where I'm at:
The turret received a bit of a highlight. I'll do the same to the upper hull next.
Lower hull got too dark, need to do something there. I think I will go over it with some pure dunkelgelb and lighten it a bit
The barrel is supposed to be a new replacement that is yet to be painted, I plan to darken it a bit with washes and then give it a satin coat
Also, i primed and base coated all the other small bits and bobs so not that far from starting assembly and weathering

Got the upper and lower hulls of my Lake Balaton 'G' joined together, needs a bit more flat coat then on to final bits and bobs and weathering. Playing around with a new camera right now so apologies for the quality of the photos.
