Tat - that's good to know. Thank you.
I did some touch up in the road wheels. Wouldn't the inner road wheel edge be metallic looking because the guide horns were rubbing on that edge? So maybe some XF-56 metallic grey?

I've also been tossing the idea around of adding stowage.
What's your thoughts on this?

Correct. On a Panther the inner road wheels had the paint worn off and were not only bare metal but shiny almost chrome looking.

It was not uncommon on German tanks to see crew helmets hung on the outside. Ammo crates on the rear deck also add to the visual appeal, especially if one of the crates is open and some rounds are exposed, as if the crew were in the process of resupplying their ammo load. You could also hang a bucket off the rear from one of the exhaust or the towing shackle.

I seen a lot of pictures with exposed ammo in the crates. That's a great idea. Also the buckets, but I don't believe I have one. I also seen a lot of them had small wrapped up cable hung on stuff. I need to try and find some of that.

If you're not too picky, try the Tamiya Jerry Can set (35026). It has 4 buckets. Be wary though as there's a Tamiya Fuel Drum set which has none. I made that mistake before and was about to write Mr. Tamiya a nasty note till told otherwise!

Ok I did a bit of stowage mock up. Let me know what you guys think. Too much? Needs a bit more? Let me know what you think about that wrapped up cable at the rear.
Tat- thanks for that info. I think I'll go without the bucket unless I can pick one up soon.

Cheers,
Dustin

I painted the edges of the inner road wheels. The two closest to the front are painted in Metallic grey XF-56 and the last two are painted in X-11. It's hard to tell from the pictures but the rear two are shinier. Thoughts on which to continue with?

I'd go for the less shinier one, metallic grey. Agree it gets scraped to metal but I don't think it should be have that sheen as if chromed. Here's how you may do the mount for the spare wheels:

Thank you for that picture of the mount. How would I go about doing that?

The 3 stubs are threaded rod welded to the turret. They line up with 3 of the bolt holes on the rim of the wheel. I would reproduce this by simply glueing 3 styrene rods with bolt ends from mig or somebody directly to the top of the wheel...and glue the wheel to the turret. Know what I mean?
Heck, even just the bolt heads glued to the rim, and glue the rim to the turret...that should do the trick!
Do what you love, and love what you do... then everything else is simply an extension of that which drives your heart.

I'd stick in a bit of stretched sprue. Note that this is a field mod so you can be as creative how you do the hanger, within the bounds of what's plausible of course. Cheers

I would lose the 250L drum. The open ammo boxes look good. You might want to paint a white cross on the side of the Jerry can to represent a water instead of a fuel can. See if maybe you can find a pair of binoculars and add a foil or paper neck strap and lay it on the turret along wit maybe a signal pistol or map case.

Dave and Tat - Thank you for the ideas on the road wheels. I'll look into buying some bolt heads.
Armorsmith - I'll remove the drum and I found the binoculars and signal pistol. I seen on the box art that the water can had the white cross on it. I'll mask it and paint that on.
I have gold paint, will that work for the rounds? Or do I need to get some brass paint?

A lot of people get fixated on AM brass rounds, but by the time the Panther came into widespread service, the Germans were chronically short of copper (indeed all metals)and were reserving it for absolute necessity. They were issuing steel shellcases (well greased!) to the artillery and to tank units. They even tried steel shellcases on SAA, but this caused jamming in machine guns if the ammo got at all rusty.
Bright silver will be fine.
As for the bright steel on the inner roadwheels, try this video:

You don't need to mask the white cross on the fuel can. These were often just hand painted so the cross does not have to be too neat.

Quick thought--the two exhaust pipes would be rusted due to the extreme heat of the exhaust system, which blistered the paint off very quickly, but the two skinny pipes on the left would not, as they are cooling air intake pipes that cooled the exhaust manifold. This prevented explosions in the exhaust system when the engine was shut off abruptly, as cool, oxygen-rich air could intrude into the exhaust system, and mix with hot, unburned gasoline fumes (the carburetors were very inefficient). This was a quick fix introduced on the Ausf A until the exhaust system could be fully redesigned.

Gerald - Thank you for that knowledge. That's very interesting and I appreciate that. I haven't made it as far as to paint the exhaust yet.

Dustin

I painted the ammo crates and exhaust. I also drilled holes in the exhaust and intake pipes.

I think I'm about ready for some clear. Besides maybe some chipping.

Anthony, thank you very much for the kind words.
I added some chipping and the tow cable and the cable for repairing the tracks. Those will get some weathering after the clear.

Now for clear and weathering.
Cheers,
Dustin
