I just want to make quick progress update on Sd.Kfz.7
Yesterday I painted gray base coat

And today I did some weathering and started slowly putting it together.

Thanks, Bogi! Yes, it was certainly a challenge. Unfortunately, neither my photography nor my modeling are quite up to your level.

Mark, I don't agree with you. I make simple models using simple techniques. And no special skills. Considering photography, I use Samsung S7. It's all about lighting, if you ask me.

Nice start Torsten. Wouldn't guess you had to work on the fit.

Little progress update from last night



Since I am going for this vehicle, I am quite happy with result so far.

Here comes the weekly update of my "Tonner". Frame is completed, but still without the exhaust ....

.... under the roof of the drivers cabin I found this note. So the kit is now 18 years old ....

.... the windows are masked with Kip Tape and Maskol ....

.... some memories came up while I've assembled "my old cockpit". I certainly know this place well, have spent countless days and nights in it and driven 13.000 km in it in 3 years without any accident ....

Looking good so far, Torsten. It has to be fun recreating vehicle you used to drive.
I had lots of problems with my Sd.Kfz.7. As I said that I am happy with look of it, Murphy's law had to strike me. I used Testors enamel dark green because I find oil based colors much easier for free hand airbrushing. When I started with weathering, somehow wash interfered with color and started lifting it on few places. So I repainted all model again, this time using acrylics, resulting in different shade of green. It's a save, but the look is not spot on like in a picture. It's closer to this vehicle:

So, not far of target.
Anyway, I made some progress but I didn't manage to finish this one for the weekend, as I planed.
I made some cowers for windshield and rear basket and made a rack for Jerry cans.


I have little bit of work still, this is where I am now.

Great save Bogi. Don't put too much stock in old photos. The pigments change over the years. It could even be colourised. I like the shades you have chosen.

so, no one has any ideas about what to do with the road wheels on the M-29? Ive hit a build block and cant move forward on this till i get something figured out. All ideas and suggestions are helpful and welcome. besides throw out the kit.

I'm still a little unsure of the issue you have. Am I right in assuming Monogram give you one piece wheels that are like a tube and that is the issue?

If so, What I have previously done, whilst a little time consuming, came out quite good. I presume you have a razor saw, as you cut off the front and rear, so....

1) Find a study flat board
2) buy some 'Post it' notes narrow enough to fit between the saw teeth and the top of the saw (they need to sit flat against the saw face)
3) get a good strong clamp

see where I am going here?

Okay, work out how many 'post its' you need so that when you sandwich them between the saw blade and the board, the teeth are just high enough off the board that they are along the centreline of your road wheels when they are placed flat on the face of the board. Solidly clamp the saw blade to the board with the posit-its between, so the teeth face the centre of the board. Then place a road wheel flat on the board and move it up to the blade, and carefully rotate the wheel against the teeth and cut into the wheel until you have a grove the depth you need.

If the saw cut is not going to be wide enough for what you need it to be, then instead of centering the blade, set the depth so the distance between the board and saw teeth will create a road wheel section that is the right width for the outer wheel segments. Then set the height again to make the cut for the other segment so the centre groove is the correct thickness.


To make the two wheel segments you now have look like 4 segments, if the razor saw is too wide for the gap between those wheels instead of a saw blade clamped down, use a scriber blade (one that removes a thread of plastic) or a new scalpel blade clamped down to make a thinner groove. You do not need to go deep with these grooves as the pairs were close together. Again set the height to scribe where you need. TIP: Clamp the blade so only the very tip protrudes at a slight angle over the post-its. That way you can push the wheel up against the post-its and help hold it in place and make it easier to scribe against the tip.

In regard the scriber blade I have one of these tools and the blades can be acquired separately:

Failing the above, there is always the option of submerging the vehicle in sloppy mud:

hi Peter and thanks for the help. I think im going to use a circular template and 1m.m. thick styrene and see if a leather punch will have the right size punch out. If that fails I was thinking along your train of thought though it would be a long slow project.

Bob, you have big problem with this wheels. To be honest, I had to Google "M-29 wheels" to understand what was the problem since I don't know anything about this vehicle. I hope you will find a way to fix them.
Sd.Kfz.7 is about finished, all I need to ad are dials which I yet have to order.
So, I turned my attention to Maultier.
Yesterday I managed to put all main parts together and today I continued with painting.
First I did some fixes on base gray color,

and let it dry for two hours. Then I sprayed some hair spray, followed by dark yellow. Let it dry for 30 minutes, and started chipping.

Immediately after, I applied my home brewed wash.

And I am almost finished. No gloss clear and unneeded waiting time. Tomorrow will be fun day - adding wheels and tracks.

Oh yes, I know that also just too well. Had about the same problems with Valljo painting over Gunze on my last build, a South African Saab Gripen, when cracks came up after painting. I know it's not your piece of cake but you might like to have a look. If you scroll down the page to the bottom you'll see my extra work on that bird ....

.... already some primer on the underside ....

.... and some test fitting. Yes, it's beginning to look like my faithful old "Tonner" ....

.... yesterday was primer day. It looks a bit strange in that "UN Colours" ....

.... what the he...! During painting I touched the drivers window a bit too strong and it went loose a bit on one side ....

.... okay, surgery! After 15 minutes the window was saved with some extra Micro Kristal Klear. I went through the hatch in the roof with my finger and pressed the window in place again. Hope it stays there now ....


.... I also painted the exhaust with a mix of Revell 83 Reddish Brown and Revell 91 Steel ....

.... this morning I started painting Revell 65 Bronce Green (NATO Green) all over but it's not finished yet. I hope by the end of next week that most of the painting is done. I noticed also that there are no warning signs for dangerous goods included in the kit. So I have to build some scratch from Evergreen profiles. As a "Trappo" (Transporter) I mainly had fuel or 120 mm shells for our Leos as a load. So stay tuned for my next update ....

You are wrong there. I am building vehicles for the last few years. Aircraft's are my first love.

I am waiting for more 1/35 aircraft kits.
I already saw your Gripen post. That was a one great save. That MAN 5t looks really nice. Especially that canvas cover, can't wait to see chipping effect on it.

One more thing...
As I see Torsten, you are using Revell aqua colors. Since they are my primary choice too, I want to tell you that they are, in my opinion, very good for hair spray chipping. If you still want to go for that look... If you haven't try that and you need help or advice, be free to ask.

Nice work on the 5T, Torsten! Mine has the green base coat on it. I'm just waiting for the weather to warm up a little so I can go into the garage without wearing a parka and put down the hair spray and the white top coat. Hopefully this weekend..........
