Well, I just finished washing the sprues of my Firefly, so I should be able to start within the week, as soon as I finish my CF-18, which is nearly done.

Ugghh... slowly.

Structurally my Ferret is now a Ferret. Once I figured out what I was doing with the resin (my first kit) it went together like a dream. Reference photos for what I'm planning aren't too plentiful and those that exist are mostly walk arounds of gate guardians that have been stripped down. Not being a stickler for accuracy however, I'm quite happy with the way things have turned out. The AA kit is awesome and is, in my opinion anyway, the perfect starter kit for anyone who has yet to try their hand at resin.

After many weeks of screwing about I finally managed to get a base of white on. It must have taken about 10 different coats, but its finally something I'm happy with (or at least something i won't glare at in frustration). The issues being a combination of paint ratios, airbrush clogging and a 5 some odd year hiatus since I last built anything start to finish. This will also be my first attempt at weathering, washing, filtering and such so I've been practicing on some of my old projects.

I'll try and get a couple pictures up this week.

Hello all,
I'm ready to start my project for this campaign. It is the BVM AVGP Husky.

The kit is a combo of RoG LAV-25 and Azimut PE and resin parts. A lot of preparation is needed to shorten the 8x8 hull, fix the wrong driver hatch and the engine access hatch as well.

The BVM model is good for an early Husky and I'll build it that way. I just want to have fun with it and try to build another original armored vehicle and for a first time a Canadian one. Next step will be the LeoC2 with Mexas but don't wait it too much, it'll come really later on

Donald: I know exactly how you feel about getting the right colour for a model: when I was building my Universal Carrier, I probably put on about 6 different colours so that it would look real. I'm glad that it's turning out, and that the build went smoothly! As for weathering, what are you going to do?

Olivier: Sounds like a lot of work, I can't wait to see how the build goes! Good luck on your first Canadian kit!

I started on my Firefly a couple of days ago by building one side of bogies. Each one had about 20 pieces, and took half an hour to build. I made some gouges with a hobby knife on the rubber parts of the wheels to simulate wear and tear, so hopefully that turns out when I finish! This is my first Dragon kit, so I was surprised about the amount of work that it took. Hopefully I can get some more done so that I can post pictures of my progress.

Hi Zaltar,
I just started to cut the lower hull to get it shortened. This is not that hard but you have to guess from the instructions where to make some cut-outs. Fortunately, the major dimensions are given.

My current problem is that the resin block representing the central part of the chassis does not align with both the rear and the front part Question to Luc, did you face the same trouble with your Grizzly ? If yes, how did you cope with it. I intend to do some sanding on the inner face of the resin block.

Second bad surprise, the resin roof part is too narrow by 1mm. Nothing that plastic strips and putty can't fix but this is annoying.

Before I forget to remind everybody again, please remember to post a link to your build if it is not on this topic. That way everybody can see your build and we know where it is.

Thanks and enjoy your models!

Oilivier: No, I did not get any trouble with that piece. The RoG LAV-25 hull was cut and the resin piece fitted perfectly. The top resin roof did not fit that well though....

I also have the Real Model Canadian Tank crew that I will be putting in the beast.

I've searched the web trying to find some quality pics of the uniform of a Canadian C2 Mexas tank crew as deployed to Afghanistan, but I've had no luck.

I managed to finish building the bogies yesterday, so I'm hoping to attach them onto the chassis today. When that's done, I'll post some pics. Also, one of the sprockets seems to be bent. It isn't attaching very nicely to the other parts, and probably won't work well with the tracks. Has anybody else had this issue? Are there ways to fix it?

Thanks,

Hi,
here's an update on the ESCI 1/72 CF-18A. I did some research and of the 1/72 F-18 kits out there, this is about the worst. There is a lot of filler used in this kit. The top and bottom fuselage halves don't fit well at the back end and the fit of the intakes is downright atrocious. The intakes could have just as easily come from another kit, I had to file a lot of them away and then use a lot of filler to try and blend them in. The wing strakes either side of the cockpit were another filler problem. As a CF-18 it is not too bad though, all that is missing is the lamp on the port side of the nose. The antenna on the tails are pretty close for an early CF-18A. For the nose lamp I drilled a hole and put card on the inside. I'll paint the inside silver and fill with something clear when the painting is finished. The tails do not have a secure fit either, but I think that the superglue will do the trick.
here's the underside after the top and bottom halves of the fuselage have ben joined. Lots of filler.

Here's the back of the fuselage - again a lot more filler and sanding.

Finally the port side of the nose where the searchlight will go.

Since these photos the paint is on, just some touch up to do and then it will be gloss ready for decals.

Thanks Luc, I have certainly bought a bad kit
I managed to fix the alignment though it is not perfect. I hope posting pictures soon.

Paul: Your CF-18 looks great! Just don't forget to paint the tip of the nose tan; I nearly did with mine!

Working on my Staghound and found out that Bronco is really big on details. Took all the precautions and still lost two details for the engine covers, All I can say is thanks to EIS and all the gear that the troops had strapped to the out side. Hope to have some more pictures up in a little while.

Yes, did that last night, along with the fake canopy, aerials and other little touch up pieces. Undercarriage doors went on tonight, well, most of them anyways.

I've enlisted. It'll be my first campaign here on Armorama after a couple of years of lurking.

I won a Dragon Canadian Firefly recently at my model club raffle, but pulling it out of the stash tonight, and seeing those hundreds (seems like!) of tiny little lugs or whatever that have to be attached to the outside of the tracks...welll...that's not gonna be what I build! Something tells me that would NOT be the best idea for the first link by link tracks I've ever constructed...

So, probably an airplane or helicopter, I've got several Canadian subjects, one I really want to build is the big orange Province of Newfoundland CL-215 Firebomber, but not sure if this would qualify for the campaign? I don't know if this plane is flown by military or not? Can anyone advise?

My other question would be, can I do a figure? Not sure from the rules of the campaign, it says "Your entry must have been used by the Canadian Armed Forces " so not sure if a soldier comes under the category of being "used"? I'm sure they felt like it at times...

Anyway, I've spent a bit of time in Canada, have some great memories, several of my nieces and nephews hold dual citizenships, even worked there enough to have earned a red Canadian Social Security card back in the 70's...still have it in my old wallet somewhere. So looking forward to some fun,eh?

Randall: I'm glad to hear that your build is still going along well. I also know exactly how you feel about small details, half of the time I wonder whether anyone would notice if a ridiculously small piece were missing. On my CF-18, I had a massive amount of spare pieces because the instructions weren't clear enough to show the small pieces

Paul: Wow, it sounds like your build is almost done! Are you using in-kit decals, or aftermarket ones? If you're using aftermarket decals, you should use Leading Edge Decals, a company from Calgary that makes fantastic CF-18 decals.

Michael: I know how you feel about the Firefly tracks, I'm building a Dragon Firefly for my entry, and I'm really not looking forward to the tracks. I'm really sure that the Firebomber would count, so if you want to use that, you can. Also, a figure is most definitely welcome. You can enter with any type of model that you'd like.

I'll be using the kit decals. I have some colourful Leading Edge Decals, but I'm saving them for a better quality kit without so much sanding and filling.

Zaltar,
Thanks for the reply. OK, it's either gonna be the CL-215 or a helicopter. I guess I post in-progress pics here?

Hey, how do I get that True North campaign sticker you guys have in the lower right corner of your posts?
