Better get started then. Base kit: Academy M3 Medium "Lee".

When it first came out I made sure to pick one up intending to have a go at converting it to a Grant, and then Academy put out a Grant so there went that plan. As it is an earlier release it has the too tall M3 bogies, but this won't be a problem as many Australian M3 Mediums were upgraded with the M4 type VVSS.

Hi guys.

This is where I am with my NZ Sherman at the moment:

Some of the goodies I'll be using:

Found some leftover Dragon brass I'll be fashioning into toolstraps as fopr some reason Cricklade didn't carry any tools in them.

I'll be getting some work done this evening and hope to have some update soon.

Rock on

@ Michael: nice to see someone else building an M3, I am building the Tamiya kit but I have not had much success in finding any ANZAC camo references for it.

@ Leo: another nice start, I think that I need to visit your stash and help you with dusting the boxes and maybe talk you out of some that you dont need .

Beefed up the cast structure with Tamiya putty and Humbrol poly:

I know, still got to clean the boltheads. But looks kinda nice I think. Hope it still does after painting.

Great start mick, good to have on board for the campaign good luck with your build.

Well I have finally got something for this campaign, I just won an Australian M113A1 FSV it is the old Tamiya kit but I got it for £15 on eBay so shouldn't grumble, as much as I would have loved to do an ASLAV with all the bar armour and such like I just do not have the cash to spend on it right now .

I have hit a brick wall with my M548 cargo carrier; the individual plastic tracks!!! It might seem to add realism, but is SO fiddly, fragil and frustrating. Have to cut each track segment off sprue, then try to trim exess off, with out them breaking bits off! @#$#@!
Can I change my build to another vehicle? Have re started work on stalled Unimog truck, now that have built up better skills. Scratch building the brush guard for it at moment.

Hello all.

Thought I might have a go at your campaign, if noobies are permitted ?

I have been out of modelling for sometime now , lets just say I ran out of fingers and toes counting the years, but a recent project with my son building an M1 has rekindled the old fire so to speak.

One of my earliest models was an Airfix 1/72 Centurion which I promptly ripped the side skirts off, to make is Aussie !

I am keen to see how far the hobby has come in all these years and I have just ordered the AFV Club Cent and intend to do a FSB Balmoral Diorama, though I do see someone else is thinking along the same lines.

I can't imagine anything I will produce will come even close to some of the stuff I have seen on the site but I'm going to have a crack anyway.

Great Unimog BTW how on earth did you do the canvas cover ?

Canvas cover done with tissue paper, printed on bubble jet printer (much trial & error), attached with diluted wood glue. Had trouble with printing on such absorbent paper, hence lines in it. But gives overall look to unimog. Brush guard comming along, but very tricky mic of PE mesh from railway kit and evergren plastic. Hope once painted looks ok.

Well it looks great, all the little wrinkles in it too add a really great effect so much better than a smooth plastic piece might be.

Sorry about the late reply Bob, my computer died.

I can't really help with the camo pattern, there are a few photos in the Australian War Memorial photo database that may help you: www.awm.gov.au and search for General Grant Tanks.

For the colours see here:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/47208/thread/1052299263/1052359433/Australian+two-tone+camo+scheme+of+1943-question

As for mine, Medium Green, Dark Green, Gray ... all very confusing so I'm just going to paint mine green.

I want an A5, so I'll have to modify the backend a bit:

And to make it more interesting the cast armour fitted over the transmission:

This is a website dedicated to Aussie armour, has some reasonable data on the M3, not immediately apparent what their colours were though.

@Michael: Really nice, have the deepest respect for ''modifiers'' and ''updaters'' like you.

@Mick: Extremely cool camo and whoopingly shrewd ieda to just bubble print the camo.
Interested in the meaning of Unimog? Universal Motor Gerät (pronounced Ooniversaal Motor Gee-Rate), means multiuse engine appliance. Was once developed by an ancient german company called Boehringer in '51 (methinks) mostly for farming (hence the multiuse as it had lots of power outlets for different equipment). Bought by Mercedes in '57(againmethinks).
Keep up the good work!

Leo, Scott, thank you for the kind comments.

I've now finished the cast armour plate and put a light coat of paint on to check the surface finish for defects.

And fitted the suspension, the skids are off a Tasca M4 as the Academy kit didn't have the style I wanted.

That's the lower part of the hull pretty much done. Now for the upper part, where the real fun begins.

Finally an update from my end (however minor considering the time elapsed):

Bad pic, sorry, was really late yesterday.

The cigar box full of running gear stuff is only a third of all the parts needed. Whoever said german tnaks were complicated ?!!

Greetings, all!
