Colin;

IF you have any Dragon MagicTracks available... the Pz III/IV mid or later sets would be a good ticket for this - and they are good-looking, and IMHO actually very easy (if a little slow... ) to assemble and apply. The one thing you would need to check carefully would be the drive sprocket... some of these older Tamiya IV drive sprockets were wider then those Dragon tracks, so need a replacement (a Dragon sprocket set would be my choice).

I did this on the first-gen Tamiya FlaKPz IV-Wirbelwind kit - it came out very nicely. I did have some extra Dragon sprockets and MT track sets on hand...

There are Dragon MT sets around, and you may be able to score a set for rather less than you might get Friuls for, etc.

IF you go with any AM track link set, the sprockets will be an issue of concern - you will want to carefully check the fit and be prepared to need new sprockets for some or most AM track sets.

I have to go shopping for a suitable kit (going to see what I can find on the economy since the dollar is so strong against the yen right now), but think I'll have a go at this one.

Bob,
I'm running into that exact problem with the Flakpanzer IV I'm building for the "What the Flak?" campaign. I've got the Fruils, and I'm completely at a loss as to how I can modify the Tamiya drive sprockets to work with them.

I experimented with narrowing the teeth, but that doesn't look like it's going to get me there. The way the sprockets go together I don't even see a way to shave any off to make the whole thing narrower. Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want to use the Tamiya PV tracks--way too many ugly mold seams to contend with.

Have you thought of using Fruil sprockets? I know it is an extra expense, but it may preserve your sanity with trying to get the kit sprocket to fit.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I would like to participate in this campaign with this entry:

My goal is to replicate this paint job (from AK Interactive's 1945 German Colors).

Thanks, Paul. I actually discovered just after posting my question that Friul makes seperate sprockets, of which I had not previously been aware. The reason for my ignorance, I think, is based in the fact that NOBODY seems to carry them. The only outlet at which I could find them is super-hobby out of Poland, a company of which I had never heard, let alone done business with.

Anyway, got a set of the sprockets on the way so hopefully there's a happy ending in the near future.

Hi Mark,

I think that some of my fellow Braille scale modellers have used this company and found it ok. A lot of the cool after-market stuff is stocked by Eastern European companies and dealing with them more and more you find they are reliable and fast for the most part.

All the best,

Paul

Believe it or not, it's my first build based on a Pz IV chassis!

Got to do some hobby shopping today, and picked up DML's Hummel Smart Kit for this campaign. There must be some pretty bad reviews on this thing since it was not only marked down, but also included, of all things, a Tamiya motorcycle orderly set. Is there some connection between these companies I didn't know about?

Mark:

IF you picked up this kit for a bargain price and with an additional extra packet - a "lagniappe" down here in southern (cajunland) Louisiana - you got yourself a BARGAIN, plain and simple!

Have no doubts or fears about this GREAT Dragon Hummel kit - it's a stellar kit and well-considered in reviews - simply the BEST 1/35 Hummel going! Of course that is just the reviewer's stated opinions (and I am right with them, FWIW!), and one's own experiences will be the final answer!

It's a big complex kit with a lot of pieces, so you will certainly get your "modeling pleasure for your bucks" out of this one, and you'll need plenty of paint!

Build on, friend!

Bob

PS: That Tamiya inclusion is just lagniappe - the T and D are not associated, far as I know. There are big general differences between the kits produced by each of these plastic giants.

Bob,
Thanks for the feedback. It certainly looked like a fun kit when I cracked open the box--PE, metal barrel and fittings, and magic tracks. First time to do magic tracks, but they look nice, and I like indy link tracks except for the cleanup, so this is money!

Home stretch now, still need to attach the screens and do some more weathering. One glitch,I couldnt get one of the assembled MT track runs over the return rollers,so I had to paint it on the tank, not fun but I got it done. Thanks for checking in.

Hi All,

Here is my entry. Sd.Kfz. 164 Nashorn also known as 8.8cm PaK43/1 auf Geschutzwagen III und IV (Sf). An excellent tank destroyer with one of the best WW2 guns.

Model is from AFV. Since some reviews are around I will be short in description. It is perfect in quality and details level. No traces of flashes and any other defects. I will add Eduard's PE and probably metal tracks.
