So I should give the muffler a light coat of dark wash? After the matte clear?

Yes! Maybe darken the creases and ends a bit more. You can keep going with layers on it until you are happy with the look. Look at some rusty mufflers for reference never hurts...

Ok sounds good! Need this rain and humid weather to pass. Looks like I'll be deer hunting until then. :-)

So today I'm going to spray the matte clear and I have a question.

I have the Johnson's future, and I have Tamiya XF-86 flat clear and X-20a acrylic thinner.

Do I have the right flat clear? Do I need to thin with X-20a if I use the future also? At what ratio do these need mixed?

Please help.

either of those clear finishes would work actually...however, at the stage you are at, unless you are going to do more weathering like oil, pigments and or washes, the Future might leave a bit too much shine. I would shoot a test with a 50/50 mix on the Tammy....maybe bump it up to 75/25 clear to thinner. I have not used the brand in a while but the results are more than sufficient. With any luck, one of the guys who shoots that clear on a regular basis will chime in shortly for you!!

Off topic from the clear question (please feel free to chime in on that still) did these Pz. IV have much stowage on them? Like tarps, crates, troop equipment?

Just make sure you are using the clear flat NOT the flat base. The flat base is meant to be mixed with gloss paints to make them matt and if used alone will "frost" the finish.

I still need to weather the road wheels, idler and drive sprocket.

Just wanted to see it with the tracks on again.

Looking good so far. The muffler rust looks a bit pink in the photos, though that may be an artifact of the camera. The return rollers appear to be painted black on the rims rather than bare steel, and this version did not have rubber rimmed rollers. The teeth on the drive sprocket also should be bare steel, as should the edge of the idler wheel where it contacts the steel track. The spare links on the glacis plate should fit into four L-shaped brackets at the corners. These have holes in them, allowing an over-long track pin to be threaded through the brackets and the track links, holding them in place. There are photo etch parts available, but these brackets can be made from .010" styrene in a few minutes.

Thank you Armorsmith, I definitely don't want to mess up the good work I've done on this one.. Like the Tiger.

Gerald,

Thank you for that info, I do have the spare tracks that fit up front in the bracket, I just haven't painted them yet. The return rollers I painted black and will use a lead pencil on once I do the matte clear. And still have work to do on the drive sprocket and idler. And the muffler is a bit light, I will darken it up some once the matte clear is on also.

May I add, if it weren't for a handful I great people on here.. I wouldn't be building anything near this quality in my opinion. These fellas have been amazing help and full of knowledge. I couldn't have done it without their help.

While many have offered advice and help, the end result is ultimately your work. Again, I must commend you on your willingness to learn and to take the help and advice as it is truly meant, constructive criticism not simply criticism for its own sake.

It really depended on how long the vehicle was in service for. The more time on the field, the more there were objects. But at the end of the day it's really your choice if you want to add some stowage.

On an other note , something I find helps with the mud , is spraying a mud brown color extremely lightly on the bottom hull tub behind the wheels and from there apply some water and pigments(after paint is dry). This gives a pretty decent caked on mud effect.

Happy modeling

I sprayed a coat of flat clear, Tamiya XF-86, thinned 50/50. It definitely toned down the gloss, but perhaps it needs another coat once it's dry. Or maybe I should reevaluate my opinion once it's been on for 24hours. This is less than one hour, maybe it'll time down more and won't need another coat?

What did you thin the Tamiya flat with? I thin Tamiya paints with isopropyl alcohol and that makes it dry dead flat.

You may need another coat, but give it a little more time and see what happens.

To add to this, I did a fairly light dusting.. Because of my anxiety from the Tiger.

Nice. If it's only a light dusting you might consider another coat. If you are going to use pastels/pigments I would definitely give it another coat as pigments adhere much better to a matt surface.

When are we going to see the Tiger again?

Thank you! I shall give it another coat for sure.

The Tiger hull will get a coat of future probably tomorrow of sometime this week, because I still have to future the Pz. IV drive sprocket and idler so I can weather them.

Then once the Pz. IV is done, I'm going to finish up the Tiger.

Fair enough. Doing fine work on the PzVI. It's really coming together nicely.
