I suddenly got a burst of inspiration and creative plasma by looking at some old newsreels.
I decided a cart and horse was needed so.

Here is the horse body from the very antique Tamiya mounted wehrmacht set and the head from a Historex horse. The wheels are from a MB set that includes a wagon.

Melded the body and head together roughly and built the axle.

The cart will be halted, hence the horse I selected.
I made the main trail parts and rounded off the "horse ends"

Then framed them out for the floor

Added said floor

Made the sides

Made a crude seat and removable boards for the back

It took a while to distress all those plastic "boards" but not bad for a nights' work. Next up is filling it with the sad trappings of a family in flight and adding the harness.
What say yea ?

Wow! You got more done in a night than I get done in a month. The cart and horse are excellent. Really looking forward to seeing how you finish these out. I'm really curious to see how "healthy" your horse will look. I would think really strong and healthy horses would have been commandeered by the army; but I don't remember ever seeing anyone portray a tired, old nag. This just keeps getting better and better.

Please, be aware that the leadership in those days were very well aware about the food situation in Germany.
Therefore, quite some labour was working in the agricultural sector (even quite some former soldiers, suffering from "shell shock" or other phsychological wounds). To power the equipment, horses were elementary. Thus, well kept and sound horses were common. This animal has the luck to make it into the west (isn't it going to be a success story, Jerry!) instead of being eaten or moved to a Soviet Kolchoze.

Suprised to see that a 54 mm horse head fits so well to a 1/35 body!

Greg,Conor and John,
Thanks a bunch guys for the quick responses. Means a lot to me as always.
Conor, when I'm on a roll I go with it ! Took me a while to understand that but I get it now and so I crack on. I needed to take a bit of a painting break because it was getting a little too much like work ! LoL. Can't have that ! But I won't take that much of a break or I will have to re-learn painting again. It's a process, what can I say.
Greg,no folks will go in this cart, just the junk we humans consider important ,sometimes to our detriment.
John, the horse has only gone through basic reconfiguration so far. It will get some shape shifting and plastic bending now and will lose some weight, yes.
Paul,I think you will be happy with the end result of my newest equine adventure. I know how dear the horses are to you. I put his head in this position not because he is caparisoned but because he is enjoying a pit stop. Stay tuned folks(and yes,you lurkers as well)

Another nice touch Jerry. Most people seem to forget how common horses were back then, especially in Europe.

Since food was scarce at that time I dunno.
Dogs-yes-always around,our best friends
cats- no way you can heard cats
chickens-too quick to get in a pot along the way.
canaries-yes,maybe-on top of a cart or whatever.
But building a cage ? That would be something.

I found a good family group I ad in another MB set. I changed the lady around to be holding a bucket so the horse can get a drink.

Just a rough pose so far. No detail work. I also switched the horses head. I decided it looked too big.It is a resin copy I made of an old Italerei horse that I used in my Falaise dio.

Also have a cute kind and a nice hund.

Tied up to the farm cart I have a nice goat and an alte mann looking for his pipe.

The horse improved!
What I like is the fact that with this small scene in the scene you create a dot of relaxation! In all the hectic of fleeing officials and "withdrawing" military a woman and a child pay attention to an animal and seem to forget the onrolling violence from the east!
Splendid idea, you're not only good in painting and sculpting, but also have a sense for drama.
Thanks for sharing your work, enjoy the weekend! Curious what comes up next!

Wow Jerry...., this is like 17 dioramas in one..
The horse & cart are great, fair play to you for making the harness, cart, horses head etc from scratch, something many of us wouldnt be confident to take on & do justice to. The final piece is going to look exceptional, with so much detail & interaction....keep going!!

Thanks Paul,
I actually made the change with the horse because of you. I knew that many would not notice the scale problem but you did ! So off came the head.
Thanks for making such nice observations about the stuff here my friend,

Hi Jerry,

Registered Lurker # 9,999 signing in – agree with all comments to date, looking forward to seeing how you put it all together. Not wishing to be a horse’s ass but does it have a tail? Maybe it’s moulded round the back, or are you plotting a er scratch-built version with some kind of filaments perhaps?

Cheers, Tim
