John, post!

Every new post brings the topic into the Forums Latest Post field and increases the possibility for new enlisters for the Campaign.

And even if there is a new Active thread (honestly-I'm not a fan of this approach, because of confusion, lost history and double work for those, who already posted their intended builds in the "retired" thread), that will absorb the builds, Campaign starts in more than 3 weeks time.

We don't need to be silent in these 3 weeks

Good point Angel, I was sure I put down the 1st of Jan and not Feb lol, but not to worry. I will have to wait those 3 weeks now, lucky I didnt start cutting the spru's lol.
Will be doing a little bit of scratch on it and some of the PE but the actual detailing looks very good so far.

Gentlemen, would you let me in?
I've served with the same 5th Border Detachment as Angel Yovchev, but in 1986-1988 (during the communist era).
I intend to participate with a lighthouse station APM-90.

Svetoslav, of course, it will be our pleasure, and welcome. Its looks like an interesting build, never seen that before, so will be great eye opener. It says airport lighthouse station, but what was its actual role/purpose ? Im intrigued.

A couple of very very dodgy looking gentlemen lol.
Seriously,this is even better than I hoped, people who served in the same unit reliving some of those moments, with the wagons they served on. Excellent !!!

Well, I`ll try to translate from Russian wikipedia (my English is not very good)
It`s a projector, designed in USSR during the `50s for illuminating the airstrips during the night.
Some characteristics:
- diameter of the mirror - 900 mm;
- principle of light generation - electric arc burning of a coal rod;
There is an electric generator with 17 kW power.
- voltage - 80 V:
- amperage - 150 A;
- length of the light beam - 25-30 km
- luminous intensity - 135 000 000 candela.
It was based on ZiL-130 chassis.
On the border was used to illuminate the place of border violation.

Thanks for all that info, very interesting, and so was sort of repurposed from airfield work to border security. Impressed with the 25-30km beam range, definitely sunglasses needed for that !!
Did they operate as lone vehicles or part of a specific team with various others ?

Yes, they did.
A ZiL-130 truck, a driver and a projector operator. That`s all the stuff.

Well I'm having a hard time deciding what to build I was in the US Army and National Guard for 27 years and crewed 6 different tanks. I also guarded a border but it was the West German border in the 11th ACR. So I started driving M551A1s and finished as an M1 platoon Sargent with 2 models of M60A1, M60A3 and M48A5 in my resume. So The only kit I do not have is a vanilla M1. I have the AFV M60 series so I'm leaning toward an M60 of some kind. Cheers!

Welcome Tom, and always good have a heavy armour guy on for ride. I to was in W Germany maybe around your time -84 to 90, but ready to deploy to the defence line on the river Weser near Hamelin. I did a weeks exchange/visit in Fulda on some M1's, as we had a US squadron leader attached to us in the Blues & Royals for 18 months.
I will look forward to any heavy track you decide. As well as a CVRT I will also be doing a Challenger 1 I was on in Germany back then.

I was there a bit earlier, 1977 to 1979. On REFORGER 78 we saw quite a few Chieftains, Scorpions, Scimitars and M60A2s. Those 2 years were in Fulda.

We did a couple of Reforger exercises, always very intense but also rewarding knowing what was at stake. Only regret is lack of photos, in those days it was a real camera or nothing, whereas today everyone has the obligatory smart phone for instant pictures of everything.

In my days(1995-1996) a camera found in your belongings ment you become customer of CI guys.With some nice consequences, like: camera gone, fancy haircut, healthy diet for at least 15 days, passes revoked for the duration of service e.t.c.

While earler- when Svetoslav(1986-1988), and my father(1967-1969) served- it could further result in espionage charges and court martial...When a portable radio was found in his locker, my father was lucky enough to escape the last two.

Im surprised Angel, was that still in part because of the ex strict Sov influence or more because of your particular job with secure Comms. I didnt think it would of been so strict then ?

It was a rule strictly followed where I was stationed(Border Detachment HQ), while on the Border Outposts the atmosphere was more relaxed- probably to compensate for the hardships of everyday border service.

Thanks to that, one day I can modell a particular Border Outposts UAZ-469 all-terrain vehicle, that on a particular occasion in late August 1996 spared me the 2,5 hours climbing to reach the Outpost by giving me a lift

Finland didn't have that strict rules in 1992-93, but we weren't allowed to photograph equipment bought from Russia. Found out that 1-2 months before my service ended, when overheard an officer candidate being questioned by an officer. Got impression that worst that could happen in this case is losing the film.

I think that was an exercise where I was assigned to role of runner, but fell asleep when we were toured the exercise area (in an UAZ) and I had not idea where where the units were. Luckily I was given a radio and told to stay near the officer in charge of the exercise...

I get that Angel, HQ elements always tend to be stricter when theres classified comms around.
And anything that saves you a 2.5 walk up a very steep hill is definitely worth paying back by modelling it lol.

And I know what you mean Pasi, there is nothing worse than falling asleep on exercise at just the wrong moment ....... not that I ever did lol...

Clocks ticking down to the start, have ordered the tamiya Challenger 1 which will be my 2nd entry once I complete the CVRT, which reminds me, I need to order the replacement decals for it.

Its a GO !!!
Right, will post a new set of pics to confirm the date etc, and then clear some space on the work table then I will get a some basic plastic cut and start getting some prelim building done on the CVRT.

Hopefully Richard will pick this up and make it all official .....
