Well, I'm finally done with all the building and painting on my M3A1, and have started the weathering process. So it's time to start to get serious about what model I'm going to build for this campaign. Every time I've narrowed my choices down to just a few, the list just starts to grow again.

The Dragon M7 Priest is still the fronter runner, but the M51 Isherman is right behind, and closing up fast. Then the M4A3E8 is making a concerted run to take over the lead, and the rest of the field is still in run for the roses.

Hi all,
Jan & Scott: Thanks for the entusiasm my Quad are showing

Here's a minor update:

I use Valejo Desert Yellow as a basecoat. Next step is to give it a good wash with the good ole burnt sienna, and drybrush with Iraqi Sand. The muffler will get a decent paintjob as well.
Enverything seems to fit perfectly - though some nasty exess plastic (flash?) that has to be removed.

More to come

Another small update today and the build is much nearer completion. First a couple of pictures of the turret completion.

After that I turned my attention to finishing up some of the hull detail pieces. In some cases the mounting mechanisms (hole and slot) were fine and in others there was quite a discrepancy (on the small side) in their sizes that created minor problems. Note that the upper and lower hull are only dry fitted at this point.

The only thing left to do before painting is to shape PE screens that cover the muffler.

Cheers,
Jan

Sal;

Looking back in this thread which I just joined into... saw you had a problem with what looks like missing wire for pins in the kit PE tow-pads. I know this is WAY LATE in your build, but how about making pins from stretched sprue from the kit, seeing as the kit does not supply any brass or other wire from which to make them?

It seems to me that it would be "OOTB", in that the sprue came from the box. I'm thinking this could work for this case (and may be appropriate for some other kits - older Tamiya and Italeri things come to mind - which instruct one to make antenna or other similar rod-like bits from sprue instead of supplying an actual part). Isn't it OOTB if the instructions would call for making the specific identified part yourself from the kit's sprue, even if it is also somewhat "scratch-built"?

Is this legit for current interp of "OOTB"? (Making a specific part from kit material when directed to do so per instructions?).

Just an idea( ) and a question ( )!

G'day guys !

I'm in with a Pegasus Hobbies 1/48 E-Z Snapz Messerschmitt BF-109G6.

It'll be a quick easy build, but a good chance for me to try Luftwaffe Mottled Camo before some complex builds later.

Pics of the box in a few days

Cheers

Thanks Bob for the suggestion, I guess I could have used some stretched spruce, but i always screw that up and now that the build is complete I find that I have a thicker piece of wire in the box that could have been used
Oh here is what it is looking like now
Photobucket
the instruction diagram to string the rope was very vague and difficult to follow
Photobucket
and now the hook hangs lower than i wanted
Photobucket
next up is the individual link tracks that are not Magic Tracks and are held to the spruces at 3 points
Photobucket
Hopefully I can get the 1st 100links glued together tomorrow before work

Hey ya guys ,,been a little while since i last posted here ..been so damn busy with other things its been nuts ..but slowly things are sorting themselves out and then i can start on my DANA ,,

Sal i love how your Panzer IV ammo loader is coming along ..its starting to look very very nice ..oh maybe a little late now but heres a little help for you with that rope/string for another project .. i never use the string in the kits ..i use the string that is used to rig radio controlled yachts ..you can get it in different thicknesses and its smooth and looks alot like cables and it won't sag like the string will ..looks much better

One thing i am finding funny right now is how many kits are on this page that i've got ,,like Simons 25 pdr gun ..brought one this week and Audrey's Gaz truck..no idea what i'm gonna do with it but it was cheap and its a nice little kit .
The M35 of Wesley is another in my pile ,,got all three versions of that one ..nice kit and perfect for anything Vietnam based .

Jan i like your little beast so far ..thats gonna look pretty sweet once its finished

Guys,
Remember the rule: If it's not in the box, it's not allowed. I specifically asked about the case where the maker provides the ends of the tow cable but not the cable itself and tells you to use string (not included) for the tow cable.

Yep if it's not in the box you can't use it!

Jan. also looking good that looks like a nice little kit.

Paul, good to have you joining in for this one looking forward to your 109.

@Sal - Your beast is really coming along. I don't recall so what are those shells it carries for? (Dora?, Leopold?, Karl?) I have a 1/72 Karl 60 cm mortar and have seen that someone makes this vehicle in that scale. I abhor L & L tracks let alone that insanity that you are about to put yourself through. ;-)

@steph - The interior of the 251 is looking really well done.

****************************************************

Well, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Everything from the box is now on except the tracks that I won't put on until the vehicle is pretty much painted. It sure would be nice if more manufacturers provided a bending template or styrene form for the PE. The first screen worked out fine but the second took two tries.

Just as a diversion, I took a pictures of the Dragon Chi Ha beside the ancient Airfix offering that I made a couple of decades ago.

While the Dragon is 1/72 scale the Airfix is supposed to be 1/76. As one can see in the pictures, they are pretty darn close dimensionally. Also, considering its age the Airfix kit isn't too bad. Granted, there is a lot more and crisper detail on the newer version.

Now the real painting can begin. :-)

Hi All

Just want to say thanks for making it a university build. I mainly do figures and planes and its really easy without realizing it to become locked in that and not look anywhere else and you armor guys are the masters of weathering and there is lots to learn from you. One day I just have to build a tank.

For this build though I am going basic. Mainly because I am between jobs and not having much spare cash right now. Yesterday I picked up the Academy Fw-190 Dora. It was $10.00 and overall the detail isn't bad. The cockpit is surprisingly detailed for a kit of this size and price. There are not many steps to it and the instructions look pretty straight forward. If it builds fine this might be a excellent kit for any beginners out there or for someone working on a big project who wants to take a break and just finish something.

Everything will be out of the box. Only thing I will add AFTER the campaign is a Swastika on the tail as while a small number of Luft birds didn't have it, the 3 decal options in the box all should have had it and Academy do not include it. Irks me to no end and is the only thing about the kit so far that I don't like.

Here is the pic of my opened box

Would my build/review of the Dragon Type 2 Ka-Mi here https://armorama.kitmaker.net/review/6641 qualify for this campaign? I have completed photos ready to post.

Oh, lofty Lords of the Campaign, a wee bit of guidance for an OOTB naif, if you would, please!

Q1: I am thinking of building the Hobby Boss SdKfz 223 - Funk kit for this campaign.

This kit, like about all the other AC kits out there, features the wheels oriented straight front-to-rear. The steering links and rods underneath are molded accordingly. No alternative "turned" parts are provided.

I would much like to model the 4-wheel steering featured on these cars - I could do so by clipping out part of the tie-rods on one side and splice in a piece (maybe stretched sprue from the kit? ) on the opposing side to lengthen same, and do a little cutting and trimming and gluing of extant stub axle bits into slightly altered locations and angles. Alternatively, I could just bend or re-locate the stubs and not alter those tie-rods, but that would be pretty false, IMO.

Would this change fit into the rules for this OOTB campaign?

Q2: This kit comes complete with a motor - pretty nice in its way - but I am thinking of closing the access hatches and saving that motor for another build, as it just screams for some detailing.

Is it OK to leave off (out) what may be considered to be a substantial item in the box?

Nice to see an aircraft build for this campaign, as I'm a former WWII airraft modeler. I'm assuming that the Academy kit is 1/72 scale.

Hi all,
Almost finished with the wheels and the engine parts on my Quad. I'll post pictures soon.

And another thing: I really think the work that all you guys are showing and entusiasm in this campaign are really great.

Keep it up

@Joel Yep its a 1/72. I really wanted to do a 1/48 but this guy was cheap and not bad. I have dreams of the Tamiya 1/32 Zero, Spitfires and new P-51. I did have a 1/48 Oscar which I would have done for this build from Finemolds but I started it already the other week and that would be cheating.
