Some in-progress pics

I'm trying to stick to the kit OOB but I had to put some form of exhaust pipe coming off the engine. I'm thinking now I want to display the engine compartment open because the kit has a respectable looking engine and I think that was kind of a rare thing for a kit that old.

Thanks, Hellbent

This update sees work on the base.

I used styrofoam as a base to elevate the farmyard higher than the road. For some reason my dioramas tend to look flatter than planned. This one is no different. I had planned to have the house ruin sitting a bit higher than this.

Added the Miniart Farmhouse and the scratched well.

Added the Celluclay and added wheel marks and track impressions on the road sections. Not show in this update, but I added sections of stryrene as stones for the footpath to the house. These were leftover sections that I had cut for the scratchbuilt well.

And a view from inside the ruins. I added some floor joists and plan on putting down a few floorboards..as well as some other house bits.

She's been primed and is actually sitting outside drying at the moment.

More progress on the base.

The land was really flat, a problem I have with my bases. Since the 251 wasn't sitting right I decided to break out the Celluclay and build up the roadside a bit.

Add the initial layer of groundwork. I used leaves grind up in an old coffee bean grinder. I'm going for a leaf covered patch of ground.

I added vines growing up the ruins. I made these by drawing out lines with glue and sprinkling Woodland Scenics fine ground turf. Turf pieces that fell landed in glue on the ground so it looks like the ivy is growing up and out.

Time to make some trees. The trunks and branches are made from floral wire. The thick trunk ones were covered with a layer of tissue paper and glue. Ther foliage are Woodland Scenics sponge. The other trees are wire buts are covered with a couple of coats of glue. I added ground up leaves followed by turf.

Scattered some turf to flesh out the groundwork. Placed the trees and ran ivy to the well.

I added remnants of a floor to the inside of the ruined farmhouse. I used strips of wood as wooden flooring. I added some leaves and will stain in later.

Added some shrubbery to try to define the base's borders a bit better.

I "figure" it's time to introduce the figures. The horses were taken from Dragon's old Florian Geyer set. These guys are on patrol (partisans/resistance fighters) passing by the gun's crew as they freshen and settle down for the evening.

The gun crew is a combination of some of the figures from Miniart's Germans Soldier At Rest Set. I left out the officer sitting in the chair reading a book...I have got plans for him for another project. I also used two figures from Dragon's German Warriors set. The idea is that the gun crew stopped at the ruined farmhouse to make camp for the night. They are getting cleaned up, shaving, making a bit of stew. The 251 kit comes with unworn fieldblouses which works in well with these soldiers.

I avoided using a covered well. I figured the support poles and roof would be falling apart at an abandoned farm. I decided to use a wooden cover. I made it using scrap styrene. By the way, I usually stick a penny in the groundwork of my bases as a good luck thing. I placed the penny in the well on this one. It seemed appropriate.

And that's where I am now.I'll probably start pushing through the figures and horses. I'll probably tweak the groundwork and foliage as I go. I'm probably going to make a campfire and have them making a stew as well as grill a rabbit.

Hi Alex,

I'm following your progress of work. I like how you have managed the base, the house and the trees. Very good job.
Go ahead !

Nice work.

I've managed to make some progress. I decided to add another tree, this time a bit larger. I was wanting to fill in the backdrop to the left of the house ruin. I made the trunk from a length of sprue, added floral wire branches, and then coated the trunk and larger branches with white glue and tissue paper.
I painted the trunk a dark gray. I added the first round of foliage using ground up leaves. I then added bits of coarse turf to try to fill out the branches a bit.

Basically done tree. I oversprayed it heavily with clear coat to try to seal the foliage. It's still a bit thin and I'll add more clumps of woodland scenics material to try to flesh it out a bit. As is, it's too hard to add a lot of branches without knocking bits off. I painted the trunk and branches a mix of German uniform gray and a brown. I'm not happy with the lack of truck/bark texture.

I added remains of a roof with shingles and some rudimentary support. I know they look green and probably will be repainted. I'll probably add some other remains of the interior as I go....like rafter supports. I'm not sure how well it shows but there's actually broken glass in the upper floor window.

Just a general shot of the groundwork with the trees placed. One of the issues with the Miniart ruin s the size of the door. I added a section to the threshold to make the doorway a bit smaller. It isn't painted at the moment because I might add another section. Also, I added a wagon wheel and added turf to look like it had been overgrown with ivy.

On to the figures. I wanted the gun crew to be setting up camp. And for camp you have to have a camp fire for s'mores and to tell ghost stories. I figures the crouching cooking guy would work well for cooking their meal. I used leftover bricks from the well for the fire pit. I snagged a frying pan from the spares (Tamiya I think). Needed some vittles so I grabbed two Tamiya rabbits. I hacked off their heads and paws and fitted them to look like they are on spits. I made the frames from stretched sprue. I've got some foodstuffs put aside to round out their meal. The two half circles is the revamped well cover. I decided to go with a two-piece design so I can leave one on and use as a table.

Shaving guy is shaving. I used the wrapper from a Three Musketeers bar to replicate the reflective surface of the mirror.

The horse riders. There's still a bit of work needed...like that very visible seam on the one horse's rear. I'm prett yhappy with how the camo smocks came out. I might change out the heads.

And the rest of the figures. gain, still a bit of work to do.

And that's where it stands right now. Things are coming together. I have a few other figures I might add if I think the scene needs it. I don't think it'll be needed though. I might add the window to the ground floor window...and add broken glass. Of course I have to finish the Hanomag and add the equipment.

I drybrushed the 251. I wanted this to be an older C that had been pressed in to service as a tow vehicle after Kursk...sent to France to rest and refit. So I drybrushed it gray to hint that it had been overpainted dark yellow. Drybrushed over this a layer of dark tan to represent road dirt.

Shaving guy's shaving spot is done...almost. I added basin from the spares. I filled it with white glue. When dried, it appears as soapy tinted water. I'll probably add a towel of some sort.

The Tamiya 7.5cm pak was drybrushed the same as the 251.

I decided on a change. The tape represents a revises roadside. It'll narrow the road but allow me to add a tree or two to the enlarged roadside. I'm hoping this change will add depth to the scene and make it look immersed and integrated as opposed to figures and vehicles sitting on top. I actually think that the road is really too wide for what is supposed to be a back-country dirt road.
I've already removed the small road piece and cut out a larger one. Its clamped to the base now, drying. I'll add the celluclay tonight. I've got a tree under construction now.

More progress.

I decided to rework the front roadside section to raise its height and enlarge its size...as well as narrowing the road. I built it up using sheet styrofoam and covered it with Celluclay. I added a few Celluclay bumps to the center of the road to give the impression it is rutted.

I wanted to have the impression that the road goes through the trees and the best way to that was to have taller trees on the sides, hanging over the road. So I broke out the floral wire. I tried something different for the trunks and larger limbs. Instead of tissue and white glue I used Celluclay left over from the revised groundwork. I thinned it with water and spread it on the wire. I think it looks pretty good.

Base changes painted and trees added and rearranged.

With the groundwork basically done, It's time to start adding the figures and such. Most of this came from the spares. I dropped the rabbits on the spits because they really didn't turn out well. I scratched a cooking pot and lid from a bucket from Italeri's old Maintenance Set. Added handles and painted it silver to look like it wasn't issue. Food, bottles, bread, and sausages went in to ammo crate. The inset picture is the beginning of a campfire. The wood is made from stretched/twisted sprue. I cemented on smaller pieces to look like branches.

Now it's just a matter of adding everything to the base. I'm actually done. I plan on taking some pictures tomorrow if the sun is out. And with that this one is basically done.

I'm calling this one done. So here's some pictures. I'll upload a few in to the gallery in a bit. I'm pretty happy how this one turned out. It's not perfect but it was enjoyable to build. Once the new wears off, I'll probably repurpose this base in to a photo base to take pictures on.

Thanks for the campaign...had a great build.

Sorry for the multiple posts, my pc is giving me a hard time loading pics! The interior is done for the most part and I'm starting on washes now. I'm going for a well worn vehicle that has been relegated to rear area duty for supply and mail runs.

This is my first attempt using vallejo for the whole model. I'm hoping filters and washes will tone it down and bring the chipping into balance.

I've been trying to build the kit oob but I couldn't resist adding an exterior rack for the fuel and water cans. I sanded them down quite a bit but as you can still see they are a bit chunky. The rack is a bit rough looking as I was trying to make it look like a field mod.

Thanks, Hellbent

I was away from here for a while. Just saw the topic.

I love these vehicles.. Is it too late to join this campaign? I have an 251 ready for painting.. If it is ok, I can continue from here..

Welcome Sancar,
how far along is your kit, usual rule in most campaigns is that all models be less than 30% built at start.
