Dear All
After discussing all the afternoon with bill aka Boggie, it seems that it is a good date to start a blog for all the users of slat PE kit.

We would like our opinion on the different PE kits around the markets. If you did already the build, please fell free to post our opinion about if (fair and constructive).

Was it user friendly PE kit ??
What about the accuracy ??
Was it a good investment ?

This is not my blog threads, this is a community blog, to help people depending on their skills to choose the perfect PE slat kit.

Many guys are allready involves into this specific area like Mirolsav, Burik, Pete, Gino etc...
I hope that Frenchy will provide us with nice pics.

Please use this blog

thanks for your help

Well here’s what I know and can say. The pics below are references that I found on the net (1) while the other was given to me with the dimensions.

Was it user friendly PE…yes and no. First when you remove the pieces they have to be filed, not an easy task. There are small burs sort of like when you take a plastic part from a tree. If you don’t file it you won’t get it to sit flush which is important or you’ll run the risk of not being square. When I first started filing the pieces would bend very easy. Then I held the end parts in a pair of tweezers and switched to a med. sanding stick.

Once the support bars and frames were bent there was a void, it was hollow. At first gluing them was impossible. There just wasn’t enough strength. I found that inserting/gluing a strip of .040 X .040 Evergreen Plastic made things easier and more mass for the glue.

The instruction were easy to read and follow, no confusing steps.

As for the PE it’s self, well it was thin. You need to take your time and handle with care as it bent everyway Sunday, even breathing heavy bent the PE.

What about the accuracy…I’ve never seen a Stryker in person so I can’t say anything about it’s accuracy of the PE compared to the real slat armor. But compared to the dimensions I have with the PE it’s almost right on. The support bars and frames are scaled 2 inches while the slats are 3 inches. again 1/1 dimensions are above. As for the distance between the slat armor and the Stryker sides, I really can’t say, but it look pretty close.

Was it a good investment…it is really pricey, mine was $55 dollars. I’m sure you can find it cheaper while other places will coat more. You got to look at it as one of those “must have PE sets”. I’d like to see the cost come down, $40 dollars seems to be a fair price. Investment, well if you want an accurate looking OIF Stryker or a contest entering Stryker you’ll need this set.

Check this out…AFV Stryker #34.99 + Eduard slat armor PE $54.99 + Legends/ Real Model resin $50 = $140 dollars, that’s not including the resin figures…Helo Miniatures 2 sets $ 46.40 and Legends 2 sets $55.00 equaling $241.40. Now that’s what I have tied up in one Stryker.

This could even get more costly, add in the mounting rack set $22.95, blast armor set $24.95, exhaust deflector $6.95, storage belts $19.95 and the detail set that contains the struct guards and other pieces $22.95...total $97.75. Now added to the first cost, $339.15...so yeah it's pricey. Yes some of the sets contain the same parts, mostly the storage racks.

Again this is my observation, most of the info came from the internet of the few here who has hands on experience, manuals and books.

Good idea, but might want to wait until all the sets are out? Thinking Pro-Art and Voyager (or was it Lion-Roar?) And there's that other one that just came out, but just can't think of their name right now - a newish company.
I guess all the Eduard builders could start though...keeners!

Joe,
I think that you must compare all slat 1/35 with real slat. You build first slat for Trumpeter kit which is very different from slat for AFV.
What you find which slat is accuracy. You compare dimension which don`t look, many modeler prefer if model or PE is according to real vehicle. If all parts is in correct place, if some parts missing or no.
I agree with you, that Slat armor or OIF Stryker is big investment. This is problem all modelers. "Buy or don`t buy"
Miloslav

PS please Inch dimension is very problematic for many European modeler.

Hi Seb
I'd be happy to help, but I must say that the Stryker is not really one of my favourite AFVs so I have not gathered as many pics as for other US vehicles like the M113 or the AAV. However that may be, I will gladly send some to anyone needing them. Most of them (=about 60 pics) are hi-res OIF pics (sorry no details close-ups)...

Eduard
http://www.eduard.cz/ and search for Stryker. I counted 13 sets for both Trumpeter and AFV both 1/72 and 1/35 scales. A note here that Eduard allows the modeler to upgrade specific elements of their model without spending money on the whole enchilada.

Anyone not currently employed by the US military in Iraq might need to pick up some of the growing number of reference books available from on line model shops and at your local hobby stores.
http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com
is an amazing resource for new releases and reviews on most of the current modeling offerings, I list here a few books you might want to pick up.

I have started building the Edward PE slat I have about 1 complete side done
it has taken about 4 months (intermitatly) to get that far
I will be honest I would rather pay 50 or so dollars for a reasonablly good plastic slat armor kit. I feel it could be done in sections If Dragon and such companys can mold some of those intricate stowage baskets than they certainly could mold sections of the slat
I have done many kits with PE including some heavey detailed ships and this PE slat sucks big time far too much work takes all the flippin fun out of building give me a plastic kit even if it is not the most accurate thing on the market
My 2 cents

For anyone that has missed the previous and sometimes epic build efforts in the quest for slat amor here is a (short) list of links to Armorama members.

I can hear some members ready to climb down my throat so I'll say it for you. On the top right corner of this page there is a little white box, type in what you want to find like "Stryker Slat" and click the search button. You will be rewarded with endless threads, reviews, pictures and references to the real thing. You can give a man a fish to feed him once, you can teach the man to fish and feed himself for the rest of his life. Just don't tell that to a Newfoundlander!

Do you ever sleep? Now a PE Rhino would be very cool and it could cross over to the HMMWV's as well. Please feel free to post other products that directly relate to the Styker here on the blog. It will be a great reource, one stop shop, for anyone building the Strykers.
I'm wondering what you meant when you said there was more Canadian slat coming our way????

Wow Bill, thanks for posting all those pics, this should make a real good blog for everyone building the stryker, I see you've been bitten by the bug then!

To add what you have said already about publications: Military Modeling issue Vol.37 No.8 2007 features an article by Robert Burik on the basic stryker with some nice NTC pics. While Vol.37 No.9 has a follow up by Paul Bird, which covers slat armor and a few interior pics.

Tamiya Model Magazine International issue 147 has a feature by Ralph Zwilling, which covers basic upgrades(excluding slat armor) and shows some nice pics of M1126's state side equipped with MILES gear for training. Some beautiful detail shots included.

Issue 8 of Model Military International also featured an article by Ralph Zwilling on the basic M1126 and some in Iraq fitted with slat-more useful ref pics.

Not sure how easy these mags are to get in the USA or elsewhere, but those ive listed are worth getting hold of-all are very useful!

In terms of the model, ive got everything I need now except the slat armor and stand-off armor, Im holding out on either the Griffon set or Pro art. The Griffon set looks like one of the best so far, and includes the headlight extensions which are very useful. I like the idea with Pro art of using resin for the support struts, the idea of folding these up from etch isnt exactly very pleasing for me.

I have both Voyager sets ordered..the slat armor is en route from the Far East, but Voyager seems not to have released the spaced armor that goes along with it!
