Gettin on well now. Did the fading which scared the stuff outta me, but worked ok - although it's very subtle.
I was scared to drill out the exhausts too much, but I suppose it still helps

Future & watercolour mixed (hadn't done the tip lights at this stage)

Think I've overdone the oil wash!! Might go back and clean it up a wee bit. Some touching up needed as well.

That's not where the wheel is going! Flattened tyre.

Well... that was a bunch of new techniques for me. Happy enough so far!

Agreed, Pete. You've got a great build going on there...very convincing results, especially considering all the new techniques you used. Looking forward to the finished project!

It was all going so well............. I was misting on Future/Klear, and almost done, when the AB decided to hawk a great globule right at the side of the fuselage... I paniced, and tried to wipe it away, lightly, with some tissue and alcohol. It looks awful. I'm gonna have to repaint that side. Don't know how it's going to look.

Pete: what a bummer. Maybe you can control the paint re-work and make it look like battle damage repair.

I was tearing (what's left of) my hair out earlier! I tell you what... it was close to getting some real battle damage! I did get the paint job fixed pretty well, but the future wasn't ABing on smooth enough, and I was wary of too wet a coat. (Had already misted multiple coats with not much sucess). I took a brush to it and there's places where it's too thick - to the point of losing the crispness of the details. I've just had a rubbing session with a nail buffer and a coffee filter, and it's a bit better. Just paranoid that the lovely markings don't settle down well enough. I think my wife thinks Iv'e lost it... in the past few weeks she's seen me hairdrying an aeroplane, buying a nail buffer, spending endless hours in the garage, and coming home to find me stirring cat litter into a bowl with white glue!!
Anyway, lets see how it goes tomorrow.

Pete, sometimes you can buff down Future mishaps with some #12000 grit sanding pads. It's smooth enough to rub out the Future problem area without damaging the paint underneath. Once it is buffed down you can just reapply a thin coat over the repaired area. Also, if you are having problems with how the Future is laying down with your airbrush, try thinning it with some Denatured Alcohol or Distilled Water. Test it out on a scrap model and see if you get a better consistency with the airbrush. Should airbrush on very smoothly in even applications. Certainly not THE way....just A way. I hope you can save her because it was a great looking model thus far.

Regards, Ian

Jeff - thanks man. The barbed wire I did following Tamiya's directions of tying three strands of (car stereo) wire together at intervals, then cutting one of the wires to create the poking tips.

Pete - everytime my wife catches me playing with models she knows I'm crazy. But, hasn't caught me in the kitty litter yet lol

Thanks Ian, yeah - the nail buffer feels similar to my micro mesh 12000 pad, but it's a better shape in this case. Where I have it buffed, it feels really smooth, but not quite glossy - will it need more Future, or is smooth enough to prevent silvering? I'll try buffing a scrap and misting a coat on to see if it glosses up nicely. The problem I had before was that the several light coats on top of the flat acrylics still wasn't looking glossy enough. When it's buffed, you can see there is still high & low spots. I did a wing with a brush, and didn't apply too much - it seems quite good. Just too much by brush on the fuselage. Another lesson learned!

Pete: Good Luck!!

My barrel came in last week. It is slightly different than the kit, but I think it will work great. Hopefully this week I can get some extra bench time and get it installed.

OK.. it's moving on now. I didn't bother with more future - the buffer seems to have made it really smooth & shiny enough. Major decals on the port side done & Micro Sol applied (before I spilled half the bottle).

I know this is way off topic, but look what I resurrected from the attic! My mum bought me this getting on for 40 years ago - I nearly completed it then, and it's not bad considering I was only about 14 at the time, but it needs a lot of TLC. I wonder which forum I should post this on? I could do with a mentor to help me get it finished.
Cheers,
Pete

Pete: nice work on the Mustang. For the bike, you might try Auto Modeler on the Kitmaker network. Might be someone there to help you.

Nico: looking great! Can't wait to see some paint on it.

Sil: very nice work. I love the layers of weathering. It looks like it went all the way from Moscow to Berlin.

OK, a little too quite here the last few days. Since my arms can now move again after crossfit, I decided to get cracking on this M10 Ersatz Panther conversion. The panzer brigade 150 used them during the Battle of the Bulge.
