Hi Dan. I just clicked the button to follow your progress. I get hooked the moment I find someone building a Chally.
Just a quick question that just came to my mind: is the gun the same as in the final versions of the Chieftains?
Keep us posted please.

Cheers Chaps, I've been at this one for a while and its turning into an enjoyable build. As far as the main gun I believe that it's the same as the MK11 possibly the MK10 but others who have crewed the Chieftains will be best to answer.

Very nice. Are those cast bits on the front fenders or styrene?

Any idea what the cutouts on either side of drivers hatch are for?

Thanks Chaps,

The corrected front armour is just plastic card, glued and sanded to the correct shape.

So I'm just going to scratch the commanders ammo box for the GPMG, the kit part is a little basic for my liking.

Kit part

Going to use the Plus Model PE ammo boxes and solder them up, need to do this first so I can size the whole assembly.

PE

First ammo box done, 2 more to do.

Enjoy folks

Hi Dan. Thanks for your answer. While looking at the pictures I thougth how much it looked like the art box for Takom's future release and remebered reading something years ago.
Precisely it was the gun that gave me a headache when I built mine almost twenty years ago while trying to remove the seam after joining the two parts.
I think I'll have a look at current prices. I might revisit it.
I keep on watching

Awesome work Dan. Do like the old chally 1.I studied one at Bovington end of July and took some detail shots.Would be nice if a model company done a real good chally one soon.
Watching with interest.

Very nice, have the same project for the future.

Any particular areas that need more attention?

I am interested in the resin turret bustle rack that you used. Is it available anywhere?

Thank you for shering your work

Nice job on a somewhat tough kit. Wish i'd had access to those nice Castoff bits when i did mine. I took this a few years ago when i was not building much and not participating in forums, so it's a lousy photo. I also like what you're doing with the TOGS box. I didn't have enough reference material so i left the door shut on mine.

Very impressive build. I have the same kit on my work bench.
Two questions:
What reference material are you using?
The external fuel tank holders - are they scratch built or an after market kit?
Will follow your progress with interest.

Not sure if you're aware but the lens of the TOGS camera is a very deep, dark red, not clear

Thanks for all the comments, I'll try and answer the questions but not in order.

Rear fuel brackets are scratch built, the kit parts are so simple and not the correct shape. Only used so far about 8 PE parts from the Eduard PE set, more to be fitted later, TISH lens will be painted a high gloss black once all the other bits are done, I used an MV lens as it was the correct shape for the unit.

The rear bin is from Castoff resin, it's part of the Challenger 1 update set that they produce, not a bad bit of kit, but it's all I used from the set.

As for ref material, I have a couple of the Kagerro books, and I have a few books on the chieftain, the MK 11 used the same TOGs unit as the chally 1, one of my previous builds was the Tamiya Chieftain MK11 with the Accurate Armour conversion.

Regards

Dan

Work started on the ammo box holder.

Fiddly as the bits are so small.

Need to let this part dry completely before add the rest.

Almost done with the box, still drying at the moment and requires further cleaning up.
A few bolts and some clips need to be added for the canvas cover and rollers.

Enjoy folks

Thanks Buddy,

So the ammo box holder is almost finished, and the other boxes are soldered up now.

The third open box will be filled with link that will be going to the GPMG, it need a bit more work to fit in the holder.

Cheers

Thanks Paul.

A bit more work done, added the weld seams that are on the box holder and the press studs for the canvas cover.
Welds were taken from the free sample from Archer, they are printed resin and the beads will be seen under a coat of paint.

Commanders cupola altered to fit the new box holder.

Enjoy

And fitted, Commanders cupola GPMG power lead and searchlight lead added.

Enjoy
