I really like the Hobby Boss kits. There's minor issues with them but no worse then any other Sherman kit out there. There's tons of aftermarket goodies if you want them, including Tank Workshop. An aftermarket barrel is really needed if you do a 76 mm version - Quarter-kit/Gasoline sells one for $3 or RB model, Lionmark, etc . Very nice details and you can mix parts with Tamiya kits too.

After being out of the loop since July I'm happy to report back to the front lines. You all may remember I did Tamiya's 1/48 M10 Wolverine for the last 48 group build. I did the 1/48 Tilly for the Not Fighting Vehicle campaign.
So what better way to get back into the groove than another 1/48 campaign? Well aside from the campaigns I still have time to finish that is!
I'm thinking maybe AFV Club's Tiger I Early or something along that line. Guess I have some time to think.

Hi Matt, glad to see you here at the reunion. A Tiger is always a nice choice.
I got curious and looked at the 1st 48th scale campaign and there were 81 people enlisted. Right now we're at 30. Time to do some more recruiting. I really liked the write up done at the finish last time. Here it is

Greg
Still six weeks before the start. I'm sure we will get more. Additionally we had 28 out of 81 finish. We will be more than fairly represented I believe.

Greg, I am going to go with another build of the HobbyBoss Korean War M4A3E8 and was wondering if you have any input on the hull or turret pieces from these kits? It seems that I should look into replacing the upper hull with a resin one, and I had a devil of a time getting the upper/lower turret halves and the mantlet to fit properly.

Nico welcome!
Matt you're right!
Jeremy - the E8 is the most accurate of the HB Sherman kits. I would replace the barrel with the RB Model one as being most important. Tank Workshop makes resin bogies as the kit's are 1.5 mm too tall if that bothers you. The manlet could be another area you could change using styrene strip and putty (see Konrad's article on Track48) - it's not hard but just a lot of sanding when I used a too wide of strip. See the detailed pmms review here (scroll down)

You're right, that's not bad at all. For some reason I thought there were major issues with the angle and size of the crew hatches on the upper hull, but it seems to be just a minor adjustment of level is needed.
I have the barrel, as well as the standard PE and the fender PE, resin replacement tracks, and Archer foundry markings. Bogies can easily be sanded down if needed.
What putty do you normally use when working on something like the mantlet issue? Normally I use milliput, but you may have a better solution.
I'm excited about this because I know what fit issues to be prepared for which means I can actually have some fun with this one

Jeremy - I use magic sculpt - TAP Plastics is right down the street from me and sells the stuff. I use Squadron putty too but it flakes apart pretty easy I think. It's the M4 (can just use the Tamiya kit instead) and the M4A1 kits with the most problems to fix. The M4A1 isn't that major (in my mind) and there is a resin hull out there from Tank Workshop.
James - Hobby Boss has always been my favorite from the start anyways - the price just makes them that more sweeter.

I have seen that some guys have posted what they are going to build. I am still trying to figure it out, I think I have narrowed it down to one of three possibilities, either my Monogram P-61 w/ edwaurd photoetch, Accurate Minitures B-25 C/D or AFV Sturmtiger. What about the rest of you, any ideas what you will be building?

I just read a nice little article in MMiR 54 with the Tamiya 1/48 Sd Kfz 251/1 and the Gaso.line 7.5cm PaK 40 conversion. I think that may be the way I go. Always wanted to build a halftrack, and now I has me my reason!
Here's the conversion:

I am going to build the Tamiya Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb, I have only built a few models so I was trying to pick something that wont be to difficult. It will be the first time I try painting camo.
I have a question that hopefully someone will be ale to help me out with. I was looking at the colours for the Camo and I wanted to do a desert camo scheme, does it matter that the decal letters that came with the model may not refect a plane that was actully painted in a desert camo scheme.
Maybe i am being way to anal, but was interested in knowing.
The decal sheet that came with the model has the following letters that can be used,AGM,SN,SZ,X,M.

@Gary - I did a google search to get an idea what the letters and camo would look like, and if it's close enough in color (close enough to satisfy you) that's all that matters. No one is going to hit 100% accuracy in modelling, but you can get as 'anal' as you need to just as long as you're happy with the balance between your time, money, and the process/ finished product. Bottom line keep it fun!
Sometimes you can go to a buy/sell forum and ask for the decals and maybe someone will send you an extra pair or e-bay.

@Greg- I guess I was just making sure that it was more about having fun than being historically correct. Not that it cant be fun getting it historically correct.
For me its just about learning the basics to start with.
Thanks for putting my mind at ease
